Honestly, I feel you on this. I have been using iPad OS for a while now, and the whole 'files' part of it caused my mental pain!

Good luck with everything...
Thanks, circatee. Nearly at the end of my tether, though. I'm just about to do what my cat does when it doesn't like something, and saunter away without looking back.😉

Haha, yeah, I probably should persevere, erihp, but I've been agonising over this contraption for three days straight now. Beginning to think they deliberately make these things absurdly complicated, just because they can.

I'll try you suggestion, though, because I'm nothing if not persistent. But if this doesn't work, the neighbours are going to hear a strange crashing, smashing, tinkling noise coming from my house.

Cheers.

EDIT: Well, surprise surprise!! My Mac doesn't have Airdrop. It's a 10.9.5. That's it, then.

Cheers, from another grandpa. 🙂
get it together gramps!!

next easiest method: upload your files to icloud from the pc, and then download on phone.

And THIS is what I have done over the years. Alas, I feel there should be an easier and obvious solution. This is why I often feel as if I am totally missing something simply...

Just use iCloud for Windows like I wrote. Some other people recommended it too.

What Mac is it? Have you ever updated it by downloading a newer version from the AppStore? I can't remember there was even any Mac, where 10.9.x or 10.10.x was the last supported version... 🤔

It was mostly either 10.7.5, some 10.11.6 and many 10.13.6.

Macs that originally came with a 10.9.x version support macOS 11 ant the ones that came with 10.8.x support up to 10.15.7

If you missed to "buy" new versions of OS X/macOS in the AppStore for free, there are also direct links to installers. And it's also possible to install newer versions on unsupported Macs as last resort.

Look here, what latest version your Mac is supporting:

I would try to ask in the OS X Mavericks (10.9) section. The users with old macs might not bother reading posts here, assuming most concerns the Apple Silicon macs.

Another option I would consider is using macOS Server on the mac with Mavericks. Or would that not work either?

He should be able to update to a newer version. I can give him download links. It can't be done with the AppStore anymore if he missed the "purchase".

I think Mavericks is only used for nostalgic reasons by the people over their because of the design change, what I hated too back then.

If his iPad has the latest iOS version he should update his Mac too. To make things easier. It may at least support syncing to newer iOS versions. But the Bluetooth version might be too old for things like AirDrop... But it's no problem to look that up.

10.9.5 Mavericks does not support iCloud Drive (though even Apple doesn't seem so sure whether you need 10.10 Yosemite or 10.11 El Capitan as a minimum requirement).

I'm not sure if...
The iPad is a 9th 17.6.1.
...iPadOS 17's Files app supports "legacy" iCloud Documents and Data instead of the newer iCloud Drive? I'm not sure, since the migration happened long ago for me - but I doubt it.

In any case, I believe iCloud is not a good idea - unless the Mac's operating system is upgraded to a more recent Mac OS X version that supports iCloud Drive.

High Sierra and all later versions can still be downloaded from the AppStore even if not "purchased". You will see if your Mac supports it, if not you can't download it.

For older versions down to 10.7 there are direct downloads available on that website. I there was any Mac where Mavericks is the last supported version they wouldn't have left it out.

Your Mac should at least support El Capitan or High Sierra if not even Catalina or Big Sur.

If I remember correctly some of the new installers can't be run on older versions and you need two steps, but I think that was before Mavericks.

Thank you, everybody. I won't address each of the last 6 posts, since they're all pretty much on point. I can just say that I'm not really keen on upgrading my old Mac, just so that my new iPad will play nice with it. It's just not worth the hassles, merely to be able to save videos on the iPad.

This is the thing; over the years I've used IDM to download heaps of instructional videos from Youtube, and saved then on an external drive. When I want to watch one, like for instance for my film-making hobby, I just plug in the drive and watch the videos on another comp at my leisure, with no internet connection. That is what I had been hoping to be able to do, with the iPad.

But with all the fiddling around and the downloading and upgrading etc etc ad infinitum, it just seems like too much trouble, (and risk, tbh). Every interaction on the net is fraught with risk, and I can do without that. I did think about upgrading the Mac to Big Sur, which I read is the only available uograde for a 10.9.5 machine, but I couldn't find a download anywhere. But also I thought of the risks of my existing software being unusable if I did upgrade. That's always a possibility, I read.

What I'll do is just use the iPad to watch the Youtube vids online, without downloading them.

Thanks again, everyone, for your generous and helpful input. It's much appreciated.

Cheers.

Bir Sur is only working on your Mac when the first time it had been sold, it came with 10.9.x. But you can also install every version in between.

Here are all the links:

If you don't find any of the later versions in the App Store you maybe have to download and update to the last version of those DMG-file-downloads, what would be 10.12.

