Here's another iPad air screen with processes sorted by ram in use instead for fun

Here is a snapshot of ram/processor use on iPad air gen 1 8.1.2 jailbroken using a utility called cocoatop

Kernel_task includes an idle process just fyi

And that tells me that the iPad Air could have used a second gig of RAM. I know, I know, my mastery of all things obvious is astounding. Also, why only 8.1.2 if you don't mind me asking.

IMO having a lean system is not overrated, it allows more apps to be cached in ram. These screens aren't a fresh boot, but including the 'cached processes' stats is important because it shows at least in my devices case, I really am not wasting much ram, even though 'running processes' makes it appear that way.

That's what I've been trying to say. Sadly, I've been failing.

8.1.2 is most recent jailbreak, jailbreak or die ;)

And yes I don't know why anyone on iOS wouldn't want more ram

Well that seems rather lazy of the jailbreaking community. :p 8.3 has a lot of good performance improvements.

Edit: As for why people on iOS are arguing against more RAM ... it's for a few reasons I'd wager. There are some people that think a second gig of RAM would have a huge detrimental effect on battery life. There are those that believe more RAM would only encourage developers to make more resource heavy apps. And there are those that likely don't want the next one to have more RAM on the basis that they think it will make their phone less relevant. There might also be a few that think adding more RAM would be a capitulation on Apple's end, though I'm not sure on that one.

I really doubt the battery life claims, but I totally hear the fear from older device owners. I definitely felt that when the air gen2 was released. It hasn't pushed me to sell my older air, but I will be extremely reluctant with installing iOS 9 for example.

To be perfectly honest, a person should be cautious when updating regardless of OS. A person should always let others do it first and then let them tell you how it runs for your own decision making. That being said, I never wait.

How much RAM does your phone use on boot?

Thats why i have air2 now, but unfortunately it is still reloading apps often. With apps like PSTouch it is a real problem if you didnt save the project. Some sysinfo from air2 (not after rebooting):

To be perfectly honest, I'd try Kit Kat on my Nexus 6 if it were possible. I'd probably go back to Lollipop quickly, but it'd be nice to see what the difference was in terms of UI fluidity. That being said, I've never downgraded a single system ever... aside from Windows 10 on my SP 3 a couple of times and my old Air once or twice. But never for mobile.

System is using just about the same amount as my Nexus 6. Is this normal for the iPad? And what applications do you have running for it to have an active of almost 800mb?

Wow I sure hope you have some apps cached or active at the moment , not used to looking at those categories

Dont know about the nexus6, but nexus5 runs better on lollipop. OPO runs like melted butter with lollipop and feels like a new phone.

I wonder why.

Edit: Maybe ART being updated helped the Nexus 5 and OPO?

There are, like i said, it is not after rebooting. Took another after closing all apps and opened only apps: opera, ps touch, tapatalk, photos and sysinfoApp:

It is just for showing why air1 should have had 2gig ram. Air2 runs much better than air1 and not having as much as reloading/crashing like air had.

Ps touch must be a real heavy hitter, sounds like no multitasking with that app open on 1gb devices. That illustrates one of Michael's points against upgrading ram alienating older users pretty well :)

Adobe seems to use RAM like a fat man eats cake. :D

Just took a screenshot after rebooting

TBH, I expect you to know everything about phones. I also expect MRU to know everything about phones. Also, as an aside... I feel like I'm getting argumentative in this thread and I really don't want to be. But I have such strong opinions... D:
I don't think you were being argumentative at all. We can't have differing opinions without any one of us being argumentative. We can just differ! :)

PSTouch is not using much ram when launched. Of course it needs more space when editing. I closed all apps, took the screenshot (upper one) and then launched PSTouch and took another screenshot (lower one) :

Interesting, I would imagine the usage must be all/some of your apps (that have been opened since reboot) cached in ram. I haven't really been watching , but I doubt many apps last cached very long on my 1gb device. Probably kicking 'out of use' apps out of ram on the regular.

Do you use many tabs in opera? I don't have any data, but I would wager the browser is the heaviest then. Though I don't know where the WebKit process would be categorized in your app. If you see in one of my screens there is both safari and WebKit.
