"Yes I have a flash drive, but how can I make a bootable mac OS installer without another mac?"

Read my post #23 again.
I did not recommend that you try to make a USB flashdrive installer.

I DID give you instructions for putting a copy of the OS that will run the Mac onto the flashdrive.

You are not installing an "installer" onto it.
You are installing the OS onto it.

If you have a flashdrive, and can get to internet recovery, why don't you try what I suggested above?
It may get the Mac "up and running to the finder" (even though you're boot drive is external).

@212rikanmofo

If you have put the Fusion Drive back together, get into the recovery partition, fire up Disk Utility, and run First Aid on your fresh Fusion Drive, and see if those old errors are now gone. The process you did to re-fuse the drive has set it up as the HFS+ Macintosh HD, so thats all you need. No need to reformat it, and definitely do NOT reformat to APFS as it isn't compatible with Fusion Drives in HS.

If all is ok with First Aid, then you should be able to proceed to install macOS High Sierra through Recovery.

You are given the option of Mountain Lion, because that is the OS your Mac originally came with. Use the Internet recovery if necessary, so it downloads the installer files required for High Sierra.

You can De-fuse the fusion drive, then install the OS on the SSD drive only. Then plug in an external drive and use that for all your large files. Since it looks like the HDD is toast, quit trying to use it. The external will work fine until you decide to replace the failed drive.

I made an appointment to take my iMac to the Apple Store to get this issue fixed. Is it possible for them to return to me my defective HDD after they finished fixing my machine? I want it back for my own privacy. Even if it's failed or what not. Living in this day and age I am concerned more about my privacy then ever before.

Yes, just be sure to tell them that you want it back when you drop it off.

HI, I know this is an old post - but I have similar problems.

My Mac died 27 inch late 2014

days with Mac support couldn't reset fusion drive and it often says failure trying to write to the last block etc ... The fusion was split about a year ago - under Apple support guidance - following an email problem.

I have been able to load to High Sierra on the Mac - by booting from an external and loading OS that way,

My issue is that I can't get past High Sierra, it just won't take Mojave or Catalina

I have it booked in locally for a new SSD Drive to be installed - but don't want to do this if the problem is not with the drive

I have tried so many things from so many forums.

I can't restore from time machine back up - I have tried on to external drives that have booted up the Mac and also tried direct to the HDD in the Mac - after erasing it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

1. SSDs are not immortal, they do fail and dead.
2. You want to keep the iMac intact, while upgrading OS on the internal SSD/HDD, and try to do it yourself?
=> Back-up all your personal files, and try a clean install from a USB installer of High Sierra. (wipe out everything on the internal SSD, re-format it to APFS before installing)
Then after confirming everything is worked, download the upgrade package and install.

3. Others advice your to replace the internal SSD with a new, bigger one: There are many benefits to that. But you need to do some research (mainly watching guidance video online) before actually do it yourself.
Apart from the new SSD, you will need special tools and new adhesive to open the iMac.

4. If you are not comfortable with that, take the iMac to a local repair shop. The charge is mainly labour cost, which varies by geographic, the shop already has tools, and adhesive are cheap.
Clearly describe your request in advance may help
- Replace SSD
- Install new OS
- Copy personal files back to the new installed SSD/HDD
etc.

My personal advice: Don't try to salvage the internal 1TB fushion. Even if usable, on the 2nd parts market, they only worth about 20$ both.

OK Thanks,

So I have finally been able to boot the Mac using an external SSD Drive (I was able to load Catalina from Command R)

Everything was looking great - I loaded the welcome screen etc and started to do a transfer from time machine - it then just died - black screen and had the message again in all languages that the computer had to restart because of an error ... press a key.

I was able to see the Problem Details

these are listed below. Does this mean there are further problems with the MAC and not the internal drive ?

I am hoping to just run the Mac from the External SSD drive - which does seem quite quick ...

My guess: Internal HDD issues causing panic.
Thanks

I have done a lot of research and there appears to be an issue (mainly on laptops - but some iMacs) with the default settings in Energy Saver

SOLUTION to panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff80… - Apple Community

Something along these lines ...

anyway, I have now successfully restored from Time Machine and have been able to load Big Sur - it is working OK - but I do keep getting the Panic

I am fiddling with the energy saving settings which does help and when 'Turn Display Off' is set to Never - it does seem to help.

As I am using an external SSD for my start up is there a way of switching off the internal HDD ?

Thanks for your help.

but I do keep getting the Panic
My guess: Internal HDD issues causing panic.
It does look like the kernel panic is related to AHCI. Most likely caused by failed internal disk(s).

Don't chase your own tail on this.

Get is repaired, ie
- Replace HD with SSD (maybe 1TB SSD)

While the iMac is opened up, I would take the opportunity to also
- Upgrade blade SSD to higher capacity (maybe 512GB blade SSD)

A 2014 iMac is still worth keeping by spending money on these upgrades that would improve performance as well.

Change the HDD yourself, or buy an external USB 3.0 caddy, stick an SSD drive in it, and install the OS on that.

Hi, thanks for the advice ...

That is what I have - a 1TB SSD inside a USB Caddy - which starts up and runs the mac.

The internal HDD is erased and can be used for storage - although when I do a time machine back up it includes the HDD items in the back up.

If I keep getting problems I will use the info above to unmount the disk ...

Thanks all
