I follow women photographers who mostly shoot nature, family, maternity, and weddings. And I don't follow boudoir accounts.

So no.
It seems that insta has become a college kids posting website. I don't consider it to be a serious photography website anymore. Sure you can make money with it and get exposure but is it serious for professional work.

then you aren't following the right people.

If you can "make money and get exposure" why wouldn't it be for serious professional work? Do you have better suggestions where a working photographer should post their photos to be seen by the public? If so, please post them here, because that's the entire point of this thread.

The biggest problem I have with IG is the number of bots taking over.

I like 500px but I wonder how their algorithms work.

@mollyc thanks for putting this up. My main problem for quite some time with Instagram is that I simply do not see what my friends and people I follow post - I actively have to visit the stream of each one individually. And of course they do not see what I post. I am still on because, well, they are. 🙃

500px doesn’t show me much skin type of whatever gender - probably due to the tags I used, as well as the kind of photography from the people I follow there. My main gripe (and admittingly it is a silly one) with them now is that they promote programs like Luminar AI.

I too forgot totally about Glass - they seem to make it available on Android and desktop soon, I’ll go back to it and take a look… and try to convince some friends to follow. Thanks everyone.

You can set the search results on 500 px to not show nudes. For the most part it stays hidden if you don't want to see it.

@Slartibart glass works on desktop now; that's primarily how I post and view it. 🙂 I think they are actively working on an Android version right now, so it's closer than the "some day" that's been promised for the last year.

I recall one problem where if you’re searching a common hashtag, like “Architecture,” someone liked to slip inappropriate content in there. However, I suspect this is likely a problem on any site where you have millions of users and moderators can’t be right on top of it.

I did like Glass Photo for their commitment to protecting image rights - they would not use the image for site promotion, or retain any perpetual license. And that position may stem from them being a paid subscription service.

If IG offered a valued service as this under a paid model - I would be all in.

i'd pay for ig if it got rid of all the crap...but clearly ig is moving more and more to tiktok with the emphasis on stupid reels.

When I was on IG, and for some (bot) reason I got bumped off - that may have been good for me. I would receive spam group posts to get me to buy their service to increase the 'likes' on my site.

I reported these - maybe that worked against my IG presence.

I have a Flickr account since 2003 and was a Pro member for a long long time, until they started rising the subscription costs without any real and useful benefits. So, two years ago, I canceled my Pro subscription and I don't use my account anymore.
Back in the early 2000's I was fairly active in the Flickr Communities, it worked well, you shared your photos in groups and lots of people used to react, give "awards", rank photos, run contests, etc. But over time I started using it more as a storage space, with most of my albums set private.
Two years ago I bought a Synology NAS and started hosting my photos myself, being in control of what I want to share and to who. Best decision ever (considering the storage / sharing with friends and family scenario).

But alongside the fact that Flickr Pro accounts became way too expensive, I think the main reason why the site went downhill is the fact that when social networks became a thing, they weren't able to get on board and failed adapting to the new reality of mobile social media. Flickr still worked as an old school computer adapted website. When they started to catch up, it was too late. 500px was a little ahead and Instagram was starting to rise.

And unfortunately they still haven't figured out a way to become attractive again and honestly I think it's too late. If Instagram goes down, people will seek for "fresh" and new stuff. A new competitor will naturally appear...

I am becoming increasingly disenchanted with Instagram, for a lot of reasons. I loved it when it was first born and was just about sharing images of your day in real time. As it grew, I appreciated seeing images from fellow photographers in one location. But as with most things, as soon as it sold to Facebook, it started going downhill, and it gets worse every day.

I never understood the point of Flickr, other than as a photo host. But in its original days, it was also a photo sharing platform, and I know a lot of connections were made, but I guess other than hosting portfolios or private galleries, I never really understood how it worked. I see people saying with more regularity now, "maybe we should go back to Flickr" and I wonder if that will gain some momentum.

But I don't know how to use it that way. Suggestions? 🙂

(I already host through SmugMug and don't need to pay for Flickr Pro for hosting, but if it gave me a viable alternative to IG, I'd seriously consider it.)
I'm a long time Pro user since 2006 or so. I like it.

I always wonder if it's a time of day thing. I could use the same tags and get vastly different results.
It’s no different with Flickr. If I search on my iPad via Safari, then on my MacBook via Firefox, same search filters, materially different results. Sort of diminishes any thought of competence I might have in their systems. Same as the continual stream of updates for the same iOS apps. I get the impression as long as everyone’s making money it doesn’t matter what the users think. And since much tech these days is based on a VC model where making money isn’t a criteria, we get sh*t.

I have a flicker pro account since 2008. Even though the price has gone up a lot over the years I have way too many images there to move. I find the groups I belong to very engaging. Having images on flicker is also a good backup of last resort. I say last resort because they only allow jpeg's.

Received email from Glass Photo. Glass Anywhere is now available.

Per the email: "We’re so excited to share Glass with you. Get your first year for $20."
I love Glass! I am slowly weaning myself from IG.

I still use Flickr occasionally (I don't really use anything more often than occasionally, even posting here!) and it's still pretty nice for sharing photos.

I think the closest to the good parts of Instagram (without the bad) is Vero, but there really aren't many people on it yet. It does still have video and such, but it's chronological timeline focused. I've got an account there but haven't actually posted anything yet. I'll probably get around to it soon!

I like the concept of Glass, but I think they messed up with their monetization. If viewing was free and posting required a subscription, it would be a lot more successful. But I (and a few others I know) aren't going to sign up for a subscription without even seeing who else is on it, or what the quality is like! I would happily pay for a good platform, but I think they need to bootstrap it somehow if they want it to take off. The one person I know who did pay for it stopped pretty quickly because there just wasn't enough there to justify the price.

Actually Glass has a 2 week free trial period, and it's now open for all via a web browser (previously it was iOS only). A lot more people have joined lately, although nothing near as large as Instagram. Most people I know who have tried it out really love it.

I do like your idea of free for browsing and paid to post, but they only just allowed profiles to be public recently. Although, maybe that means they are going that way....

The email I received has a link for $20 first year of Glass Photo. Maybe during signups it will reflect that or I got a special email.

I too favor the public view model with a paid posting option.

Signed up for Vero. Only could use the app on phone (Pixel). Was not available for Android tablet. The Windows desktop app displayed an error about screen resolution - would not function. Perhaps these issues can be worked out.

If there was a way to share your photos with non-subscribers, that would definitely change things! I'm definitely willing to pay for a place to host photos that I can share with anyone. But as far as I can tell you still need to subscribe to use the web UI and there's nowhere I can just look at existing accounts.
