I had a similar experience with Big Sur not working out well. I have skipped previous releases in the past too And can say it's a good strategy. If you value stability, waiting many months before upgrading is a good idea. Always Time Machine backup if it turns out to not work out for you.

plan to stay with Mojave since last os that supported 32bit programs. I see nothing but pain with newer versions. Use a virtual machine for the one program I use that requires a newer os.

what 32bit apps do you need, that aren't either now available as 64bit apps, or have current alternatives? and what does this mean: I see nothing but pain with newer versions"??? you realize there's a whole world of macusers who've been running 64bit apps exclusively for years?

if you want to stay on an 'ancient' OS, that's your prerogative. but, at some point, you may need a newer mac, and that will come with a new OS, and you'll have to move forward (or you can buy an older mac on ebay and continue to resist the present-day world)... 🤔

I also use VM for an app that is old and that has a lot of data. I am lazy to convert to an alternate app.
However, I am satisfied with OS12. So I will keep my MBA for a longer time.