After that something changed in the AppStore. Before you needed to have every new version in your purchases to install them because Apple deleted older versions from the AppStore. Maybe that's the cause you don't find them because the AppStore needs an update.

You can also download the full installer of Big Sur 11.7.10 from here. Your Mac will prevent you from launching it, if it is not compatible:

There are also similar links for other macOS version available. If I would know what kind of Mac it is and what year (including early, mid or late). I would know what is the last compatible version.

Just click on the Apple in the upper left corner and then "About this Mac".

Thanks, Adora. I think I'll just leave well enough alone for now. I only got the iPad as an extra device to watch my downloaded videos after hours, instead of firing up the computer in the living room. Lazy, I know. For going online I'm using this little Asus laptop, which I see as a sacrificial device, if you know what I mean. I'm extremely wary of the Internet. Always have been. These machines cost us enough, I'd hate to brick them just because I was idly wanting to do something that I can already do anyway.

Cheers, my friend. 🙂

Father time, PLEASE backup this external drive with all your videos! This is your next step before doing anything else, including playing them again!

Haha!! I've done that, some time ago. And I do it every time I add another video. One thing I've got plenty of is external hard drives. Got about six now. Biggest is 1T, but the others are a bit smaller. So, no worries about that. I resist the temptation to get one of these 5Tb drives. I'd put everything on it and then lose it all when it went to heaven.. Better to spread the load.

But thanks for the tip. :)

EDIT: Still, the 5Tb drives are getting pretty cheap now. Hmmm...

…although so is the choice not to upgrade. Especially if the computer and its bundled internet browser are used for internet access.

The real risk is still using a version of Mac OS X from… checks notes… 11 years ago.

That really isn't good. He should a least find a browser with a recent or extended release version, what might not exist.

Just looked if it supports Firefox 115 ESR, what gets at least updates until November this year, the new ESR is already there with 128. But it's only Version 78 for OS X 10.9 to 10.11, what got it's last security Update in October 2021.

@Roomuz

You should really have a look into the Mavericks section here, if you don't want to update.

... since I bought my first Atari in 1980, back when I wasn't quite so senior, (I got the steam-powered model with the brass mouse and ivory keyboard).
...
Why do some here raise flags on his internet use?
He got his first Atari back in 1980. If he ran into any problems on the internet during all these years, he found a way to deal with it. Right?
Even if the OS is old, I would not automatically assume that is dangerous. Visiting websites one has known for a long time is safer than jumping all over the internet.

I got my first PC in late 1997, and I was only 13 years old when he had his Atari 🤣

You got it, Regulus. :)

Applied Micro, Lounge Vibes, Adora, I know what you're saying and I appreciate your help. But I should have mentioned that I never had any intention of upgrading my browser on that Mac. I only considered upgrading the OS (and thus the browser), because I read that I'd need it to get this troublesom iPad set up properly.

But I've given up on that. I'll just use the iPad as is, and watch all those tutorial videos directly on Youtube using the Safari that came with the iPad.

I also don't care about security updates for myself because I know what I do and people here don't like that.

My first PC was a 6MHz intel 186 when I was a kid. It had MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 wasn't even compatible.
It was already outdated then but I used it some years. My dad gave it to me after he got a 386 with 33MHz.

I just thought about a MacBook with the latest version of OS X 10.7 on it that already 7-8 years or so ago couldn't open some important websites with the newest browser I found for it and Safari had been almost unusable. 10.11 or 10.12 had been the recent version in that time.

It might be better. Maybe some of the software you use isn't even compatible to a newer macOS version. And going back is always a hassle.

You said you connected the drive directly with an adapter to the iPad and it had not been recognized. Maybe it just did not get enough power from the lightning port. I have a Lightning to Ethernet Adapter that also has a second lightning port for charging at at the same time.

I have a lightning to USB adapter too, but never used it and could try what happens. I have some old HDDs and SSDs lying around.

Do you know the file system of your external drive? But I think that's unimportant for just reading if it isn't anything special like a Linux-EXT-FS.

Yes, that's very likely true. I've had the same version of all those programs since I first got them., (with some minor updates). It's very possible that a new OS could cause something in them to spit the dummy.

I should have said, the drive was recognised, but it had the wrong name. Well, that is, I thought it was the wrong name, but i found out later that it wasn't. I know all my SSDs have insufficient power to work, but this was a powered one. Big Seagate brute of a thing.

I'm going to nab my nephew and pick his brain about iPads. He's a whizkid with them. In person, I'll ask a lot of annoying questions one after the other, and he'll have to tell me where I'm going wrong, hehe..

Cheers.
