There is an App that might solve the problem.
Install "GoDial" from app store.
If you're confused, this is the one:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/godial-speed-dial-call-group-text-group-email/id923410857?mt=8

It's almost like the default Phone app, so getting on with it shouldn't be a problem.

Now, here comes the fun part,
Go to settings and Turn Single tap on dial - "OFF"
I suggest you Change your Start Tab to "Contacts" as well.

Now check the recent/history tab and tap on anywhere,
A dialog box will ask you to confirm the call, and you can now choose "Cancel"

There it is - simple, hope that helped - Thanks.

But that only works if you specifically use that app, while incoming calls and all the default handling on the phone would still be going through the regular Phone app nonetheless.

I have this beef as well, only this is on my work phone which I use primarily for email outside of business hours. The only calls I get are spam/telemarketers, so I DEFINITELY don't want to call them back. I too am primarily an Android user, so this feature on iPhones drives me nuts.

Looks like as of iOS 11 (if not earlier) you can disable aspect of it from the lock screen at least:

Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Return Missed Calls

I was so happy to hear about the app, but then saw this reply, and realized I was back to square one, since I'm not going to reinvent the wheel and use the app to make all my calls. Plus, incoming calls won't be on the app. It's hard to believe this isn't a bigger problem for more iPhone users, and Apple never saw the need to fix this.

I think the part about this not being that much of an issue for many (if not most) is probably the one that at least in some way influences the part about seeing the need to do something about it.

Thanks! The ui design makes it darn easy to fall for those scam call calling you from overseas!

I just found that their is a jailbreak tweak that allows a person to change this stupid setting of Apple. It's actually a very popular tweak, so I am not the only one who thinks Apple should've made this feature better.
[doublepost=1542985458][/doublepost]So what is the "jailbreak tweak"? I was searching on this question because I also hate this feature!

A jailbreak tweak basically refers to something that you can apply to your device (like an app or more along the lines of a settings change/addition) if your device is jailbroken.

The post you are replying to, and thus the Jailbreak you are referring to, is from 2013. You can't do that these days with the modern iOS12.

How many years ago now did this thread start? Any solutions yet. Just tapped a missed call notification expecting details of the missed call and it started calling them back really late at night. Wish I could turn it off. I like to keep notifications on my lock screen for calls in case I ever lose my phone and can so phone it and maybe I will be lucky and answer my lost phone. Otherwise I may just disable all call notifications. Such a nuisance feature

Indeed one of the most annoying features of an iPhone in my opinion. I wish they would give us an option. I'm sure some people are fine with it and others hate it. Choices please. Oh wait it's apple, no choice for you!

This happened to me the first few times after I got my first iPhone.
Then I learned how to use that feature of the phone! ;)

The only work around I found was to turn off the telephone call notifications and self-check the missed calls in the phone app itself.

10+ years from the original post and it's still annoying. Yes, it's how the UI has always worked, but it makes no sense why tapping an item in Recents behaves differently than it does in most of the stock apps - Contacts, Mail, Messages, and even the 'Contacts' section of the Phone app itself - where tapping simply opens up more detail about the item you tapped.

I just came here because I have the same frustration's trough this inconsequential call-function.
And indeed "10 years from the original post" it still affects people (me and quite a few of the folks around me).
My complements to Ajxoxo for his clear explanation and insistency trying to make Apple see they made a mistake, and admit this by correcting their 'faux pas'.
Otherwise, Apple does really well, I still buy iPhones.

I've done this. I just trained my brain to not do that. What blue arrow? I see a blue "i". But yea get how annoying it is.
