I’ve got the 2020 Pro 11” with the 12Z Bionic. Didn’t really care about Stage Manager, but now that I get it, I wonder if there’s a reason to upgrade.

I guess the new Pro will have fancy features, maybe. But if the introduction is just a press release, it makes me think there won’t be a big difference. I guess M1 to M2?

Also, it kind of bums me out if it’s just a press release because of the base iPad. Need to upgrade my mom from the 5th Gen. They say it’ll be a brand new design. Isn’t that alone substantial enough for an event?

It still doesn’t get external display support, but it also feels like a fairly niche power user feature that may not appeal to everyone.

I guess my 2018 iPad Pro lives on to fight another year.

Absolutely. The 2018 sounds like it’s getting its due.

I just wonder… the base model is the best selling iPad for years. It there’s the big change people are expecting, I would think there would be an event. I’d hate to not know exactly when to order. I suppose it’ll be on this site on the front page, till it falls off.

Honestly all I cared for was external display support. It's still better than nothing but really not much in my opinion, especially as resizing does not seem very flexible.
I have a M1 12.9 so I'll have the full experience, but I also have a 4GB 2018 12.9 (which even without stage manager reloads like crazy, and stage manager should only make things worse) and a 6GB 2018 11in, which should handle stage manager better, but with such a small screen I don't even see the point, I barely do split screen there.
Again better than nothing but very far from game changing like external display could be.

Never saw much point to Stage Manager for my usage. I’m more curious if display scaling is now available on older iPad Pros.

The 4GB RAM already felt quite constraining with just split screen and background app switching. I doubt I’d like the experience using Stage Manager with several apps onscreen. I really don’t know how Apple would do it without apps suspending or crashing unless they also implement swap file on the older Pros.

I hear people saying Stage Manager won’t even work well on the 11” Pros due to the smaller screen. Guess I’ll find out.

Still baffled by the lack of an event. Brand new iPad Pro. Brand new base model with significant design changes. New notebooks?

My 2020 model 11“ is refurbished. The trade-in value is I suppose reasonable (not really). But I also have a gift card from trading in my 8th Gen. Working with Apple with that stuff is frustrating. You’re just not getting a very good deal.

I used to buy stuff on Swappa, but PayPal is asking for ridiculous things now. Like a photocopy of your driver license. They already have enough of my info. If there’s ever a breach, I don’t want them to know absolutely everything about me.

Anyway, I suppose we’ll see how things will unfold. Stage Manager might be awesome, even for those with the 11”. Time will tell!

Only one way to find out!

I’ve tried the beta on the M1 Pro 11” (with my dummy account) and I’ve found that to be the case for me as well. Used it once and never again.

At normal scaling, I have no doubt I won’t find Stage Manager useful on 12.9” either (it already feels a bit small for split screen). Still waiting on the official release to see if Stage Manager is more viable on 12.9” with display scaling.

Just out of curiosity, and not knowing what the new Pros offer, are you open minded to upgrading or will probably keep what you have?

The 1TB 5G 11” and 12.9” M1 Pros cost me almost $4K combined after tax. It’ll be at least 3-4 years before I upgrade again (was using the 512GB LTE 2017 Pros prior).

These things are too expensive to be upgrading every generation.

If we keep fighting, Apple might even bring Stage manager to the 10.5 inch iPad Pro from 2017. I'm sure they got it working in some way on it already. It's ancient 2006 technology

Considering I just got the Air 5, and considering I just use it for content consumption, and also factoring that I will never update iOS (or iPadOS, still not used to calling it that) from the factory-installed iPadOS 15.6, no, I will neither upgrade to the new Pros, nor update my iPad Air 5 to iPadOS 16. No Stage Manager for me. It‘s okay, I’m used to this.

I never planned on upgrading anyways, mine does everything I need it to, and everything I use it for requires the touchscreen anyways.

Might check it out as a novelty, and maybe for multitasking other stuff on a separate screen like my chats, but I can't see it being a major feature I'd use.

I was recently gifted an M1 iPad Pro ( refurbished base model) & I am still so grateful & excited I have no need to upgrade.

I have a 2018 iPad Pro and I struggle to come up with a compelling set of features that would tempt me to upgrade.

The most compelling capability would be to introduce virtualization on iPadOS, enabling folks to virtualize either apps (eg Xcode) in standalone windows/Stage Manager or full operating systems (eg macOS).

Here's the thing. Stage Manager on the iPad's internal display sucks. It just sucks.

On an external display it could be useful, but currently isn't.

Unfortunately they will not support full resolution on external monitor with my iPad Pro 2020... So I'm looking to change it for an M1 one.

Just make sure you know what you're getting into. The idea of Stage Manager on an external display, and the reality of Stage Manager on an external display are two very, very different things. I tried it out on my M1 iPad and truly hated it.

My (unsolicited) advice would be to wait until the feature releases publicly, and really have a look at the reviews to see if they've managed to make it good.

Thank you for your advice. But I'm not interested in stage manager.

I'm interested in using my ipad at full 4k resolution on my 32" display. At time of writing my ipad pro 2nd gen has 4:3 aspect ratio with black bars on my 32" monitor. I hate this behavior.

The reason I say stage manager is that the feature of having full resolution on an external display is actually tied to stage manager.

It‘s extended display support I want and that will only be available in M1’s (and above) so I am going to wait to see what the new IPP brings - if it has a landscape camera I will upgrade (I have a 2020 IPP) asap.

Landscape camera and extended monitor support (and full browser capabilities) means I can drop the M1 MBA.

Thank you. So with iPadOS 16 I will not be able to use an external monitor with an M1 Ipad pro? Or they have disabled the use of external monitor only in the case I want to use Stage Manager?

It has been a while since I tried it on the beta, but my memory is that it gave the old 4:3 crap on the external display until I enabled Stage Manager. Would be happy for someone else to come along and set me straight if I'm wrong though.

Well if it's only via stage manager it's a shame... Have to wait another three or four months...
