i think some folks don't want that

Then let some other tech outfit make a better slate.

When Apple works their magic with handheld devices and the rest of the industry stands around in awe, slack-jawed, you're going to get into a situation where Apple gets all the praise and attention.

It isn't Apple's fault their competitors are so monumentally incompetent.

Multi-Tasking

Woah, that surely IS horrible! Yet, I love how most people complain about multitasking on the iPad. I agree, it can be considered a downfall, although how much can you REALLY want to do? If I am checking my email on a screen at that size, I don't want to have a million tabs open in safari, etc. I feel that people are just nitpicking things that can be interpreted as a downfall, although we saw what happens when they make multi-tasking available. Hahah.

LOL @ my wife after showing her this video:

"Yeah so I don't think I want a netbook anymore. Can I get one of those iPad things too?"

Haha yeah, I'll give her my iPad next year, when v2 comes out! Until then she can keep using her iPhone / work laptop at home. But my thinking is this: she won't let me upgrade to v2 unless she gets something out of it. Plus she can use the iPad when I'm not in class or already doing something on it. I plan to dock it on our coffee table anyway. Though I did manage to bring her Dell back to life by rebuilding the registry hive. Yes, that is as scary as it sounds. Yes, almost all programs are broken and it has no security software. No, its not going online any time soon. Yes, the fans scream like a banshee. Yes, the computer is almost three years old and falling apart with 15min battery life. No more PC's for her. Within a year I'm hoping for a PC-free home.

Haha yeah but the beautiful thing about the iPad is that you can have 9 tabs open and it doesn't break a sweat. It isn't bogged down with buggy plugins. Everything is pure, optimized Apple code that is designed to run on only that hardware. For 10 hours. Nothing else compares when you look at it like that.

As a side note / general RANT: I've never gone into a netbook forum and made fun of someone's netbook because it is missing x feature or y feature or isn't as fast or the battery doesn't last as long as z product. So why do so many people who hate the iPad come in here anyway? Are they jealous that they don't have an extra $500 to drop since they wasted all their money on the netbook and it's virus software? For real. What other possible reason can there be for all the hate? I used to love my PSP back in 2005 when it first came out and it was revolutionary. But I never went onto DS sites when the DS came out and made fun of them for not having a browser or better 3d graphics, etc. Likewise I never go to WindowsRumors.com or whatever and scream at people. Some people are crazy. Buy whatever suits you and leave the people that are happy about their iPad alone. Damn. I hope people don't bother me when I get my iPad. All my friends and half the kids I have in my graphic design classes made fun of me when I bought an iPhone and now they all own one. History seems to be repeating itself. I see an iPad in most every home in 10 years. Most people aren't geeks, but even a device like this is a nice complement to the tools that a geek uses in their daily life. The thing isn't a workstation. People will finally get this after its been on the market for a few months. I see sales REALLY taking off for Christmas 2011 as people are replacing their bogged down netbooks.

Sorry I just had to get that out of my system! Let us continue now...

I hate PCs. The HP laptop I bought 2 years ago, before I could afford to get my iMac or MacBook Pro, now lasts 30 seconds when not plugged in, and I never even used it that much!

Once again, very, very, very true.

They do seem rather uncharacteristically quiet on this topic...

It is interesting how nobody is prepared to defend the Asus!

A consistently responsive interface is something that Apple gets right and almost everyone else seems to ignore.

Right, this has everything people are complaining about the iPad (flash, multitasking, camera, usb ports, etc) but then no one is defending it, because the user experience in tablet mode is horrible.

They both went out and bought one of these ASUS tablets this morning but have not been able to get a tap on the Post Reply button to register yet.

The user experience is absolutely the most important point. Personally I'd like some of the "pro" features but I'm not prepared to sacrifice usability. For me the iPad wins by a landslide.

Now that's funny! Best laugh I've had all week. Thanx admanimal!

Trying to use a desktop operating system that is designed to driven by a mouse and keyboard with a touchscreen just doesn't work well.
That's the key thing, I think. It's the outer layer that's the problem here, rather than the underlying OS. Since IPhone OS is a cut-down version of the full OSX, I wonder how hard it would be to put that shell on top of the real thing.

