"Sadly, Apple doesn't have a chatbot service similar to ChatGPT, and there's no indication that the company will launch one soon, so macOS integration is likely some ways off."

Thank God the almighty!

I thoroughly enjoy my “Smarter Siri” which uses a Siri shortcut to create a voice ChatGPT replacement for Siri.

ChatGPT/AI is the new crypto, only this time it's going to be a game changer, eventually. It's still basically in beta, so goofy behavior, mistakes, etc are expected, but imagine having a conversation with the smartest person on earth about literally anything.

Not useful or interesting? Perhaps to some, but we know that there's always that person that doesn't like ice cream, pizza, or puppies, so it's what it's.

This ChatGPT thing has taken the world by storm, and we all know how slowly that Apple moves.

Siri is built on the exactly the same machine-learning technology, but has restrictions in place on its domain, rightfully so. Apple will continue to be very conservative with this until the wrinkles are ironed out by the competition.
Yep, Siri can't be wrong if it fails to provide a sensible answer. Apple in a nutshell.

I believe the "chat" aspect of chat GPT will be a passing fad. My interest in this technology has waned quickly. I have realized that I want an emotionally aware response, thus need to speak with humans.
I totally agree with you. In interactive information exchanges where communicators need to negotiate, empathize, revise, advise, comiserate, motivate … I would only want to engage with participants who are capable of “emotionally aware responses”.

Do you know any people?
What I mean is, people can't make up coherent "facts" out of the blue, and say them with conviction that they know what they are saying. Well, maybe you do if you are George Santos. But no, I've never personally interacted with someone who behaved like that.

Not really, it makes mistakes that people wouldn't make. For instance, I asked it to name the chapters of a Classical Japanese book. A person who was asked that question would list the chapter names they know, then the ones they are unsure of with a comment that they are unsure, then admit they don't know the rest. ChatGPT very confidently listed the chapter names, some of which were correct, and others totally made up. People just don't do that kind of thing. They know what they know and what they don't know, and they know it's good practice to admit what they don't know.

ChatGPT doesn't "know" anything. It's basically a more complicated version of autocomplete, just stringing together words that are statistically likely to follow each other. It's impressive that it's able to form coherent and grammatical sentences in this way. But there is no guarantee what it says is accurate. The problem is because its output is coherent and grammatical, people assume the content is factual. Which it sometimes is and sometimes isn't. And there's no easy way to tell when something it tells you is inaccurate.
Well said!

I’m not scared, it’s just boring after a while.

What I definitely notice compared to chatbots of the past is that you need to spend more time with it until you realize “yeah, I’m definitely talking to a machine”. In the past you could tell pretty quickly, but it takes longer and longer as these models improve.
… and this improvement is scary to me.

You have a masters degree in MIS. You should be learning to embrace it rather than shun it.

AI is the future. Get on board now. It already is helping me to do my job for example.
It's not that I hate AI. Not shunning it down either. I'm just not a big fan of it. I don't find anything appealing about it and I don't think it's going to do anything to make this world a better place or enrich people's lives.

Just as social media may have ruined this world (especially when it comes to dating) AI will end up doing the same thing. People will not know how to interact or what human feelings are like.

I think it's fantastic - I wish Apple would scrap Siri and start again based on AI like this [...]

I think it's an incredible demonstration. That said, I'm not sure I'd give it control of my home automation system just yet...

Nevermind, just RTFM and found the answer to my question, "Log in with your OpenAI credentials".

The main thing keeping me from trying it is that OpenAI insists on having a phone number and I'm not going to give them one.

Don't install the app that the story mentions. It's not part of the OS so there's nothing to block. Eventually AI/machine learning will become more tightly integrated with search engines, so I don't know what your options will be once that happens - depends on how Google/MS/Duck/Brave/Yahoo/etc. deploy it. Maybe some search engines will use this tech and some won't, and you can determine for yourself what you want to use.
Yea, I get that. I was reading somewhere that there is an update to Win11 planned where this is built in, sure, we’re talking MS here, but all OSs are getting so over bloated. I haven’t turned my 2006 MacBook on in a while, last time around 2 or so years ago it got to the login prompt almost as fast as my then 15MBP 2019 base model i7 16GB RAM where as the MacBook had a Core, 2GB Ram and an 80GB platter drive…

I'm obsessed with ChatGPT. I can't believe Apple doesn't have something like it, ChatGPT makes Siri look like she has severe brain damage in comparison. Apple tried to get in on this kind of thing early with Wolfram Alpha integration in Siri but then kind of gave up.

There's a wide arc of truth to this.

I would rather have Siri tell me it doesn’t know the answer and provide a link then to just make up a fake one.

Apple, Google and others are now salty. Microsoft is getting ahead. I have moved to Edge with Bing on all of my Apple devices - the AI powered search engine works flawlessly and saves me tons of time. At the moment I find Edge superior to all other browsers. OpenAI's ChatGPT can be easily accessed from the browser as well. The current state of the art AI seems to be a revolution and a new revelation - this thing is really getting better. I also use MS Rewards program just to earn a few extra bucks while searching - it works well with Amazon.

We can ignore the AI, but we cannot stop it. It can be broken like as any other tool, but it's really good if used as intended.
