Why would I do such a horrible thing? Because it takes HOURS to verify a 40+ GB Steam game. This is absurdity in its highest form.

I've tried a number of tutorials that purport to disable Gatekeeper/Xprotect/whatever but none of them seem to work. Most involve using the command spctl from a root Terminal, but as far as I can tell the variations on this command I've tried accomplished nothing.

Any suggestions?

Well I found a solution, but it's a weird one. Apparently if you abort an app verification in progress, and then disable Gatekeeper, it will keep trying to verify the app anyway. The only way to stop the madness is to perform a 'safe boot', which seems to clean out a Gatekeeper cache somewhere, and *only then* will you be allowed to launch your app/game unmolested. Very bizarre; turning Gatekeeper off doesn't really turn it off until you purge its cache.

Disabling Gatekeeper permanently is not necessary.
You can remove the quarantine attribute (if you are sure the app is safe) and right-click & Open.

@bogdanw I have successfully used this approach in the past. However, since this particular app is a Steam game, it must be launched from Steam. Which means one cannot right click on the app in Finder to launch it.

I think disabling Gatekeeper/Xprotect/ is not the best idea, but it is up to you

Thanks
