How to import photos from SSD external to my iPad photos app

I’m really trying to make use of my iPad Pro 12.9 and not have it as a paperweight. I’ve just plugged in my wife’s external SSD to import some photos into my photos app and I can’t for the life of me figure out how to do it.

I don’t get the import option in either the app or files app, what am i doing wrong?

Photos will import from a camera card - but an “external SSD” sounds like just a random folder of pictures. For that, I’d open Files, “Select” the photos, then choose “Share > Save Images.” That will add them to the Photos library.
