let us know how you get on MrT!!!
one month to go to offical release!!!!!!!

what's your plan? are you staying with a contract or using payg?

Well, i am not really sure yet, but atleast for a few days i will use an old pay as you go sim, with a bit of money on.

after that i might get an e2save.com deal where you get 12 months free on a 12 month contract, with 02, the problem with this is, youve got to post bills to e2save.com in order to get money back, so if you forget, your landed with an expensive contract!! anyway... i would then sell the phone i get free with that contract for about £50, which would cover 1/4 of the iPhones cost!!

Im on osx and used the modifymyiphone method to jailbreak and unlock my phone.ive been iup and running for 2 weeks now in the uk and couldnt be happier.loads of information, ease of use,as long as you follow the instructions to the letter!

2 questions ... what version of itunes do I need to be upgraded to ? I can find a dmg file somewhere.

Second, does this method require a SIM to be in the phone? An ATT sim? A local SIM? (I'm abroad)

1) I unlocked mine using iTunes 7.4.1
2) I left my ATT sim in until the modmyiphone instructions said otherwise.. yu can take it out from the start if you wish.. it just means you'll get more annoying popups about ATT sim not activated etc..

I hope you get it. Isn't parcel force Royal Mail?

I hope theyre not striking too :(

i'm pretty sure its just the letter part of royal mail thats on strike, cos in my local post office i was still able to renew a tax disk ect, i think parcel force operates independantly... so I HOPE!!

Ah! I forgot that the iphone, even purchased online, would come with a blank, ready for activation, ATT sim!

Thanks mate

waiting for parcel force is really killing me!! ok, if they stop delivering at 5.30... ive got 1hour and 40mins to wait (MAX)

MrT has it arrived?? Congrats if so!

MrT I'm about 3 days behind you- a friend is on his way back from the US with one for me. Also having trouble sleeping at night, half with excitement and half with a pang of anxiety.

Are you going to do the full monty sim unlock with modmyiphone? I have read it and it sounds doable.

Are you tempted to hang fire for a few days to see if you unlock it straight with 1.1.1?

Has it come with a AT&T sim?

Please keep us posted on your progess and any glitches.

@ eVolcre: There is a link to a dmg of iTunes 7.4.1 (on an apple.com support page) on the modmyiphone guide. They recommend you use 7.4.1 and explain how to properly downgrade if you have put the .2 update on ur system.

I was researching exactly that in preparation for myself. Hope this helps.

Can we use this thread for us new unlockers? I mean, I've read all the other thousand posts and if I ask "dumb" questions, I think someone might be rude or ask me to read the manual.

I figured we could help each other out in our own private thread :)

My iphone gets here tomorrow. Its a week 38 and apparently a 1.0.2 firmware. Going to go ahead and unlock it etc and then wait and see what happens with the 1.1.1 situation.

I read modmysimphone too and that's what I *plan* on doing. What version of itunes are you guys on? Because I think I need to find an older dmg somewhere to get to 7.4. I'm only at 7.1.1

Here's a little question. I have 7.1.1 of iTunes installed. Using the linked DMG ( I found the page you mentioned), I don't have to back up my music etc right? It's the same as upgrading through software download ..

MY IPHONE ARRIVED!!

hi, well, at 4.32 my iPhone arrived, i unwrapped it, and quickly 'activated' it, i followed instructions to unlock it, these worked very well..

it did come with an AT+T sim... but i am on UK t-mobile now!!

all you out there wanting to import and unlock like me... its very very easy and well worth it.

i am running 1.0.2 -
the reson i am not typing this from my iPhone, is cos i am trying out some 3rd party apps... so far so good!!

Because the seller of the iphone did not post for ages and ages, they sent $20 as a way of saying sorry!! so the total price (inc postage) ended up being only $392

does anyone know if i can claim the $100 early buyers money if i am in the UK?

SO i follow that link and click on the dmg file which should upgrade my itunes. Do I need to UNINSTALL anything for this to work?

@eVolcre: I am not sure cos I haven't done it yet. Modmyiphone recommends uninstalling newer versions (using appdelete) and then installing 7.4 from the .dmg. Older versions of iTunes should be fine without removing. I will wait to do it until I actually have my iPhone in my hand.

Congratulations MrT, enjoy your new unlocked iPhone- but don't be getting cheeky by asking for $100 rebate!

On a separate note... 1.1.1 has (as we have heard) been 'jailbreaked', but there is no way at the moment that 'mortals' can do it. We also know that upgrading a Simunlocked iphone to 1.1.1 is risky- riskier than just one that has been jailbroken for 3rd party apps.

So my question is this: If you have in ur possession a 1.0.2 virgin, unregistered iPhone, is it wise to wait for a simple (GUI) way of sim-unlocking 1.1.1 before doing anything?

Answers on a postcard...

Mine's at 7.1.1 (itunes) so I'm good to go. I can't tell you what to do but here's my plan. Keep it for a week and do nothing. See if there is an easy foolproof way to simunlock 1.1.1. If not, I'm going with 1.0.2 and would be ok , for now, to stay at that since 1.1.1 added nothing I need.

And the way I see it, if they figure out how to unlock, jailbreak 1.1.1 they will eventually find a way to take unlocked 1.0.2 phones to 1.1.1 without anything going wrong.

So many numbers!

Good plan, except one thing... good luck holding the thing for a week and not using it!!

Given the alternative, I don't mind being patient. If I break something, I have no way of sending it back. I'm in IRAQ right now.

@ everyone else, I used the 7.4 itunes dmg to upgrade. No problems. Didn't lose my libraries or playlists

So have you guys been following all the latest news? I for one have no idea what it all means. Still don't know what firmware I got but would like to know my options ..

1. 1.0.2 .. unlock using the old way and stay there

1. 1.1.1 is there a new unlock SIM unlock created for 1.1.1 or do I have to downgrade and THEN unlock

3. 1.0.1 (depends on the answer above). Upgrade to 1.1.1 using itunes and then use an unlocking method.

I won't have access to an ATT SIM so I'm asking about the methods where you can spoof activation.

Hi eVolcre, its been about a week. Where are you up to?

I've finally got a delivery date for my iPhone -tomorrow before 1pm UK time.

I have been trying to keep up-to-date but things are moving crazily fast.

To summarize as I understand it:
The process (from out-of-box to sim unlocked) is and always was 3 steps:
1)Activating Sim without AT&T
(an apple term and extra layer of secutiry, not to be confused with unlocking of jailbreaking).
2) Jailbreaking- Opening iPhone for 3rd party apps. Also then installing AppTap
3) SIM unlocking- uses a 3rd party app to do this.

At the moment we are still in between stools- the holy grail of 1.1.1 full unlock is here but does not have nice easy interfaces for us who are not confident with a terminal screen and stuff like that.

Jailbreak software is now available for 1.1.1 but the steps involve downgrading to 1.0.2, jailbreaking and then reupgrading and rejailbreaking and i think it may be beyond me. This does Activation and Jailbreaking.

AnySim for 1.1.1 is available (as is the $60 iphonesimfree)

I think you need to figure out whether your new iPhone is 1.0.2 or 1.1.1- maybe someone can help you there??

Once you have done that we are in the same boat (I think mine will be a brandnew boxed 1.0.2).

I will be looking into it more tomorrow but any advice or corrections from other readers would be well recieved.
