I do think Apple are working on it, even if it won't be ready yet. They have a tendency to put a feature in a one product, like Touch ID was in the iPhone 5S and then move it to others, like the iPad and now the new MacBook Pro's.

I do not think Apple will implement the touchbar in the IMac. The main attraction of the IMac is its large screen, everything revolves around it, and the introduction of a small screen oled on the keyboard is totally unnecessary. The desktop of the IMac is so large and broad that it's not necessary to move certain shortcuts or buttons to the magic keyboard, also shortening battery life.

Rather, I think that the touchbar is a long way that Apple has started and that will end in a hybrid between IPad Pro and MacBook, becoming a unique product. If we consider the current abandonment to the desktop Macs, we could also think that Apple is directing all their research and development towards that hybrid and not to the classic computers.

So I don't expect a great update of the IMac which is different from a typical update of cpu, gpu, storage and ram (soldered to the motherboard of course).

How much will it cost? NOTHING, because I fear there will not be one in existence.

Yes, I am being THAT pessimistic when it comes to Apple's Macintosh offerings.

I don't think they will do a hybrid, Apple executives have already said it's not a great user experience. Graig even spoke about it in an interview after the new MacBook Pro announcements. He said Apple had working models, but that the touch screen Mac experience isn't good, so I don't expect them to do a hybrid/touchscreen Mac.

Personally I don't think they should do it, maybe they would do it a lot better than Microsoft has, so it's possible, but I don't think they should.

They will update them, it's just a matter of what updates. Big update or just a processor and graphics update, which will probably openly be given a press release rather than an announcement at an Apple event.

If you remember the announcement titled "iPad Pro - What's a computer?", This ends as follows: "You think you know what a computer is, but then you see this one. Meet iPad Pro. ".

It's a fact that Apple considers the IPad Pro as a real computer. At apple.com, they define it: Super Computer, an uncompromising vision of personal computing for the modern world.

It's true, they have said that the Macbook "touch" doesn't work, but neither have said how MacOS runs the IPad Pro. Their bet for the IPad Pro is very strong, since they could have named it IPad air 3 and sold it from the beginning with 9 '7 inches.

Yea it's a computer replacement for most people, people who do everyday taks like checking email, social media and so on, but they also produce the MacBook Pro and other computers for people who prefer them but also need more power. I own an iPad Pro and it's a great device, but I also own an iMac that I use for MacOS which is great for desktop tasks.

IOS is on the iPad Pro not MacOS and I don't think they will put it on there, I think they will add more features that will bring it inline with a computer OS, there are rumours they will add things like being able to annotate anywhere on the screen and so on (a feature similar to what Samsung have done on the Note phone).

Interesting thoughts in this thread. My own:

1) iMac is far too popular to not have an update in Q1, 2017 (after 13+ months without one)
2) If other product updates are any guide, then there will likely be NO price update (prices will mirror current)

This is my hope! And I'm bias. Because I just bought a 27" 5K iMac on Saturday and am 99.99% sure I will be returning it in early January so as to be ready for the new 2017 iMac. I feel pretty stupid I bought one when the new ones are right around the corner!

iMac will not be announce in early 2017 which will create and group of upset american. Donald trump will step in and give Apple tax breaks to make america great again.

The result will be an iMac with no specs change and a price increase.

yeah.

Seeing what they did with the price point on the MBPs, I will be really surprised if the 27" starts below 2k.

Do you need a 2017 model though, OP? You might want to pick up a 2015 5k instead especially if third party sellers have sales (Best Buy, B&H Photo etc.)

The upwards trend is certainly there. Apple has become so good at extracting money from their customers, I think they are addicted to it by now. Just look at the new wireless ear pods, selling for $159, which is more than the cost of the original Sony Walkman including headphones. As long as people pay that kind of money for shiny new gadgets that are as cool as they are unnecessary, how could we blame Apple?

In contrast, though, hasn't each subsequent update to the iPad/iPhone lineup been in line with the previous price? I feel like every time they run through all the hardware/software updates, and then talk price, they say something like, "You get all these great new updates, for the same price as the previous model." And then the crowd cheers.

For the most part, yes, that has been the case. My point is: I am beginning to think that that is changing. the new MBP models are a good example. Expensive accessories that an ever larger percentage of users will consider essential are another example. Maybe they'll keep an entry-level 21" model at the current price, but I fully expect to see higher price points for many of the new iMacs.

But what do I know - let's come back here and compare notes when the new iPad is announced, whenever that will be.

If folks want to pay that, that is their choice. Buying older models in any Apple tech is my mantra going forward. With the exception of software stupidity, I've been very happy paying $1600 each for my last two iMacs including this 27" model.

Obligatorily 2017’s basic model will include at least 512 GB SSD, and probably RAM will not be upgradeable, starting from 16GB maybe?. All that would imply an increase with respect to the IMac late 2015 of between 500-1000€, according to the configuration chosen in these two aspects.

I don’t think it includes touchbar or touch Id, mainly for a security issue, I don’t see the implement of this technology in a peripheral keyboard. But let’s imagine that they include it, then we would have to add about 500€ more.

So we are talking about a computer that could be 1500€ more expensive than the current one and with very similar performance.

I suspect Apple will include the Fusion HD as the base HD. Probably will use the 2x faster SSD used on the new MacBook Pro with a 2TB SSD option. The Fusion HD will also use the 2x faster SSD. There will probably be a modest price increase of maybe $100. Might even see a redisigned wired keyboard. Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C ports.

To be honest, i want Apple to give me a reason to upgrade from my 2012 iMac, the 5K screen seems worth it, but i still think they are working on Touch ID for the iMac which is what i would love to see.

I really wish they would have updated the iMac when they did the mbp because I want to buy one but I don't want to wait until march or summer. I mean the current model is alright but knowing the new model will go usb-c / tb3 and be able to power 1 or 2 5k displays would be nice. Plus the possibility of a keyboard with Touch ID would be great as well.

Recent upgrades on everything else have certainly had robust price increases, so I'd look for something across the line, maybe $3-500.

They'll probably keep some little sad upgrade for around a grand (for the entry level sucker), but you'd be well advised to avoid it.

With, or without screen? With or without power supply? Do you use USB-A, ethernet, sd card, keyboard, mouse/trackpad?

It all depends on how many dongles you will need.

At this point, you should budget more for dongles than the actual Apple product you are buying.

Apple is primarily a dongle company now.
