As for what’s the major difference over an Apple TV (or other streaming devices for that matter), the major difference with Chromecast is it is completely dependent upon other devices to begin the streaming process. Apple TV, Roku or Android TV devices can operate independently with their associated remote controls without the need of a mobile device to browse/play content.

Can you give an actual example of what do you mean by the above ?

Sure! I walk into my living room, grab the remote for my Roku Ultra (or streaming stick) and hit the power button, it fires up my TV (through CEC via the HDMI connection) and I'm presented with a menu of app options on the device that I can just jump into. At my disposal are apps like Netflix, Youtube, YoutubeTV, Disney+, Amazon Prime, or a host of other network specific apps that I have available through my cable provider. I'm on Spectrum, so in addition to the Spectrum app for local programming I can also dive into network specific apps like Discovery stuff that I like like Motor Trend etc.. One doesn't NEED cable though, I'm just describing the various content sources that I have because I happen to have cable in addition to other streaming subscriptions.

None of that activity requires me to touch my phone or ipad at all.

IF I happen to be on my iPad . . and I am browsing in YouTube, or I'm in Netflix etc. I can invoke streaming from the iPad if I wish. I'm not able to do screen mirroring though, for stuff like Safari web browsing.

The chromecast in contrast is reliant upon another device to do anything.

Hi Guys,

So I have an iPad Pro 2018. I want to wireless Stream Movies and YouTube from and also surf the Internet on an external Display from it. How can I do it ? What are my options ? (Cheapest)

Please advice.
Airplay to my 55” LG C9 is amazing.

this video shows how to do it

Ok, so the Major difference emerging between using Chromecast and Apple TV is, with Apple TV you can also Mirror and at the Same time Airplay your device to an external Monitor. With Chromecast you can only Cast(Airplay) not Mirror with an Apple Device. It can be done on an Android Device, but Mirror Option in Chromecast is not available for any Apple Device !

This for me is a pretty big deal breaker in terms of going for Chromecast as I would also like to browse websites and show Photos on Big Screen to someone or see myself. For this I would require Mirroring not Airplay (Apple Terminology) or Casting (Google Terminology).

Isn't AirPlay is display resolution limited to 1080p?

Nope ! IMO Airplay has no bearing on the Quality of Video being Transmitted. It is just a Data Transmitting Signal that cannot inhibit any Data Passage. We would not have Apple TV 4K in that case ?

The last discussions here on this were rather pessimistic on 4K:

The 4K advertised is likely the 4K capability when getting content from iTunes Movies.
