I picked $12K in the poll. Hoping to get; 12c, 96G RAM, VegaII Duo for that. I'd like to go 1TB SSD in T2 land, but unless that jump is under $300, which seems unlikely, then just the 256 SSD from Apple.
The afterburner card appears aimed squarely at my use case - 8K video - so I'm interested, but until we know capabilities and cost...
FWIW, my strategy is to stick with Apple parts out of the gate. Yes, I'm paying a premium - particularly for the RAM, but I want an airtight AppleCare situation the first 2-3 years. The exception being 4-8TB of NVMe on PCIe internally for apps/media/scratch that I can quickly remove if need be. Note that part of the strategy is expecting larger DIMMs from third parties to drop in cost per GB over the next 2 years, making the move to 384GB RAM cheaper than it would be now.

Would anyone like to how much they think the Vega II MPX Module or Vega II Duo MPX Module will be?

I'm guessing $1500 for Vega II
and maybe $2500 for Vega II Duo

maybe I'm being too hopeful.

Damn each part is going to be so expensive to upgrade to decent spec that its going to be crazy expensive.

To get this system to be quicker at GPU rendering than my nvidea 2 x 980ti system, I think I'll need either a Vega II Duo, or a Vega II + Radeon VII. Price list please Apple!

Based off of Quadro prices my best guess is $3k for each single and $6k for each duo. I'd put a range at plus or minus 50% from that.

I’m expecting a pricy card but not that much. The Vega II it’s barely faster than a standard Radeon VII and that’s a 700$ card(out of production). Only advantages are noise free operation, 32GB VRAM, and Infinity Fabric support(also good for memory pooling). Only very few users really need that much memory and/or Infinity Fabric support, therefore if they don’t price this competively many users will just go for the Radeon VII or other options available later in 2020. Interestingly while the duo version will be Mac exclusive, the 32GB Vega II will be available also for PC and lately AMD GPU have always been far cheaper that Nvidia cards(especially at the high end). My guess it’s about 1500$ for a Vega II, of course I maybe very wrong;)

Probably on the 'solo' versus Duo difference.

The Duo has another GPU , HBM2 memory subsystem which isn't going to be cheaper than the first one. In fact, the two together may cost more if they have to be selection binned to fit the more challenging thermal environment. There is much more supporting assemblying also.

There is also perhaps another connector ( unless the 'solo' board has a connector to "no where" ). There are two offboard Infinity Fabric connectors here.

If Apple is making pay for connector to no where the base price will be higher if sharing that cost across both versions. If not the shared base of stuff isn't near $500 of stuff. ( a PCI-e switch , 2 TB controllers , and some ports , and two other edge connectors ). What is driving the solo is the GPU die , HBM2 and the Inifinity Fabric abilities. That's the bulk of the price. So if add another it will be most of the price of the first.

A lot of the folks complaining about the price don't want or need the Xeon. That's kinda the whole problem. It may be reasonably priced when compared to similar Xeon workstations, but that won't stop folks who want/need a headless Mac that's got something a bit better than an i7 8700 and an iGPU from wondering where their machine is. Xeon workstations have been an option in the past when the cMP was being kept up to date, but it's much harder now to make the same sort of jump.

Perhaps thats part of it. I do wish there were a cheaper entry level machine for enthusiasts. But I think a lot of the people are balking on the price when they can today buy an AMD processor with PCI 4.0 that will spank the 7,1 (whenever it ships) and spend a lot less as well.

The MacPro seems to be the best bang for the buck in terms of longlivity and expandability. So I might have to go with it. As my currenty 5,1 is fairly fast enough for my daily work (ok, could be faster), I'd go for the basic MacPro but extend the SSD to 1 or 2TB. RAM should be ok as I'm currently using 32GB and never hit the full size. Basic GPU should be ok too as I don't have time for gaming (anymore :) )

I voted for the base configuration as I don't need the capabilities of this system but I own every major variation (1,1 / 3,1 / 5,1 / 6,1) of the Mac Pro Apple has produced so I'll probably pick one of these up too. Perhaps Micro Center will offer a sizeable discount on it like they did with the iMac Pro.
