I'm may be skeptical about how the iPad compares to netbooks, but it's miles ahead of rival slates.

Check out how clunky the Windows 7 touch operations are on the ASUS Eee PC T91MT.

I'm amazed he got through the demo without taking a hammer to it!
 
I only watched the first few minutes and then jumped around but that think looked awful. I've seen faster response from dead people. :eek:

Excellent example. Essentially I saw the same thing looking at the Archos 9 videos.

Aside from the performance issues. Windows just isn't well suited to touch, it is a tacked on afterthought.

I might buy a tablet (iPad/Android) or a windows laptop, but I would never buy a Windows 7 tablet. It is just a terrible fit.

I think these videos show why the iPad is running the iPhone OS instead of full blown OS X. Trying to use a desktop operating system that is designed to driven by a mouse and keyboard with a touchscreen just doesn't work well. If someone could come up with an elegant shell that could be toggled on when in touchscreen mode with finger sized buttons and navigation that could switch to desktop mode when the keyboard and a mouse were used, they might be onto something.
 
Oh sweet baby Jesus and the orphans, that is terrible!

I liked how the guy kept saying how it worked quite well when it clearly didn't.

I'd have to make some modifications to that slate with a fifteen pound mallet after about five minutes of using it.

It is a great example of how not to do it and why a full blown o/s is not necessarily the way forward for these types of device.
 
This is what will happen over and over again until someone pulls the plug on putting a desktop OS on a netbook spec'd tablets. Atom + Desktop OS = poor user experience. Just because you can... doesn't mean you should.

Might have been a better demo if the guy was using the stylus.
 
this tablet is great for dave1812dave and samcraig. They're both going to be so happy to see this. :D
 
But Flash works on the ASUS! All you poor sucker Apple fanboys would have completely missed those two big advertisements on digg.com trying to browse like this on an iPad!
 
Wow. Watching him change orientation was painful. Watching him try to scroll through pages using the scroll bar, until he awkwardly tapped whatever button turned on the flick scrolling mode was frustrating. The strange hand positions he had to use to close tabs illustrated why you don't use desktop software on 9" touchscreen devices.

Hey, at least this will give the people who hate the iPhone OS on a tablet something to buy and ****, right?
 
Can someone put OS X on this think so the people who wanted a full OS iPad can shut up.
 
I thought some of your might be exaggerating....but you were not. It really is terrible. Maybe it would have been a bit easier if he used a stylus.
 
What a complete pile of junk. It just shows how far ahead Apple is in the touch UI game. My God, the rest of this industry is so painfully unimaginative and derivative.

It's all fun and good to bash MS for no good reason, but keep in mind that the response is likely due to a poorly written browser plugin he was using rather than any underlying deficiency in the OS.

Nevertheless, it is a good example of how a traditional keyboard + mouse OS interface does not always translate well to the touch interface.

Lastly, all the iPad detractors may want to take note that this thing has everything they were wanting in a tablet. Multitasking, flash, USB ports, stylus etc. So stop complaining about the iPad and go get yourself one of these it's exactly what you all have been clamoring for! :)

The sad thing, is that this has been the "acceptable" tablet experience from MS for a long time now.

This is exactly why I gave up on MS based tablet PC's and UMPC's. Slow and kludgy interfaces kill the value of the tablet platform.

The ONLY saving grace of MS tablet platform in OneNote, but this isn't worth in IMHO
 
If this is what Apple is competing against, they have nothing to worry about.

You need a specific plugin for the chosen browser just to get basic touch functionality? FAIL

Really unresponsive scroll and zoom? FAIL

Need a small child available to close tabs on the browser? FAIL

I gave up after about 2 minutes.

Pretty much common sense. To those who want an OS X tablet, you'll be waiting quite some time. It's a desktop OS, forget it. The use of the iPhone OS tweaked was a brilliant move.

Google will follow with Android tablets while Microsoft will follow later with WinMo 7 for tablets. Then we'll have a battle unless the iPad turns into another iPod.
