Could you let us know what the more obscure/duplicated system sounds are for - ie. what's the difference between "SIMToolkitSMS.caf", "ReceivedMessage.caf" and "sms-received.caf", and basically which of those 3 would you use to change the SMS received sound?!

i changed "sms-received.caf" to this: http://random.platinum-central.com/mail_mutha****a.wav (in the place of the **** replace the F word, i guess MacRumors is G rated even in links?)

and it works perfectly!!!!

(i also made that sound clip my new email alert)

Awsome

I did it last night. The guide makes it really easy even if you don't know a lot about terminal and command line (like me).

I hit a snag because i put only one ringtone in to test the procedure at first. I tried to add more later and ran into problems on the last step. I could not update the services.plist the second time around (this is the file needed to keep syncing capability with itunes). After the second time my phone in itunes showed only 300mb of capacity and 197mb taken up by "other."

So i did a complete reset and started from scratch. The third time around everything worked great.

If anybody knows if the steps are suppose to be different after the first time it may be helpful.

Tip: if you jack the volume of the files your using as custom ringtones in an audio editor you can get significantly louder ringing than the supplied apple ringers.

You can add as much ringtones as you want, as long as you have space..

I'm trying to find the tone that sound when you plug the cable into the iphone and the battery icon comes up.. I've tried ussd.caf and short_low_high.caf but it's not those..

I've gotten the Voicemail, Lock, Unlock, new-mail, ReceivedMessage, & Sms-Message all working great.. I'm using a mix between a Star Trek/Star Wars sound themes, so when I lock/unlock my phone it sounds like a light saber..
When I get emails it R2D2 beeps, and when I get sms messages/voicemails The Enterprise's computer lady says "Incoming Transmission.." hahaha

Anyways.. yah just follow the steps and everything works great..
don't forget to update your services.plist EVERYTIME!

What's "ReceivedMessage" for?

And, when you put the iPhone into silent mode, do ALL the sounds turn off (even the sound when you put it in the dock to charge, lock/unlock etc.)?

I take it you can just get all your sounds (ringtones and alert sounds) ready and just put them all across in one go, without having to go back and do each one seperately/updating the services.plist etc.?

Not sure exactly what receivedMessage is for.. But I changed it anyway.. Anything incoming would match the sound I made.. HAHAHA.. If someone could map these sounds out w/ a description that would help a lot too.. I'm kinda lazy to do that, cuz I'll have to restore and reload 8gbs of crap..

And yah, prepping your ringtones (editing the part that you want to hear when ur phone rings instead of the whole song) is highly recommended.. Otherwise when you finally get ready to do it, you have like 1 song to load.. then spend another 2 hours figuring out what you want to load and editing again.. And you have time to search for different system sounds that you want to replace..

Also, when u flick tht silent mode switch.. ALL sounds are muted..

does anyone know where we can download sounds from other phones? i had an ericsson before this one and i really miss ericssons message alert 3 for text messages

I'm surprised to how easy this actually was took me about 10 mins to change all tones to custom something or other.

Is there a way to remove these without doing a hard reset?

There is a remove directory command that you can use to remove files without doing a hard reset. This is explained in the instructions as well and is very helpful.

These ringtones are in addition to the apple supplied 25.

now what we really need, is to use the "got mail" sound from Euro Trip.

"Mail Mother F***er!!"

This may not be the proper place but i couldn't find a forum section on hacktheiphone.com. Do you know what happens/what to do if putfile services.plist fails. I assumed incorrectly that file was already present. I subsequently had to reset and start over. Just wondering and thanks for all the info!

Hey guys! I just started making some ringtones, and I made a ringtone from the iPhone commercial.

Here it is!
iPhone Commercial Ringer

P.S. - I haven't put it on my phone yet, but I am planning to add 2 or 3 different songs. Can I add them all at once, or do I have to do each at different times?

Also, can I delete it all and make it a "fresh" iPhone? The reason I ask, is because my iPhone's battery is being repaired and right now I am using the Apple Service Care Phone.

I think I ran into a similar problem. I thought it was working but my ringtones didn't show up, and then I click "restore" on itunes and it restored it but still only shows 300mb available, and when I try to open jailbreak it says it couldn't do it. any advice?

I keep starting over and sometimes I get to where I type in 'putfile' but when I turn teh phone on the ringtones aren't there. After the first time you do jailbreak and restart the phone, do you have to do it again before typing in ./iPhoneInterface or do you do it as soon as jailbreak runs the first time?

I don't know. I don't think jailbreak will work with the phone in that condition. That's why I restored when it happened. The restore fixed my phone. It does take a while to restore because itunes has to download the dmg file itself befoe it does anything to the actual phone. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Posted with my iPhone while doing 55mph on the highway (no I am not driving). Damn I love this thing.

It doesn't loop perfectly and it hits the ceiling a bit but not bad. I'm wondering which commercial you got that from ... is there one where the narrator doesn't speak?

No, I used the original song. Its called "Perfect Timing (This Morning)" by Orba Squara
