Mine does this sometimes, especially in the evenings and it may well be worse because I'm using the US store. I haven't tried the following but it might work better - renting the film in itunes and then sending it to the apple tv via airplay when you watch.

Seems a little convoluted but now we're a 2 apple TV household this should allow us to move rentals from one room to another. Shall be trying it myself pretty soon.

Yeah i'm renting from USA store as well but cant see that making a difference.

I think thats what i'll do in teh future just rent off iTunes and airplay.

Your D/L speed is way to slow for you to be able to use Apple TV, even for SD streaming.

I rented that movie just the other day in HD.

I have a 7 Mb/s connection and the movie started in less than a minute.

I also use Google DNS and Apple TV over wifi.

But how come i can download huge amounts on iTunes with no problems?

For example i downloaded a whole season of Ice Road Truckers Deadliest Roads which was 10 episodes coming in at 6gb and took around 6 hours.

I download alot of stuff on itunes sometimes multiple TV Series and Movies at a time and this 1 movie on Apple TV is taking the piss, i've never waited this long. Nearly 45 hours so far.

Also in reports i've read people with over 10mbps connections are having problems.

Not sure if this is your problem but I wish I had a dollar for every time I tried to download a large file, was extremely slow, killed the download, restarted it and it was much faster. Sometimes you get stuck in the slow lane and the only way to fix it is to reestablish a connection and hope for a faster lane.

I've always had a great experience renting from iTunes so I don't know what happens when you reset the ATV in mid-buffer. Do you lose the rental or does it just start over?

Yeah i've read about resetting the ATV but worried i will lose my download, there is a section in settings that says "check for Rentals" so maybe that's what its for.

I've just downloaded a HDTV show on my Macbook ( Dog The Bounty Hunter 750mb ) in 55mins. ATV is still crawling along with 5 hours left apparently.

I understand about not wanting to lose the rental. The fact that another download instance is faster may even prove my point. Each instance you start a download is unique. If you restarted your ATV download, it could possibly be much faster than the current one you've left in the "slow lane" all this time. Your ATV movie is spinning its wheels in the ditch while other cars are speeding by.... maybe someone else can confirm that it will start over. Other people have had success restarting and haven't complained about paying twice.

I always had that problem but i fixed it with buying airport extreme for every part of the house and the wifi was super speed.

Or try disconnecting all the stuff that are connecting to this wifi and your apple tv will get huge amount in the wifi

long load times for rental movies on apple tv

I am surprised at the comments here! Apple TV has a serious flaw, and the company is not addressing it. They have had months to address it. I can load movies on my ipad, imac or through netflix on the wii - no problem, pretty much instant. But it it takes over 10 hours for the apple tv. And , if you wait, sometimes it never loads.

I cannot believe apple has not addressed this problem. It is real, and it gives them a black eye. I know people that have switched from verizon service to cox, and fixed the problem. I might switch, if apple acknowleged that was the issue. As it stands, I think apple tv is useless, and tell people so.

Question: Who do we complain to? I thought Apple was supposed to be different!

If you can't get the ATV to work on your network and you aren't willing to upgrade your network (cable internet seems to work better and maybe change how the ATV accesses your network), sell it and try something else. It works for most people or there would be a huge outcry in the news, not just a few people on these forums. I looked at Verizon internet plans. The bottom two plans are totally inadequate for streaming HD movies from iTunes. The next highest plan is marginal if you actually have 4-7 Mbps at streaming time and the highest speed plan 10-15 Mbps would probably work well, assuming everything else on your network was good.

Another note: when you get a high time estimate on a rental and you know you have more than 4mbps download service at that time, back out of the Movies section, go back in and start the rental over again. On New Year's eve I was worried traffic would be high so I rented 3 HD movies early in the day. They all said they were ready to watch in a few seconds. That night when I went to watch them, the first one said it would be ready in an hour and fourty minutes. I backed out of Movies, went right back in, started the rental again and it was available in a few seconds. Many people don't understand that a time estimate isn't carved in stone. It's an estimate based on the download speed at that moment in time. Restart the download and it can be totally different.
