How much of the 64GB of flash really show up when you boot it up? I know some machines say like 120, but really are like 105GB.

Anyone know?

Thanks

I think I read 49GB (its not that some are bigger or smaller, its the operating system and installed applications)

Im curious about this too. Before removing anything, what's available as free space?

Yeah, it would help - I'm close to the purchase.

Right now you can see I have a MBP with 120 GB and I hardly ever put anything on it, still have 95.1 GB's free. So space isn't an issue for me... I can always put it onto a external hard drive (like music).

But I am curious to what you really do get.

Apparently 49GB is available with the standard install.

Apple in its infinite wisdom has decided 2 GB standard memory is enough for these new Airs, though some would disagree. I'm probably going with the base memory but I'm having a hard time deciding if the $200 extra to go from 64 GB to 128 GB storage is worth it. I read somewhere that when the flash storage memory begins to fill up, the system slows down. If I only have 64 GB, it's likely to be mostly filled.

Where did you read that about it slowing down? I don't think I'll have a problem with that, I don't put much on my computer anymore. I don't play video games on my computer anymore (360 for that...).

Mine just came in Friday and was sitting at 50GB stock (I got the 64GB SSD base model)....isn't a big deal as I just carry a 16GB flash drive with me but it is something to take into consideration....

I also think the 2GB memory is sufficient - the MBA slows down with much that would take more than 2GB RAM anyhow so it's not a worthy investment - I had 8GB on my Macbook Pro and only notice it slightly with 95% of my day to day stuff....

This may be an odd place to ask this... but do you, or anyone, know if you can run a virtual machine from a USB flash drive? Say, under Parallels, run a 20GB WinXP VM from a 32GB USB drive?

Wow, I am curious about this too... cause I use winblows so infrequently that it'd be kinda cool to be able to use a USB drive for a basic install of XP or Win7 then pop it in when I need it and save 10 GB on my laptop's hard drive.

Anyone?

I got the 64GB today thinking it would be enough but now I am worried. I plan to install Photoshop and a few other programs. I don't plan on using too many other apps or storing movies, but I do want to use lightroom and upload pics while on the go temporarily. Should I just exchange for 128GB?

To each his own. To ME, $100 is worth it for 128 vs 64... as I imagine today 64 would be enough, but just barely. Not knowing what's coming with the AppStore, I want the space. Look at AppStore for iPhone... before AppStore 8GB might be enough, but once AppStore launched it caused me to download a hundred apps... and we now know AppStore is coming to OSX "within 90 days" ... so if ya got the extra Benjamin to spare, do it.

48.5GB after all standard software updates on our store's demo machine. Tight but not super constricting for the kind of user this is aimed at. The 128GB one will probably sell a bit better.

Its not $100 its $200 for the extra 64gb.

oops my bad... well either way... it's a $1200 upgrade if you buy the 64 and want to upgrade later ;-)

I agree that the extra 64 is good but 200 is steep. I can buy a 1TB time capsule for 219. Now that is a way better deal. I can save my entire life on that thing. Plus if you want to upgrade later you can always sell it.

I have done it before, running windows server 2008R2(basically windows 7) off of an external hard drive in VirtualBox.

But it is slow, and with no connectivity on the MBA other than USB 2.0, there isn't much you can do about it.

As for running it off of a 32gb flash drive, make sure you have a damn good flash drive, because if you don't it will be incredibly laggy.

What I am going to do is to try and run VirtualBox on my desktop and set it up with RDP. Then I can just use it over the network and it will be powered by the desktop CPU. That way you basically get unlimited storage, more ram, and a MUCH faster processor. It will have almost no impact on the performance of your Air whatsoever.

Edit:yes, $200 for 64gb is very steep. SSDs should cost at most $2/GB these days, and the prices will drop super fast over the next few months as new chips come out. All Apple upgrades are rip offs, thats why it is best to just stick with the base model systems. If you absolutely need 128GB, just buy the 13.3" version.

Well the idea of a Macbook Air is it's ultra-portability... if you're wanting to use an external drive regularly, or rely on it, then an MBA isn't the right fit. However, if you only need it for occasional use, then yeah MBA is great... but it still circles to the fact that 64GB is rough if you have apps\songs\photos given iPhones alone hold half of that.

I'm sure it'll work but the performance will depend on the read and write speeds of your usb drive.
