How useful is the SD card?

You could store your music library on it, provided your library is smaller than the card capacity.

It is extra storage, or, camera memory card connectivity. That's about it.

It's useful on a computer which has such small internal storage. They should have put it on both MBAs IMO, not just the 13 inch model.

Well, if it can read SDXC cards, you could increase your storage capacity by up to 2TB!

Most likely though, it can only read SDHC cards which have a current limit of 32GB.

I don't think you can put a MicroSD in that massive slot without an adapter.

IMO, they should have just put a MicroSD slot on there.

You can place (with an adaptor) a mini SD card in a standard SD slot, but there is no way you can squeeze a standard SD card into a mini one.

Instead of cluttering up the side of the computer with multiple slots, it seems they gave you the one that could be used by the greatest number of SD cards.

Plus, I don't think SD cards are as dead as 0dev seems to think. I still use SD cards so his assertion that "no one uses SD cards anymore" is a flawed assumption.

I don't have any device that accepts a smaller-than-sd-sdcard cards,… I have 4 that use SD cards,.. would be silly to use slots that are mainly used in phones

Pretty much every DSLR camera uses either SD or Compact Flash, most are switching to SD even though CF has more contacts and has a higher speed. I doubt DSLR's will switch to MicroSD anytime soon because when switching cards you are very likely to drop and lose the card compared to a normal SD card.

Pretty much every Canon P&S I have looked at uses SD as well. I'm sure there are a few with micro but the majority use SD.

Sure you can use it for anything you want but I would guess 99% of people that use the slot use it for transferring photos from their camera. Also you can use adapters to go down to microsd, but not the other way around so by using SD they support way more devices.

Doing a lot of camera shopping this year and have yet to see any microsd cams though. Which ones are you thinking of? Cell phone cams?

Panasonic GF1, LX5 and most of their other higher end cams, Canon G12 all use SD. DSLRS I think are mostly SD or Compact Flash or a combo!

Plus, it can't really be that bad to get an adapter...

our GH1s and GF1 are all SD card cameras, same goes for our Nikons

Exactly. Cell phones use MicroSD. Most standalone cameras still use SD (though I'm using a MicroSD in my camera with an adapter).

MicroSD adapters are commonplace. Having a true SD slot in the Mac makes sense since it can accommodate smaller cards, while a smaller slot could not accommodate a bigger card.

Interesting. A lot of those do seem to be compact point & shoots (which I had no interest in when shopping). I like how the PL150 though does boast about how the microSD card can just be popped into your cell phone for the data connection for sharing (unless you have an iPhone...)
