"Perhaps."

For the purposes of running p2p software, is a computer basically off if it is in sleep mode?

i know this seems like a very stupid question, but was just wondering- thanks.

I sleep my computer Monday thru Friday. On friday night I usually Shut down, and don't turn it on untill Saturday Afternoon after 4pm.

Now i will do this every week, but mostly every 2 weeks. So in other words, i put my computer to sleep everynight, and every 2 weeks i shut down my computer on friday around 9pm and don't turn it on until Saturday after 4pm.:D

I feel my computer runs better when i sleep it because everything is loaded and stuff. And when i shut down after 2 weeks, and turn it on, it's like new again ;)

I wouldn't shut down everynight though. I think that's unessesary. Also the manual says to sleep it, unless you are being away from your computer for days. In which friday nights is really the only time i leave my computer off for a longer time than usual.. Now during the week if i know i'm not going to be on the computer for days, i shut down. Either way computer runs GREAT and fast!

Im just curious as to how often everyone completely turns off their computer. I just bought a 24" iMac and have been turning it off every night. Should I just leave it on and let it go to sleep? Or continue what i'm doing. Thanks..

I turn mine off whenever I leave the house for more than 24-hours. Otherwise, I have it set to sleep if I don't do anything for 2 hours.

Here's the way it works:

You can kill your computer one of two ways (you get to choose):

1) By Use

2) By Stress

Argument against leaving it on: Every electronic device and component has a given number of hours that it can survive being operated / powered.

Argument against turning it off: When you shut down an electronic device, it cools and essentially "rests". Then, when you turn it on, it is immediately jolted and stressed by the sudden surge of electricity that hits it as it powers-up and begins to adjust to being operated.

So, you can kill it by turning it on or off too many times, or you can kill it by having it on too long. You get to choose which method you want to use to kill your computer.

In practice, if you turn something on or off enough times, you will kill it before you reach it's maximum usage life.

Exceptions to that rule would be devices which are used less frequently.

I find sleeping the computer after a few hours to be a fair compromise. Otherwise, turn it off if you won't use it for more than 24-hours at a time.

Now, if you only use your computer 15 to 30 minutes a day, then you might turn it off when you're done.

But, if you use it 3 or 4 times a day averaging say 3 hours apart, then leave it on (but let it sleep if you want to consume less power).

In the end, it comes down to picking which method you want to use to kill your computer. Pick the one you like best. It will die eventually. Pick wisely :D

I always put my powerbook to sleep just by closing the lid. The rare times I restart is when there is a system update that asks me to do so and even then I do not always do it at once.

when i had an iBook / MacBook Pro i turned the off every night, as the sleep light was really annoying.

now i have an iMac (which doesnt have a sleep light) i sleep it most nights; i only really turn it off when i'm switching to Wi***ws

Uptime on the mini says 15d. Don't turn it off. Reboot to boot for a different target now and again (must have been 15 days ago :p )

Just runs in the background attached to the TV.

i leave mines on during the day while im out and i shut it down at night, i love some of the cool features that apples added though. Such as holding the play button on the remote for a few seconds puts it to sleep :D

My MacMini stays on all the time (apart from an automated shutdown and power up once a week so 5 minutes of being off). It's a webserver so it need to stay on. It replaced a HP PC which had a PSU rated at 300w. So i'm saving 200watts (or so) now.

Whenever Im away for a few hours it stays on, more than that then its in Sleep and I used to sleep it overnight but since I discovered iAlarm it stays on all night (also useful if d/l)

I never turn mine off except when I leave for a few days. Except last night it went to sleep and never woke up!!!! Right now it is at the Apple store and I have no idea what is wrong with it. It won't power up at all, I am hoping it is only the power cord! I am keeping my fingers crossed!

I usually let my MBP sleep, unless I won't be using it for more than a day. I restart after updates.

While we're at it (and slightly OT) -- is there a way to reduce the size of the VM without restarting? I use matlab now and then, and it leaves the system with a rather large VM (12-14G on a 2G machine), even though there's about 1-1.5G free memory available.

Only sleep. in fact the only time i've turned it off is when i wanted to upgrade the RAM.

Almost never. I do put it to sleep some nights (when I'm not downloading something), and I have a two-minute timer to shut down the screen.
