So.. If I went and bought an iPhone today, what is the chance it will have 6.1 on it? And if it does, will I be able to jailbreak it?

I can confirm the blobs are different, though I don't know what that means in practice. First I 'updated' through iTunes, saved the blobs. I then read a little more here and in DFU mode 'restored' using the download 6.1 ipsw, I saved the blobs again and although they are same file size (3.76k), the MD5 checksum is different.

So I now have two sets of blobs for 6.1, so I guess all eventualities should be covered.

As far as i know, all it really does is make it incompatible with redsn0w's downgrading capability if you updated instead of restored.

I personally upgraded to 5.1.1 when it was released, and an attempt to re-restore to ios 5.1.1 failed due to wrong blobs.

Did you update to 5.1.1 OTA from within the phone?
Cause if you updated with itunes and saved all your blobs needed then you should have been able to rerestore.

Hey Applejuiced,

Are you able to share with me how to save 6.1 SHSH blobs? Also, thank you for your help and everyone else as well!

Download TinyUmbrella
Launch it
Plug in your phone
Hit the Save button
Done.

Thank you! I appreciate it. That's easy enough. I was reading about the advanced tab with checking and unchecking the boxes. I guess that's not required, so leave everything on default?

It backs up all the plist settings files, including those of JB apps/tweaaks. It does not backup the app/tweak it self though

Yeah, I am always hesitant to restore from backup when going between major versions (e.g., 5.x -> 6.x). I remember when going from 3.2 to 4.0 I had issues with stability and battery life until I restored and set up as new.

Yes.
You can do a restore at any time you want.

i did a restore last night and loaded my backup(before i did ota update). but it didnt load any new software on it since it was already on 6.1 it didnt re-dowload 6.1 and load it so i wasnt sure.

Where is everyone downloading tiny umbrella from? I tried googling it last night and it popped up with a Blogspot website, but every download link on there is for other bogus crap. Then I tried cnet and the download for tiny umbrella on there was some stupid search toolbar for your Internet browser.

Select your OS version on the right side of the screen.

Here's how I roll.... it's a bit excessive but it covers all the bases....
That is how I roll w/ all my jb, never had battery issues.
Step X would be to Restore as NEW & no backup IF I were in a jb fw at the moment of a new jb.

When Jailbreaking doesn't your blobs get saved automatically to Cydia? Do we have to do it seperately now?

Also what is OTA :)

cheers
Usually, but better to have them ready on your computer if something happens like a new FW before Cydia could get to your device to request the blobs from apple.
OTA=over the air update. You should restore using iTunes and not OTA for this jb since OTA updated iOS devices are untested to work properly w/ the new jb and the blobs itself are different if OTA vs normal restore.

Ok, follow the following to the letter:

1. Connect to iTunes
2. Restore (Do no Update) via iTunes to 6.1.0
3. ??
4. PROFIT~

Yes, I am being 100% serious. No sarcasm, any other member will vouch for that.

Umm... I think I screwed up. I updated then used tinyumbrella to save the shsh files. Did I ruin my JB chances or just the rollback? I let iTunes DL the update after I plugged in my iPad and iPhone. :(

Edit: I download the .isw or whatever files. Can I just use them and restore or is it to late?

You can click "Update" via iTunes. It's fine.

Thanks
Guess I should have read past the second post before panicking. LOL

Here's how I roll.... it's a bit excessive but it covers all the bases.

1. Download appropriate 6.1 IPSW from here for your iPhone model.
2. Open iTunes.
3. Backup your iPhone using iTunes.
4. With iTunes open put your iPhone in DFU mode (Google it if you don't know how).
5. Option + click (I think its Ctrl + click in Windows) the Restore button in iTunes. This will allow you to select the 6.1 IPSW you downloaded.
6. After 6.1 finishes installing you can now restore the backup of your iPhone you created in step 3.
7. After backup has finished restoring, use the latest build of TinyUmbrella [link] and backup your SHSH blob locally.
8. Done.

About #5. I'll confirm for a Windows user since I just done it this morning, so I am on 6.1 now. It's actually Shift+Restore. It's no big deal. I'm just correcting it because I did try the Ctrl+Restore, and it didn't work. I did follow your instructions in my quote. Thank you for writing the instructions for me!

You are correct, no reason to be in DFU mode

Thanks. Also do I really need blobs? I didn't do it when I jailbroke my 4s on 5.1.1, but I imagine it would be a good insurance. The question is though, doesn't Cydia back it up everytime you open it? So is there a real need for you to do it yourself?

If they say to save the blobs I would venture to guess you should save them. Cydia has already saved mine and with everyone uploading theirs it can take a while. Its still a good idea to retain your own blobs should something happen.

You are not out of the loop. Just go to iTunes and hit Restore. That will make it a fresh 6.1 copy. Then, if you want, do a "Restore from Back-up" to recover all information.
