I use my iPod classic daily. Either in my car or via earphones. But she’s getting tired and I’m afraid one day soon it will become inoperable. Can you please give me some information on this adapter and mSATA drive you’re talking about? I would be most appreciative.
Thanks

The recommendations came from this forum: https://www.iflash.xyz

Although there are many generic adapters on fleaBay, their quality and reliability are suspect, so I followed the advice given here and got my adapters from iFlash.

Along with my original 7.5G 2.0.4 Classic, I just finished upgrading my old 5G iPod Video to a Solo with a SanDisk 512GB Extreme PRO SDXC, and a new 850mAh battery from iFixit.

I have only the recently acquired 7.5G 2.0.5 Classic to upgrade with a Quad adapter and four Samsung 256GB MicroSDXC EVO cards; just waiting on ordering the cards and new battery. I'm hesitant to crack it open yet as it's current battery still lasts a good long while so it doesn't seem yet in need of replacement. I know that when I open it up, I'm likely to tweak the polished rear case and would need an eBay replacement due to my OCD tendencies.

I do :)

I like having my "listening device" be separate to my phone.

I imagine that eventually my Classic will die or the cost of repairs will become unreasonable. But even then I will probably seek out a direct replacement device rather than use my iPhone for music.

I use my 120GB Silver Classic every day. The battery life is still really good for being nearly 11 years old.

I just added around 1000 tunes to it, so now I only have about 10GB free space!

Combined with my Sony MDR-1A headphones it's a real good experience.

Yes! I still use iPod 4 with chromium back. The best iPOD ever. I have an iPhone but I do not want to use it for music.

Is there many of you that uses Ipods for listening music? It used to seem to me so old fashioned, but my friend just found her old Ipod and started using it again and I was pretty intrigued.
What's your opinion is it worth to buy? I'm listening music every day for about 1 sometimes 2 hours and just not sure if it's really worth of buying it.

With my iPhone 256GB wherein I now can bring all my photo, video, and music libraries with me, I now use that for any short term music listening, such as at the gym, so I don't have to lug around both devices. But for any lengthy sessions, such as flying or long distance driving (the power ports can sometimes be fully used up by others), I always use my iPods due to their longer-running battery life.

I think this is a personal opinion. Every use case is different. I like mine for the car and flights. I don’t need the phone for that and I like to be able to separate it from the phone.

I'm basically anti-apple. From the days of the II-E with its puny screen and non- extensability, I am solidly pc and android.
But I love my 160G classic and in fact just bought a second 120G from China.
Some comments on the 120: when I got it iTunes said it was "corrupted" ; I assume that's the firmware. But iTunes miraculously repaired it (this was a latest version of iTunes!) and nolw it seems to work perfectly.
I did notice a reduction in weight: my (original purchase) 160 weighed about 50% more than the new 120. I am guessing it's becayse the HDD is replaced by a SSD. Comments? Apple in its usual bestial way not only stopped selling classics but actually forced retailers to return unsold units! Thank goodness for China.

I have all the Wagner and other operas, a ton of other classical music, a couple dozen of audiobooks, all of which take up close to 100G. The only serious competition to the classic is I guess the touch but the screen alone is a turnoff, looking more like a phone than a recorder.

I hate apple for discontinuing the classic. Fortunately I was able to procure a new 120G from China. Good thing US law doesn't extend to China. And BTW judging from its lesser weight I'm guessing the HDD is freplaced by a SSD. Another bonus.
[doublepost=1560660117][/doublepost]General question: I see a lot of people talking about replacing HDD's with SSD's, adding SD cards, etc.
I didn't know iPods were that flexible! Do you open the cases and rewire the innards or append external electronics via the mini-USB connector, or what?

There’s a site that sells plug and play ssd boards. https://www.iflash.xyz/

Yes, you open up the case and remove the 1.8 ZIF hard drive. Then you replace the HD with an adaptor called "iFlash" that can use either a Compact Flash, Secure Digital cards or mSATA SSD. No rewiring involved or appending via external.
Do this and you breath new life into an iPod it increases your music capacity (depending on the capacity of the memory card or SSD) and it lowers the battery consumption for longer runtimes via this "upgrade".

Still use my 180 Classic everyday. Or however big it is. It was the largest GB they sold. Lucky for me. I bought it and a month later Apple announced they were dropping it.

Still use my 160 GB iPod at our cabin, its connected to an integrated amplifier via the the universal dock line out.
Have just ordered a HRT iStreamer that hopefully will lift the sound quality with its own DAC.

Also have a working Pod-3G 40 GB, but its not in use anymore.

If it had Spotify support I'd definitely use it. I rarely purchase music so I have about 10 songs in my iTunes library, so no point in carrying it around.

Every single day. It is my ONLY portable music device.

No iPhone, no smartphone, don't want one: Worst invention EVER.

160GB iPod Classic: Best invention EVER Contains my entire music collection and on-the-go podcasts. It is 7 years old and still purring like a kitty. When it dies, I shall send it away to be repaired.

And if Catalina won't sync with it, I won't be upgrading.

Oh, and it is Bluetooth, thanks to a handy little connector, so it works with my AirPods.

Yeah. Streaming services like Spotify rip musicians off like crazy. I support musicians, composers and artists, being one myself. I buy all my music. So the iPod Classic is a perfect fit for me.

And WHY does everyone need to be connected (disconnected) all the time? I love chocolate cake, but 24/7? No WiFi is heaven. No streaming is heaven. Just me and my iPod, strolling down the avenue.

And WHY does everyone need to be connected (disconnected) all the time?

