I've thought about this but am worried that the 4G will essentially be the same as the 3GS (a bit like how the 3G to 3GS was a fairly pointless upgrade).

I'm probably going to hold on to my 3GS.

It continues to amaze me that people can think 3G --> 3GS was a minor upgrade.

Anyway, no, I'm keeping my 3GS, probably for another year (kept my 2G for 2 yrs), and if I just have to have the 4G I'll just pay. But since 90% of what I want is software, I can't imagine what the 4G could lure me with.

I won't be selling my 3gs untill I know what's in store for the next iPhone. The value may drop off slightly, but I would rather wait and see if it would be worth the money to upgrade. The 3gs should hold it's value pretty well, and my iPhone is minty so I know I'll be able to sell it, and even if I loose 50 bucks, I don't mind. It's worth it to see for me.

I sold my O2 prepay mint condition 3GS that i have had for 9-10 months (bought £449) for £355 cash and im putting the ££ towards a 4G.
So what's the point of your original post?

"If" the iphone 4G is notably slimmer and has better battery life then i will probably ditch the touch, till then i'll happily see an improved bank balance!

Now you're saying that you might not get another iPhone?

Yawn, flip flopping kids that are indecisive and premature.

TBH, I was one of those. I thought the 3G was good at the time, don't get me wrong, but once I played with a 3GS at the Apple store I couldn't go back. I was scanning CL for days waiting for a good deal, and jumped on the opportunity to trade my 3G and some cash for a 3GS:)

I'm going to hold off on playing with the 4G for a while, at least until the Dev Team is able to jailbreak it:D

Until the 4G or what ever Applr calls it comes out! In July, 4 months away I have no idea! what if the 4G has norhing I want nor need!

Exactly. Also, at this point Apple is late with the next iPhone. Why? Because we haven't seen many reports of unidentified iPhone models out in the wild or in mobile ads databases.

Also, take into account that Apple usually brings out it's media event about the next iPhone OS right around this month. So far, nothing. Apple is late behind iPhone schedule. It wouldn't surprise me at this point if Apple releases the next iPhone in an August/September time-frame.

iPhone 3G with 2.2.1 ----> 3GS is a minor upgrade
iPhone 3G with 3.x ------> 3GS is a major upgrade

That has been my experience. People forget how much 3.x slows the iPhone 3G down so that when they upgrade it seems like a huge leap. Lemme tell you, I'm still rockin' 2.2.1 on my iPhone and I couldn't be happier with the performance compared to the 3GS.

I don't see the point of selling my 3GS now, in the hope that a new phone is released somewhen in June/July (3-4 months) and use a different phone for that period. I bought the phone because I wanted it, why would I spend quarter of a year using my old phone :D

I'll wait, and see if it's released, if it's a worthy upgrade, and wait until all the g33ks have got hold of it, and the bugs are sorted, and there's plenty of stock, so probably about 1-2 months after release.

Agreed. I don't see the point of selling this early either.

Ugh, for the life of me, I really don't remember 2.2.1. It was my first firmware, with me getting the phone in April/May-ish, so I guess I probably wouldn't have had it for too long (maybe 2 months or so).

i have a 3G my wife's got a 3GS. I get the 4G when it comes out. :D

This. I feel bad for all the 3GS owners that are stuck in a contract. I say this because when I was in line buying my 3G the only people who were allowed to buy the 3G were the ones who had a FULL upgrade to use or new contract.

How long till the first.
I signed a contract.( but I didn't really mean it)
I want the new phone ( now) ( for free)
it's not fair.
I should be let out if my contract
blah blah.

I reckon 2 weeks. And then the wingers will start.

First off, your avatar describes to you a "T".

With that said, Apple is not late; there is nothing, no where, stating that Apple is not releasing a new iPhone this summer - just as they have done for the last three years. Obviously they're not late, it's not even summer yet.

Also keep in mind, 99% of all leaks prior to the launch of a new iPhone are incorrect or fake. So with that in mind, take your flawed theology and keep it to yourself.

I do feel sorry for the people stuck in a contract and won't be able to upgrade to the new phone when it comes out. I know someone who started an
18 month contract yesterday with a 3GS. madness. I bought my 3G and 3GS on prepay and use my sim only contract in them so I will be able to buy one on release day if I feel it's worth the upgrade.

There is absolutely no reason why they wouldn't be able to sell their 3GS to purchase the new one. Wait, there is one: laziness

Ergo, no reason to feel sorry for them :)

They can still sell their 3GS and buy a prepay 4G iPhone in the summer and swap sims.

Why do you feel sorry?
Their 3G or 3GS iphone will all of a sudden stop working once the new iphone comes out?

Not sure what prices are like in the US, but in the UK, you can't even get a FIRST gen iPhone for less than £120. My dad just bought a one with a broken screen for not much less! The 3GS will be worth silly money even when the 4g comes out. Because I kept a contract from the iPhone 3G, I got a factory unlock on my 3GS so it's going to be worth plenty come 4G time. I had the good sense (kinda) to buy the 3GS PAYG too, so I can upgrade to 4G on simplicity contract.

Roffle. I won't be feeling sorry for anyone. But kudos on the sarcasm. And their 3G/S won't stop working, they'll just crack the rear casing.
