Hey

I am a windows user and will be getting my first mac (a macbook pro) for college very soon. I was curious as to what the percentage is of ppl who have sent in their macbook pros for repair... so i decided to do a poll. If you guys could also plz post what the reason is for you sending it in, i would appreciate it.

Thanks,

I don't have one but my sister does. She brought it into the Apple store because the screen wasn't latching shut anymore. It took a little over 2 weeks to get it back which would have been awful, except that they said they noticed that her display was on the verge of dying so they replaced that too... All for free. She has Applecare, though. Also what does suck is if yours isn't latching shut they have to replace the whole case to fix it.

Do the new MBPs even have latches though? I notice the MBs have magnets. Anyway, they're nice machines, and will soon be nicer with the imminent Santa Rosa update, which I think is worth waiting for.

Twice. Battery completely failed and hard drive packed it in. All was fine then one morning I turned it on and all I got was a couple click noises and then the folder with a Q mark inside it.

My MBP is about 6 mos old, so I'm averaging a major break down every 3 mos so far. But IMO these are things that could happen to any laptop.

Zero. It has been perfect, as was my 4.5 year old TiBook that the MBP replaced (my wife still uses it daily).

Look closely... That's a latch, but it is magnetic, it hides above the screen and get's pulled out by the magnets, clicking in place. You press the button and it pops the latches out so you can open the MBP.

My dad's Rev A MBP had to go in for repair because it had the temperamental DVD drive issue where it wouldn't read or burn certain disks. Fixed under warranty.

Although not a Pro, my friend has MacBook 2.0 Core Duo, been sent to Apple 3 times, 12 issues all together!

Rich.

I HAVE gotten a new battery sent to me though.

On my old Rev A Macbook I sent it in once to the plastic replaced (discoloration). Since then, it's been great! My mom uses it a lot daily!

3 repairs, replaced when it was going to have to go in for #4

- 3 dead logic boards
- loose hinge
- dead pixels
- cpu whine
- audio jack not working after 3 logic boards

Please note. That was a Rev A. 1.83. My new C2D model is great and has no flaws except a broken piece of plastic on the key which will easily be fixed by Apple.

Overall, I am very happy with my new MacBook Pro.

i'm going to college in september and will be getting a new mbp as well, but i'm more concerned about being ripped off by getting tiger and ilife'o6, when Leapord is suppose to be comming out in october, with (hopefully) ilife leapord or '07.

Sad experience so far with my MBP

I've sent my MBP 2.16Ghz CD in three times so far in less than a year since I've had it for the following:
2 new displays after the others just quit working and went totally black
New power inverter board
New hard drive

Also, I'm on my 5th battery after having 2 of the recalled batteries initially... the original was on the recall list and the replacement they sent was on the recall list when it came to the house. The others have just quit all together or wouldn't hold a charge.

I also had a new power adapter sent my way after the first would not show on the computer as charging the battery when it was dead and the LED's would not light/work correctly...

To be honest I'm disappointed with the whole repair process/support with Apple and getting the run around with after I spent 7 years as a Mac Tech Specialist for my school district here at home and still showed as a Apple Repair Tech in Apple's support/repair computer system for repairs that I called in or ordered repair parts. You would think with all these problems it would warrant a replacement computer.

I actually never sent it in, but dropped it twice for a day each time at a repair facility. One was for the replacement of the logic board and once to check about problems with the battery, which was subsequently replaced. Before this replacement, the battery was already exchanged with the battery recall last summer. Now I am on the third battery and it also is starting to behave problematically.

The only problem here is that the negative numbers will skew high, and not necessarily a representative sampling from the builds in general.

I'm not sure what targeted, opt-in internet poll sample error rates are (I'd be willing to bet north of +/-20), but I'm sure we'd have a few folks that would know.

1) Lint under screen

2) Uneven backlighting

Of the people I know with MBP's ( 3 ) here is the rundown of repairs.... logic board, battery x2, screen x2. It has to be costing Apple a small fortune just to be replacing the screens alone. Apple's QA process of these "pro" laptops leaves quite a bit to be desired. Don't get me wrong, for the most part I do love the unit, but these hardware issues seem to plague this design.

LOL QC is a issue, watch what you say as they will call you a troll if you complain lol

yeah appears as things are goign to be 50/50 but u never know... im sure there are a lot of mac users that dont use this site tho or any other mac forums because they havent had any problems.. o well :)

Haven't had to send it it for repairs, although if someone else (maybe on these forums) had my machine, it would probably be sent in.

I've no cracks but certainly the gaps that other people have observed on their own Macbooks...and returned.

I've brown staining (I've a CD) that I've yet to get repaired (will be doing it soon).

Other than that, I've nothing. I don't really care about the gaps or staining, as the unit is functional and will do what I ask it to do. I'll be trying to get the staining fixed just for crap and giggles.

MBP 1.83 ghz - built March 2006

I carry this with me at all times.

Logic board after 3 months - went dead

Battery on recall - cover started lifting as it expanded/bloated, I kept the recalled battery anyways and use it as a spare.

Logic board after 11 months - went dead again, supposedly got a new and improved one.

Now, mysteriously will no longer connect via VGA to my 24" LCD monitor. Bummer.

Makes a lot of racket and has a tremendous amount of heat, could probably fry an egg on the bottom of the case (no kidding).

The now 5 year old 1.6 ghz Dell 8200 that it replaced had a way better screen, pulled it out of closet during repair periods, it is 1400 X 1050, clearer and brighter! Briefly considered going back to it for photo editing. That lawsuit has merit.

Mag power connector is starting to fray, will fail soon.

A few dents and scratches in the case that might upset someone else.

Everything else works perfect.

Was a good deal then (March 2006) vs PC versions with same CPU, cannot say the same now though, way over priced as PC pricing declined significantly with volume ramps.

But I cannot live without OSX even though all of my apps have PC equivalents.

So I read the writing on the wall and got the Applecare days before expiry of the one year warranty. You should too.

Keep in mind that the results you receive here will be skewed towards the people who have had problems. People whose MacBooks are trouble-free will probably not be surfing these forums, and even if they are, may not be motivated enough to vote in your thread. People with an axe to grind, on the other hand...

I can guarantee you that 3/7 of all MBP's do not need to be repaired - but that is what the poll suggests.
