How to use 2nd Ethernet port in "bridge" mode

Ho hum

My early 2009 Mac mini (mavericks) is connected to my Mac Pro (Yosemite) by Ethernet. The mac pro's other port connects to my router

Yesterday, this didn't work, returning the 'self-assigned IP router' error
Today it does. I have internet connection and access to my synology diskstation, all with the airport turned off.

So it seems flaky and works sporadically.

I'm receiving an Ethernet extender to connect mini to router directly tomorrow - I think this is a better option for my setup.
