Highlighted in red - took the screenshot on iBooks for iPhone (same on both iPad and iPhone on iOS 11.4). That document is a PDF. Tap on that and there’s an Airdrop menu. I have used it to send Documents between Macs and iOS devices and vice versa.
Looks like iBooks for iOS treats PDF and ePub differently then. Here's the share sheet for ePub.

Most ebooks are small (probably 1MB or less unless it has a lot of pictures) so they should be fine even with the free 5GB storage. This books syncing method works independently of iCloud backups.

Rui, my 10.5” iPad Pro shows 18gb storage for all my PDFs and ebooks. Are you saying that iCloud Syncing of iBooks will ignore storage amount and simply Sync all my iBook devices at once? That didn’t occur to me. Maybe I have confused storage and syncing?

Ah, in that case, iCloud syncing wouldn't work. Looks like your ebooks/PDF probably have plenty of images. You'd need more than 5GB of iCloud storage.

Just use iTunes/iBooks for Mac to transfer then. You don't really have much of a choice short of a paid iCloud account.

This is not an Apple ebook. There is no record of it in the cloud or at Apple transactions. I wanted to get it to the iMac. Must be through iTunes, or luckily be able to download from the web to the iMac.
Any book added to iBooks should automatically propagate to all devices signed in with the same AppleID. Source does not matter.

Unimportant self share:
I have several 100 'white-papers' in multiple formats saved to my iPad10.5. Some were downloaded with my phone, some were purchased from online, some were downloaded through my MBPr15, some were downloaded through my iMac27, some were downloaded through my Windows10 computer, some were downloaded through my iPadPro9.7, some were downloaded via email, some from a server, some were air dropped.

They all end up on all devices I want them to automatically. I just have to tap the cloud icon to actually 'download' them to each device from my personal cloud hosted by Apple: iCloud.

What do you mean "iCloud syncing" if I do not use iCloud backup, just the 5gb.

I see nothing in iBooks that allows sending an ebook.
Come on down to Destin FL, I'll give you a five minute class and buy you a favorite beverage.

So you rent storage space from Apple?

You are sending a pdf. I want to send a non-apple ebook from ios11.4.

I know, I initially presumed it was possible as it’s possible to send non Apple eBook files TO an iPad from a Mac via airdrop, I presumed it was possible to send them back/to other devices - as it turns out you can’t, you can only send PDF from iOS 11.4, very odd/conflicting.

My dual Workflow -
ePub - Download on Mac, airdrop to iPad, consume in iBooks, delete off iPad.
PDF - Download documents on iPad, read in iBooks and send to Mac, delete off iPad.

The PDF workflow only works for PDF, not epubs - something I didn’t know until you created this thread!

Everyone gets 5GB for free, but yes I rent iCloud storage for source code and white papers, books, not to mention several thousand pictures. I want a bit more than 5GB. It is a very simple way to ensure I get at least one duplicate of source quickly ( in case computer explodes or is borrowed for ever or falls into the deep blue ).

PS. For the pundits. Every milestone gets pushed to dev server and github ( at least four copies of important stuff ).

I don't as many others do not, so you use your rented storage space to sync, which does not involve you in the discussion, sorry.

so you learned something, great. but I still don't know of anyway to send an non apple ebook to my iMac, unless I download it again from the web, or drag over manually in iTunes connected iPad Pro.

Those pretty much are the only options given it's a restriction in iBooks. At least you have the iTunes method available to you. Us poor sods on Windows or Linux don't.

I have finally got my issue resolved and confirmed by Apple this afternoon. Syncing my devices w iCloud requires that I rent iCloud storage for anything over 5gb total data. Nothing will be synced over 5gb unless I rent the additional data storage in the cloud.

Have stopped syncing w iTunes on my High Sierra iMac, and now rent 2TB digital storage a month. End of device syncing issues.
