Edge™: Great shaving cream, bad browser!

... If you care about the future of the internet and your privacy then you should not be using Chromium at all and that means using Safari (if you don't care about Privacy) or Firefox (If you do care about Privacy) . If anything happens to Firefox or Safari then Google will basically own the internet.

Has Safari become that bad? I know that Chrome collects browsing history, but Safari?

I have a better solution:

1: Drag Chrome to the Trash Can,
2: Right click trash can
3: Click empty
4: Click okay.
5: Open Safari
6: Browse away.
7: There is no step 7.

There, much better browser that’s already preinstalled on all Macs.

(And if you are paranoid about privacy, just enable private browsing mode. That’s the default at all Apple Stores anyways.)

This. This. And I'll say it again. This.

Edge is a hidden gem in Microsoft's software stack. It's as if all the best developers work in this project, and the result is probably the best Chromium build I've used.

Edge has had energy management for months now and it works brilliantly. It doesn't get anywhere near as bloated as Chrome, and updates are frequent and bring many cool features. (They were also one of the first browsers to offer native Apple Silicon build. Months and months before Google managed to roll a version for Chrome).

I've been using it for just over 2 years now, and I haven't looked back. I recommend it to everyone.
I am so shocked and pleased by it. I installed it out of frustrating on my Intel MBP because Chrome was such a resource hog and I had seen processes running when Chrome wasn’t open. I am shocked at the quality of Edge. It even made me switch from safari!

Hopefully Google eventually gets around to creating a working autofill password. For years now if you change your password, Chrome doesn't pick it up for like, 2-3 weeks so it will autofill the wrong password. This has happened on every computer I've touched with Chrome on it so it's not a one off.

You'd think for a company who does leetcode interviews they'd be able to fix such a tiny thing.

I don’t really understand the logic behind having 10 (or 100) browser tabs active in the background. Seems unnecessary and sloppy to me.
A few tabs, OK, but a dozen or more?

It depends what you are doing.

For work, some people on my team keep a lot of tabs open because it’s easier to search through tabs than to search through history. They use the tab groups to keep wiki pages and relevant docs organized together

How does the memory and CPU management in Chrome discussed in this article compare to Safari?

Lots of praises here but I'm my experience Edge is no better than Chrome in memory management, recently it's so bloated it feels like a giant adware, their sleeping tabs features barely do anything, this tab discarding approach in recent versions of Chrome is more efficient in saving memory. If you have a base model MacBook I recommend choosing at least 1h discard. You can enable these flags in Arc too.

Like most people on here, I don't use Chrome, so no worries on that front. I'll use safari a bit, but mostly I use the DuckDuckGo browser. It's only on iOS, iPadOS, and MacOS at the moment, but since that's all I use, I'm okay with that. I'll use Firefox if I'm on my Raspberry Pi, but I'm not browsing the web often on that computer.

Something is not right in your config it seems. From my experience, Edge is a very secure browser and I’ve never heard of random ads and content appearing out of nowhere.

If you could provide evidence of those stories, it would be appreciated.

I have yet to encounter a memory issue with Chrome, both my computers have 32GB of RAM. I use it mostly because of their developer tools and sync. Plugins for previewing JSON content, custom CSS and JS per site are also a massive plus. But then I never have more than 5 or so tabs open in one or two windows.

My girlfriend is using Chrome too, on her Intel MBA, no issues either.

I'd just be delighted if Chrome stopped crashing every single time I plug my Mac into my Studio Display. It has been like that every day since October, even with all extensions removed and a single blank tab open.

If you could provide evidence of those stories, it would be appreciated.
no, people will deny the situation and I dont care or have the time to spend on Miscosoft anymore.
(im not even fixing that typo)

and this is th decade were everyone else can write anything bad about anything
without proof or a source, and get heralded and kudos.

Just beware, real  users!

Firefox, thirty seconds adjusting settings and uBlock Origin really is all you need. Made the switch back a couple of years ago and have never been happier with my browsing experience. Even use Firefox on my iPhone. I know the browser engine is the same as Safari (for now, let's see what the EU have to say about that) but having it sync with my desktop is nice.

Depending on your stance on security and anonymity I can highly recommend "Librewolf".
I probably have trust issues, but I do really like my privacy!

The fact that this statement exists is wild

“Google claims the new Memory Saver feature means Chrome uses up to 40% and 10GB less memory.”

My brother in Christ how do you consume up to 10GB of memory in the first place
Erm... tracking routines?

If you use Firefox on iOS/iPadOS you can't use any content blockers though, right? I use Firefox on desktop but I'm still on Safari on mobile because Wipr blocks ads for me but as far as I know can't be activated on any third-party browsers.

Thanks for the tip for those of us who still need to use Google Chrome for compatibility with specific online services, apps, or programs that require Chrome, like some online banking apps and others. I will give this a try on my new 8GB, 256GB Mac Mini M2 to save from using as much swap memory, from using more of the precious 8GB RAM than it should, and also saving more of the Mac Mini M2 CPU for use by other programs.
