I try to use my phone to the maximum potential that is until there is problem that I think can cause bad experience. No point of upgrading to 800$ device for only one or two features. Looks plain stupid to me, even though I had the money to do it, I wouldn't.

I change my phone when the current one is no longer fit for (my) purpose.

So that could be 1, 5, 3 months, years or days…

What never drives me is an infantile need to have the latest and greatest… just because "I wanna! I wanna!" or a corporation's marketing makes me desire something that would not necessarily make much difference to my life.

It’s goes to show then reviewing this poll more people are keeping phones longer and the need for annual upgrades is less than it used to be.

Sometimes I think anecdotally it’s always the younger demographic that has to have latest smart phone right away, where as more of an older demographic tends to not care as much about having latest device, simply because they view it as a ‘phone’ and not a ‘fad.’

For the record about myself, I’m only 33 and I couldn’t care less about having the latest smart phone every year, even though I tend to upgrade. But I think when you have a younger crowd in there earlier 20s perhaps, it’s all about having the latest iPhone as quickly as possible sometimes.

The demographic may be different depending on where you are but I’ve always felt the target market for new devices is mid twenties to late thirties due to people being young and in career mode by this point. I’m only 36 and most people I know my age have iPhones but mostly older models. My niece had her 21st birthday party last weekend and just observing her friends all glued to their iPhones and posing in their party outfits for Instagram, I noticed most were using iPhones 6’s and likely due to them being handed down. I didn’t notice an X for instance.

I don’t get the impression the buzz for new phones is quite what it was a few years ago due to devices getting pretty much on par with each other.

36 as well and completely agree with you there. If my existing phone is functioning well then I just don’t care much.
