iPhone How to prepare for the iOS 6 untethered jailbreak?

Hey everyone,

I'm really hoping someone could please help me?

I was reading, and saw this http://m.ibtimes.co.uk/ios6-untethered-jailbreak-status-supported-devices-release-429360.html the untethered iOS 6 jailbreak could possibly be released this Sunday? That's great.

Will someone help out with step by step instructions what is exactly required from start to finish for preparing my iPhone 4 for this jailbreak including backing up, restoring like do I use redsn0w and enter DFU, and then iTunes for restoring, and saving blobs/tickets, and everything else? I also currently have the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak. Or no that no one won't be able to post those instructions?

Ok, follow the following to the letter:

1. Connect to iTunes
2. Restore (Do no Update) via iTunes to 6.1.0
3. ??
4. PROFIT~


Yes, I am being 100% serious. No sarcasm, any other member will vouch for that.
 
Here's how I roll.... it's a bit excessive but it covers all the bases.

1. Download appropriate 6.1 IPSW from here for your iPhone model.
2. Open iTunes.
3. Backup your iPhone using iTunes.
4. With iTunes open put your iPhone in DFU mode (Google it if you don't know how).
5. Option + click (I think its Ctrl + click in Windows) the Restore button in iTunes. This will allow you to select the 6.1 IPSW you downloaded.
6. After 6.1 finishes installing you can now restore the backup of your iPhone you created in step 3.
7. After backup has finished restoring, use the latest build of TinyUmbrella [link] and backup your SHSH blob locally.
8. Done.

You've got way too many unnecessary steps.

OP, all you need to do is:

1. Connect to iTunes.
2. Backup your phone.
3. Click Restore (DO NOT UPDATE). iTunes will automatically download 6.1.
4. After restore is done, instead of setting up as a new phone, restore from your backup.
5. Wait!

You can click "Update" via iTunes. It's fine.

Like I said its excessive and borderline obsessive compulsive. So yeah, don't follow my instructions, follow nepalisherpa's. :)

Hey guys, so i upgraded my phone (i did the back up before hand as well)

But why did you restore to your back up? Is there a reason? Do I have to do this? (I backed up @ 6.01, upgraded, took the SHSH blobs via TY and redsn0w) Should I restore to my back up?

You don't have to restore your backup. Most people want to have their phone in the state it was before the restore. You can start new if you want.

There is no reason why you shouldn't if you want your data and files.
It's perfectly fine to use your backup from iCloud/iTunes.
 
Well, When I Upgraded, I think it sync'd automatically and all my files/music is there. so uhhh... I think i'm good? lol Its not like its a blank slate.

I like setting up as a new phone when upgrading to a new iOS and new jailbreak.

I've never actually had issues with jailbreaks before, but everyone freaking out over blobs and downgrades and this and that has me wondering lately have I been doing this wrong all along? Lol.

I've never saved blobs to be honest. I thought Cydia did it for me ever since I clicked that "make my life easier" button a long time ago.

Man.... I've been jailbreaking since 2010, but suddenly I feel like I don't know ANYTHING about jailbreaking. I'm kind of nervous about rejailbreaking my phone when this new jb tool comes out next week.

There's a lot of new stuff and the shsh blobs change everything.
Feels like its an ongoing continues learning when it comes to the JB scene.
Things change and move fast and I agree that it does get complicated and confusing. Even for longtime members that keep up with iphone hacking on the regural.
The early days of the original iphone and iphone 3G that was Pwned for life are over:D
Apple stepped up their security big and they keep improving with each ios update.
 
Anyone ever do a clean restore without loading a backup and just set up everything manually again? I know it takes longer but might be a good idea since I've had i5 since release?

I usually do that.
I just restore and setup as new and download just my contacts via icloud.
But restoring from backup would be fine also.
 
So at the top of Cydia for all the blobs or lists multiple blobs, which obviously includes 5.1.1 because that's what I'm currently on. But it also includes 6.0.1. So how does it have that?

I'm going to setup as new as well. I don't use iCloud though. I jump through hoops using multiple apps, Dropbox and emails to remember **** I need.

Why am I so dumb? Lol

Usually Cydia requests and saves them automaticly or you might have used tinyumbrella to pull them back then when they were still signed by Apple.
 
I have the 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak on my iPhone 4. Do I still use the iTunes backup? The reason why I'm asking because I am going to try to explain it? If backing up in iTunes, would that backup my 5.1.1 jailbreak with Cydia, and would it be safe to restore that backup when the new JB comes out even though the backup backed up my 5.1.1 JB?

I also agree the JB use to be much and a lot easier. I have the iPhone 4 CDMA, and never upgraded my phone. It came preinstalled with iOS 4.2.10, and there was no need for DFU. All was required was running the app of JailBreakMe, and it done everything for me, and now you have to do whole bunch of steps even putting it into DFU. It was a lot easier when I first got my iPhone. That's just my opinion on what I think.

I can confirm the blobs are different, though I don't know what that means in practice. First I 'updated' through iTunes, saved the blobs. I then read a little more here and in DFU mode 'restored' using the download 6.1 ipsw, I saved the blobs again and although they are same file size (3.76k), the MD5 checksum is different.

So I now have two sets of blobs for 6.1, so I guess all eventualities should be covered.

Neither iTunes nor iCloud backup a jailbreak as far as I know.
