Let's see:

Mac Pro 1,1
2.66 GHz
11GB RAM
ATI Radeon 5770
4X1TB Caviar Black

changed out dvd drive with from old pc lying around
swapped 8800GT with apple 5770 card
added 4gb OWC ram
replaced front fan assembly (previous owner didn't mention he broke it, arsewipe.)
bought 30" ACD
magic mouse
apple isight

current total of a rock solid machine: priceless

I can't remember exact numbers:

Mac Pro 3.1 (student discount)
+4 Gb RAM
Apple 5770
Sapphire 5870 2GB Toxic
WD caviar black
HP 2475w Monitor
Soundblaster Titanium Soundcard
Windows 7

Total: around £3500

Upon reflection, too much but it has been a great single machine workhorse for a main computer and a gaming computer.

I got my pre-owned '09 quad for $1650 + CA sales tax, which isn't too bad, considering it came with an airport card (albeit an older 802.11g).

I upgraded memory (3x4GB) and storage (3x1TB) for another $330 + shipping from OWC. I do music and audio, so I just grabbed the cheapest display at BestBuy which is a 22" LG (1920x1080) for appr. $175

I find the cost not too objectionable, and I'll drop in another CPU somewhere along the way. Planning to keep this machine as my main workstation as my main axe until end of 2013/early 2014, and for longer after that as a secondary machine until it conks out.

It's almost depressing to list it all out, but I have no regrets because it's a beast of a machine.