I think it all comes down to convenience, something that seems the norm these days.
I love the fact that I can carry all my music with me on my iPod no need to be on the 'net.
Whether it's personal, in the car, on my home stereo or attached to my speaker dock all my music,(with me) all the time!

I have 3 classics right now. I have a 3rd gen 15GB, but the battery is starting to fail. I have a 20GB 4th gen, weak battery and touchy headphone port. The main one is a thin 6th gen 160GB. It works just fine, but there's some specs of dust trapped under the screen. I might order a new 5.5 gen iPod to upgrade with an SSD and use as my main. Can't stand using my phone for music, just too much other crap going on. I like to get lost in the music.

I use my iPod Classic to this day. Main reason is convenience. It's very easy to switch songs on this device my feel when driving and through the click sounds.

But the main reason I use it is because I picked up some parts from China and the US to upgrade the drive inside of mine to use a RAID-0 array of micro SD cards to give me storage up to 1.6TB. Put in a larger back, and a 3000mAh battery you can easily find on eBay, and then I got a new mainboard for 2.0.5 to upgrade my 1.0 mainboard, and I now have a player where you can hit play for audio and come back to it in 14 days and it still has power left over. That thing is incredibly battery efficient. The reason it doesn't last long normally is because the hard drive sucks down a lot of power. Replace it with micro SD cards and an iFlash.xyz board and it's extremely battery efficient. No issues when playing back video, hires, audio... nothing.

One thing the iPod Classic does is smart playlists. If you set up the playlists right, it will recalculate them on the fly. No other player I've used can do this. I discovered this on a long road trip where I had a Not Recently Played playlist and noticed that the count decreased as I was driving when I'd jump out and jump back in. So with my extended battery life, I can charge this and synchronize it once a month and I'm fine.

Watch out when you go over 1TB though. On mine, it won't format the drive if it's over 1TB in size.

To get around this, you have to restore the iPod in iTunes and wait for it to throw an error (which it would do at 50% of the progress bar). Unplug the iPod and it will say, "Connect To Power." (this is because they want you to be on power for the firmware install..... Instead of connecting it to power, boot into disk mode and format the drive from your PC as 16kB clusters (or however the disk format works in a Mac -- I've only tried this on a PC). When that format is done, unplug it from the PC and reset it. Connect it to power and then it will finish the firmware install on the formatted drive. The unit will now report all storage free.

And I had to do this when I first got 1.2TB and now that I'm up to 1.6TB. Just keep this post in mind in case you break the 1TB barrier because I first thought it wouldn't accept it until I played with it a bit and figured it out. You can definitely go over 1TB..... I think the limit on a PC is 2TB because of the FAT32 partition limit at 16kB/sector. I guess a Mac formatted iPod can go further.

Rapid Repair is expensive but I hear they are good. I used to buy an SSD until I discovered iFlash.xyz

You can get an iFlash Quad and use up to 4 micro SD cards. It will take up to 400GB cards just fine. I haven't tried the 512GB cards yet since they're not readily available, but if I get one, I'll definitely give it a try.

But most importantly on the upgrade..... if you don't have an iPod 5th generation (5.5 too) or a 7th generation, do not go over 128GB. So if your iPod classic (6th generation) is not running firmware 2.0.4 or 2.0.5, going over 128GB will yield you nothing unless you use Rockbox. The system can't address it. You can get a 2.0.4 or 2.0.5 mainboard on eBay easily enough and you can just swap them out.... but keep that in mind if you try it.

The iPod Classic is not hard to open. You pretty much have to pry it open on the edges and once you get it open, it just comes off. Nothing too involved..... but it can bend the base plate if you do it badly enough... but you can bend it back or just get a new plate. Just be careful when you take it apart not to pry apart where the screen is or near the ribbon cable on the left side (when looking it from the bottom).

You can buy a 3000mAh battery with a large backing to the unit for about $20 on eBay. :) Considering your stock battery is probably 650mAh, this gives you at least 4x playback time..... for $20.

Lots of good information in this post... Thank you!

I have a iPod Video 5.5 80GB Enhanced. I understand that to install a 3000mAh battery in my iPod I have to remove the hard drive and use the iFlash Quad, will it work if I use the iFlash with a eSata ssd drive?

The 3000mAh batteries that sell on eBay use 3.8v and the original battery use only 3.7v , will this little difference cause any problem or malfunction in the iPod Video 5.5 80GB.

I'm planning to do this upgrades to my iPod Video 80GB Enhanced, do I need to buy a bigger back or base plate or the plate that currently has from factory is good enough to fit this 3000 mAh battery?

What about the headphone jack, will this battery fit with it in the back plate or the headphone jack needs to be replaced as well?

Thank you again for all this information!

I have a 7th Generation, originally 160GB, updated with an iFlash Quad to 1.2TB. Currently happily runs with just under 48,000 Apple Lossless songs. I recently decided to replace the battery with the big 3000mAh version. There is a seller on Ebay who sells the battery complete with deeper case back, hold switch and headphone socket. The combination was only $30 shipped from China. It's a good way of making sure everything fits. The case back also comes engraved with bigger capacities, mine says '1TB'.

I have a 6.5g that I've rockboxed it and it works great. I generally will use it or my iPhone for listening on the go, depending on what I feel like listening to. I've tried to get iTunes to work with it but I honestly can't get it to work with the way I have my stuff organized, so I primarily only use iPod OS when I need to use an accessory.

I also have a Mini with a CF upgrade and a Shuffle. I might try to get some iPod manager to work with them, but I accidentally broke the Mini's play button while doing the CF upgrade.

How do you copy the lossless songs over? On my iPod it only ever allows me to copy them over when I set it to compress them first (bringing them to 256). There’s definitely a difference in my car.
