I changed this years ago on all my Macs so they get stored in a folder in Dropbox. I know there are stacks now to make it less cluttered, but saving anything to the desktop doesn't make sense, they should change the default.

Between capturing some idea, and having to document some online stuff via screenshots, every day, without fail, the last screenshots will not be at the bottom of the list of screenshots, because the OS insists on using the AM/PM date notation ... so everything for any given day is always out of order, scrambled between AM & PM ... despite using 24hr clock from the minute I have access to a new system.
Change the sort order for the folder to date modified, instead of file name?

They should add the ability to have screenshots named with 24-hour time, but the system has always had a way to view files in chronological order.

Hopefully some day in the not to distant future, Apple will make screenshots respect the 24 clock setting!

You can customize time formats in System Preferences -> Language & Region -> Advanced -> Times. The "Medium" field appears to be the relevant one here.

A Much Easier Method: Let DropBox, (Free) Handle your screenshots. Once Dropbox is installed on your Mac and you take your first Screenshot, DropBox will ask you if you would like “IT” to store them for you. And you then create a folder called Screenshots in Dropbox. How much easier is that, and no unweildy stacks on your desktop. Set It & Forget it!

More importantly though, is it possible to save screenshots immediately? I HATE when I take a screenshot and must wait for it to disappear from the bottom right and appear onto the desktop. Yes I know I can drag it but sometimes that ends up opening it by mistake due to double clicking the thumbnail on the bottom right. Can't you make it instant "like in the old days?"

In the same Command-Shift-5 Options pop up. Uncheck "Show Floating Thumbnail" -- but I still feel like it takes too long to appear.

I highly recommend dragging that screenshots folder to your dock to make a stack. Best productivity hack that I've done in a while.
Same. And since I have a couple of Macs, I put my Screenshots folder on iCloud Drive. I did the same with my downloads folder. (Also I'm determined to get my money's worth out of this 2TB iCloud quota...)

I used to use Dropbox, but the software kept getting more and more bloated and I finally ditched it when iCloud Drive folder sharing went live.

You can use the utility Onyx to do this without having to use the command line. You can also change the format it's saved in, if that's important to you.

Am I the only need who uses Automator for this?
  1. Folder action for Desktop
  2. Filter where any are true: Name begins with Screen Shot, and Name begins with Screen Recording
  3. Nice finder items to folder of your choice
Been using the same script since 10.4.

I do not see the Screenshots, Clipboard and Preview locations when I press Command-Shift-5 on my MacBook Air 2017 on Catalina 10.15.5. Any advice?

I would like to automatically convert screenshot color space to sRGB when taking it. Could this be possible using Automator script or something? For now screenshots are saved within the display’s color space.

command+control+shift 4 -> capture selection to clipboard.
press space while the crosshairs are visible toggles between capture window mode. this also works with capturing to folders. (cmd+shift+4)
capture window mode also grabs the contents from the non-visible regions of a window (i.e. not in foreground).

I have not actually SEEN my desktop in a long long time... maybe a year? But this is good to know.

Funny, that. :) I just looked. There's 604 screen shots on the desktop. No wonder that icon pile in the upper left has very dark borders around the text titles. ;-)

Can't get it to work on El Capitan. When you hit enter what is the response supposed to be? It just goes to a blank line. I did put the space after location before dragging the folder. DO I have to reboot for it to work?

nevermind. used Oynx instead.
