a bunch of Olympuses... Loads of digital cameras.
What olympuses? Most of them use XD and SD, can't find any on their site that uses microSD or miniSD.

But to answer the question of the topic starter,.. yes! SD is very useful!

Interesting. A lot of those do seem to be compact point & shoots (which I had no interest in when shopping). I like how the PL150 though does boast about how the microSD card can just be popped into your cell phone for the data connection for sharing (unless you have an iPhone...)

That'll be why you didn't come across them then. But they do exist as you can see.

From a quick Google, the Olympus Mju Tough 6010, Olympus µ 7010, and Olympus FE-5020. They seem to use the XD Image Cards and MicroSDs.

All the cameras you've listed are pretty bottom of the barrel..:(

Plus, MicroSD is so slow for the price.

I don't think so, but you can make it work with an adapter.

I just noticed it's an SD slot, not a MicroSD slot. Why? No one uses SD cards anymore, MicroSD is the current technology.

Come on, Apple...

Tell that to my Nikon D90.

Couldn't resist.

In all seriousness though, I'm think the SD card slot would be a great storage solution if both of my macs had a slot for it. My new MBA will have it, but my 2008 MBP doesn't.

+1

And I have read that there may soon not be a 32GB limit so we may see 64GB, 128GB or larger SD cards that the Mac can read (not being able to read SDXC cards apparently...which as I had said, currently run as large as 2TB).

Anyone know the reliability of SD cards?

There would be a riot if Apple used an exclusively Micro SD slot.

LOTS of us have cameras that use SD, and this slot is for transferring photos.

You geeks really crack me up sometimes.

LOL, I agree with you there. One of the reasons I bought the new MBA 13" was for the SD card slot to better work with the cameras I am using.

Then buy a new camera. Most of the cameras you get in shops these days have MicroSD slots.

And who says it's "for transferring photos"? It's an expansion slot, you can use it for anything you damn well like.

I work in a camera shop, and I can only think of Samsung of the units we have carried that used the microSD card. Canon, Leica, Nikon, Panasonic, Olympus, and Sony are all using the "old" SD cards as of now.

Horse.....dead.....beat.........

Seriously, micro SD to SD converters are $1.00 or so each. Many Micro SD cards come with the SD card adapter included.... for free. Olympus, Fuji and their ilk have seen the way things are going and are converting to SD cards in their newer model cameras. Heck, my kid's Fuji camera came with a XD to micro SD converter, almost a concession that XD cards are heading out the door. Like it or not, the market has spoken and the winner of this race is SD, (at least for most consumer level devices)

While I am in no position to argue the technical merits of one form of flash memory over another, it is pretty darn clear, (unless you are talking cell phones) that the SD card is the card of choice in most consumer cameras, ergo, this is the interface Apple chose. I do like the idea of having the SD card serve as extra storage on the new Air models (oops, just the 13" Air). We will see which Apple toy I get next, iPad or Air, iPad or Air...

Yes, as compressed music files are using low data rates (up to 320Kb/s or Kbit/s or Kbps, which is 320/8 = 40KB/s or KiloByte/s), thus the SD card speed would be fast enough.

My as well just mount a network share, I can stream lossless ALACs from home. The SD cards is for people with SD card cameras I guess....

SD slot specs

Well, if it can read SDXC cards, you could increase your storage capacity by up to 2TB!

Most likely though, it can only read SDHC cards which have a current limit of 32GB.

My 13" MBAir is on its way. I've been trying to find out if it can use SDXC cards or if I will be limited to SDHC. Can't seem to find this info anywhere. Does anyone who has received their new machine know anything about this?

I don't think you can put a MicroSD in that massive slot without an adapter.

IMO, they should have just put a MicroSD slot on there.

LOL...What digital camera do you use that takes a MicroSD?

Most point and shoot cameras, maybe. Real cameras (DSLRs) use SD and CF cards. ;)

EDIT: I see this horse was beaten very dead by the time I piled on. LOL!!!

How much does the SD card stick out? I've seen a picture of the Macbook pro where it sticks out as much that you cant leave it in and forget it as I could with my Acer Aspire One. Could the sandpaper trick be used on any SD card or are they different in terms of how much plastic you can sand off before destroying them?

Is there a shorter SDHC card available? Or a shorter mini sd -> SD adapter?
