1. Is Handbrake still worth it if you want to keep full DVD quality? What settings would you use for this?

2. I'd like to keep the quality pretty near to DVD quality, while still saving some space. What are your favourite settings for this?

3. Can handbrake now keep the subtitles / closed captioning?

1) No, Handbrake compresses the (already compressed) DVD into another codec, resulting in loss.

2) 2.0 - 2.5mbit Main Profile H.264 will probably be mostly indistinguishable from the original. This will not play on the iPod.

3) Yes, insofar as I'm aware.

Just ordered Apple TV

So I just ordered the Apple TV this afternoon and thought I would get to work on ripping my DVDs. I know that no one knows for sure about the Take 2 update, but my biggest concern was about sound.

I know we don't know for sure if our ripped videos will support 5.1 surround sound, but I want to make sure that I rip them with 5.1 sound if it does let us. Does the normal Apple TV setting in Handbrake rip it with 5.1 or is there another setting I need to do?

The consensus seems to be to wait until Take 2 is released and see what happens. In the meantime, just spend your time ripping the DVDs where you're not overly bothered about the 5.1 soundtrack. Sitcoms and the like for example.
