My two cents.

DP 7 - September 2
DP 8 - September 16
GM - September 30
Public Release - October 21

I like this, but doubt there will be 3 weeks between the GM and the GA releases. Typically, that’s only a couple of days - certainly not more than a week.

----------

I thought the Public release would have been more around the 10th (is that not when the hold the Oct. event)?

AFAIK, there’s no "Oct event" scheduled yet. But that does seem to be about the right time for a hardware event - a month after the iPhone event.

Since they have a new public beta program this year, I'd expect to have more than 8 DPs because they're getting way more feedback than they ever did before.

Which means :

DP7 : Sept 1st. (Public Beta 2)
DP8 : Sept 15.
DP9 : Sept 29.
DP10 : Oct 13.
GM : Oct 27.
Release : Oct 28.

There's probably one more PB in the works imo, and maybe 2 or 3 DPs. If the DP6 or 7 is very stable we may not see a developer preview 8.

The only way to know is to wait :)

There's a public page, not in the apple.com domain, that might be used to tell whether parts of the pre-release operating system are complete. That page was not a barometer for 10.6 but did seem good for 10.8 and 10.9:
  • Snow Leopard (2009-08-28 release, 2009-10-22 observation)
  • Mountain Lion (2012-07-10 observation, 2012-07-25 release)
  • Mavericks (2013-09-18 observation, 2013-10-22 release).
I can't guess a number of developer previews, and I'll not share the URL (tease!), but the current view of that page shows nothing related to Yosemite so I guess that a release is not imminent. No surprises there  … back to the sofa …

PS, for search purposes: golden master

I meant to say released to developers.

Thanks, that makes sense. Digging a little deeper, it appears that:
  • golden master 13A598 was seeded, without release notes, and not released
  • golden master 13A603 was seeded, but not released, on 2013-10-19, presumably as a full installer (I don't recall a delta or combo update for that build)
– and I don't know whether release notes accompanied the pre-release seeding of 13A603 … in any case, it's not unusual for a GM of OS X to be without release notes in such contexts :)

Without commenting on the dates: there may be two pre-release golden masters.

I'm actually wondering about that too. If there will be a Public GM and a Developer GM, or just one for both. And if the PB tester will even get a GM.

My guess is that there will be a PB4 and after that either GM or public release. PB3 is way to buggy for a lot of people (no problems here though), but it is quite stable overall.

Well, time will tell! I'm happy enough to be a Public Beta tester, feels great to help :D

Mavericks has disappeared from that page; the disappearance was expected around this time.

Yosemite isn't there yet …

Postscript

2014-10-16 18:38 nothing Yosemite-related at the page that I watch …

What is this mysterious page? Hope GM arrives soon, PB3 completely removed for everyone from purchases, might be a sign...

I would think that if the pre-release was removed, the sign might be that there was a major problem with it.

That very well may be. But why no communication on what's going on for 3 days? Just removed and thats it... How about those who already installed it. I know its a beta, but a little info wouldn't harm anyone.

I think the public beta should get the GM so Apple can iron out all the major issues with the GM in a month before the release.