Incidentally, I wouldn't say that this video is a good argument to use against netbooks in general. They have a keyboard & touchpad to do all the things the guy was struggling with here. It's just an example of how not to do a slate.

Wow. I can't believe the bashing on the Asus in this thread.

Its a video of a beta browser running a beta plugin. It really doesn't tell me anything about how the netbook performs. I don't think many of you even watched the video.

One of the issues with tablets of 10 years ago was poor battery technology and short battery charge duration. Apps developed for them were fine, but they had to be plugged in to charge every other hour.

Apple is on the right track with a 10 hour estimate. Work the ipad all day then let it charge overnight. Should keep the masses happy. Batteries have improved for everyone though, so the reason we are seeing so many tablets is that they make more sense with longer charge duration. The OS certainly makes a difference. So does the UI (which can vary within a given OS). I suspect, just like iPhone apps are getting re-written for the iPad, that we'll also see popular Windows apps start coming with a tablet mode. Many apps support skins, and a tablet optimized skin may be all that is needed. The Android devs just have to deal with larger screen resolutions. We already have 800 x 480 Android phones. I expect to see a 1024 x 600 Android device before Fall.

The grand effect? Competition is good.

Yes, the original video does show Chrome with an extension. However I've watched a few videos of both the Asus and the Archos 9 and they all seem to be full of jerky scrolling and unrecognised touches.

The fact that guy in the video had to use an extension also brings up another point. Applications shouldn't have to be dealing with things like touch scrolling, it should be a service that the OS provides.

Could you please provide a link to a video of the Asus performing properly?

Heck, provide a link to a video of "ANY" windows tablet being less than frustrating. I have seen a lot of Archos 9 Videos, using Firefox, IE and it is just as bad. This video is from the ultimate Archos fan at CES. I chuckled when he showed the Kindle software. It looked like notepad from ten years ago, and he couldn't figure out how to put it in portrait mode.

Windows + touch = frustration. That applies even if you have good hardware.

Windows + touch + netbook HW= Kill it with fire (or a handy Mallet).

I think that is a pretty safe bet since working prototypes were being showed at CES:

Even in prototype form I think these were already better than windows tablets. Though still a fair bit clunkier than iPad.

For me it is Ipad or an Android Tablet. I don't have a Mac, I have a windows PC, but Windows on Tablet it is just out of the question for me.

I can understand to an extent. A couple of years ago when I was wanting to buy a new mac-mini (I love OSX), and waiting and waiting for something worth upgrading to, at a decent price point, I was very frustrated. So I expressed my frustration a bit. But only to an extent, for a little while.

Some people have way too much time on their hands. Me too, because I didn't really get a lot of information off of these forums I couldn't have gotten more efficiently elsewhere. But it's fun to read people's opinions. And I want one now! :)

Have fun with yer iPad :)

It definitely has more promise than the ASUS, but let's see how their software actually ends up in reality before declaring it an iPad killer. At this point it's just a prototype at best; they didn't even have a working unit for the public to demo at the Mobile World Conference last week.

Come iPad release - there will start to be comparisons made to what is in the market for alternatives.

Until Windows comes out with a new version, it's apples and oranges for having Win 7 on a tablet. Android will likely show up earlier and be a better comparison.

Is there a decent pony for non-iPad likers to back? It's a problem for haters. They can want their USB, cam, moon on a stick right now, but they don't have many in the market alternatives.
And then the other issue is - when there are alternatives, it'll be like the problem iPhone killers have - there will be another iPad killer, that instead of killing the iPad, just succeeds, and makes obsolete, the previous alternative.
E.g. see the Droid, Nexus One, Legend, Desire.
Once the rivals get the hardware, they're still stuffed until they sort their software. And then by then, I'd imagine there will be a rather nice line up of iPad specific apps and the book, video, music purchasing systems will be kicking in. And that's a hell of a positive for the iPad.

When it becomes "real" and not a prototype I'll be glad to take a look. Prototypes are a dime a dozen, they can promise whatever they want because it's not real, it's simply a working concept of idea's. It may never see the light of day. Crunchpad anyone... err I mean Joo Joo anyone? :)
