I find it very interesting that the iPad video on Apple's website shows the user receiving an airline boarding pass. What good is it if it won't print it?

THANK YOU!

Did you notice he deletes it? :D

The real problem with printing is the drivers. Each printer speaks a different language and it is the drivers job to convert what the application wants printed into the language the printer understands. I doubt the iPad will have all of the OS X drivers installed.

Again...boarding pass easily scannable at most major airports from a mobile device.

Again - until it's universally adopted worldwide - you still need to print a boarding pass. Next argument against being able to print?

I said this in another thread - it applies here. Arguing against functionality is stupid. No one NEEDS the iPad to begin with. You've lived your whole life without one and could continue to do so. So arguing against other things which add functionality is a bit hypocritical in the first place.

Who care if you're going to use it or not. There are a lot of things on my iPhone I never use. That doesn't mean I would argue against it or tell people how they should work around not having it.

Without a doubt there WILL be printing functionality, but many people are thinking in 'the now' and just not seeing how things could be with a more mobile-device-centric future.

There's no real argument in this thread except that there are people here that seem to print a lot more than they need to. :)

Some of those arguing the absolute NEED of printing sound like the same people who complained with the original iMac came without a 3.5" floppy! Oh horror of horrors! Those same people bought the $99 external...and proceded to never use it. ;)

Why would I want to print anything on paper?

If I may presume to speak for the educational community ... we like to print things. We just do. And we like to have student assignments handed to us on real paper, so that we can take out our editing pencils and mark them up.

It's true that there are ways to do almost everything electronically. But as somebody said above, "Try telling that to my Art History prof." I don't expect this to change much in the near future. So the iPad had better learn to print.

The same way it reads it from an iPhone. If you have a boarding pass in your iPhone, an airline scanner reads it and accepts it. I've done it several times, no big deal.

The problem is with TSA, not the airline. You have to carry your boarding pass thru the scanning device. Tough to do when your iPad is going thru the xray machine.

QUOTE=mstrze;9412883]Boarding 'passes' have been paperless since 2009 at some airports.

http://www.laptopmag.com/business/travel/your-next-e-ticket.aspx

The story is from Feb 2009, so I assume more sites have come online:

"Travelers who want to take advantage of mobile boarding must first check in through the airline’s mobile site on their phone’s browser. As long as the device is Web-enabled and can receive e-mails and display images, you’re good to go, regardless of the screen size.

After checking in, you’ll see a two-dimensional, encrypted bar code on the screen. Provided your airport has the right equipment, airline officials can scan the bar code on your cell, both at security checkpoints and the gate. If for some reason the system fails, attendants can print your boarding pass at the gate.

American Airlines lets passengers use their cell phone as a boarding pass in Chicago O’Hare International, Los Angeles International, and John Wayne–Orange County airports. Continental has programs in George Bush Intercontinental, LaGuardia International, Newark Liberty International, Ronald Reagan Washington National, Cleveland Hopkins International, San Antonio International, Austin-Bergstrom International, and Logan International airports. Delta is running trials at New York’s LaGuardia International Airport. In total, 13 airlines worldwide offer mobile boarding options."[/QUOTE]

Not the same with iPad. It will be treated the same as a laptop.

It's doubtful there will be any print support in the initial release (beyond the very limited printer apps available in the app store now). Otherwise, I don't see why they wouldn't have made it available in the SDK for app developers to take advantage of. It would be pointless to have this support if apps couldn't use it for printing. So clearly it isn't there in 3.2.

I am really intrigued whether Apple supports printing from the iPad, especially from the iWork apps, in particular the Pages app I feel it is a most for those apps. Most 3rd party apps that are on the iPhone focus on email printing, and I realize that the iPad this isn't a laptop replacement but I think this is a really important feature to include especially to the corporate users who want to use this product to "work on the go"

I hope integrated printing will be there, but I don't think so. But Print n Share for the iPhone allows you to print now, as long as the matching program is on your computer.

Do you know it wasn't included or are you speculating b/c it's not been definitively leaked? Honest question.

Those of you who like the idea of printing by laying the ipad upside down on a copier....

I ran the experiment using 5 different backit LCD devices. Guess what you get?

LOL. Too lazy to check - did someone actually suggest this? :D

Yes. Message 5, then 7,12,22,33, and 35 all though I was a great answer. I thought it was clever. Not practical as it turns out.

Scanning may be a little easier given you can change several settings usually. The default color and B&W copy settings on my Canon Copiers produce a gray/black extremely low contrast version of what was on the color screen.

Mobile/"in the field" printing (thinking outloud)

So, I just dusted off my Canon i70 printer and plugged it into my Time Capsule.

Success!!!! (well, no black - but color worked and hey, it's been sitting unused for oh, 4+ years - not bad!! and i think black is out of ink since i have one sitting here to go in it....)

I have the need to print from my iPad out and about. I'm going to assume that at a minimum, my Eurosmartz solution will continue to work on it. That would involve however, stealing someones laptop and all that jazz to run the server piece on. Which, probably isn't a problem - they made me the Group IT person! LOL!!

So let's move onto solution/assumption #2.

That, some type of wireless printing will work with Bonjour for the iWorks suite (at some point - even if it is in OS4)

Which leads me too - i think i could buy an Airport Express and use it with the i70 and fill my own needs. The AE should stay configured - so i just cart it in wherever i am needing to print, and go from there.

Eliminating the need to do the laptop thing.....

I already own the printer - and the AE is $99 or $79 refurbed, so this seems like the most cost effective solution at the moment. Of course, there is the fact that i could be nuts and it won't work.

I have a laser printer that works with my TC too - so that is a possibility should my mobile printing needs be more than I anticipate right now. But being able to have a small tote with the i70 and the AE in it would work for my weekly meeting.

Does anyone that already owns an AE see any flaws here?

Dang I hate trying to solve things ahead of having the product! (kinda like trying to figure out if i need the VGA adapter to go to a the PICO projector i need - will the dock cable "just work".....)
