This is just marketing crap. It will be a decent LCD screen, but miles behind the quality of decent OLED display.

Actually I went to a store and played around a bit with an iPhone XS max. Screen looks great but I can’t tell the difference with my SE’s 326ppi. Definitely not “miles behind”.

My take on this is unless you have perfect eyesight and enjoy watching hi-def videos on a small screen it probably will not make a difference.

I currently have a Pixel 2 XL. Screen is 2880×1440 at 538 ppi. I can watch Youtube videos at 480p and they look fine. The only time I see a difference is if I drop below 420p. I mean yeah there might be a slight difference in clarity when I switch to 1440p. But it is hardly night and day.

And I am a video snob. But not when it comes to phones. I save that for my living room.

Apple says the Xr has the most advanced LCD in any phone. Sure the PPI isn't the best, but it has "best in class color management", and tap to wake. I also think people are forgetting about the faster touch tracking. Maybe that's not something people actually notice when they use it, but apple made a point to mention it in the keynote.
Not hard to be best in class when everyone who made 326 PPI devices graduated onto better screens years and years ago... the class is fairly small now.

Yeah, because when people talk about the iPad Pro or MacBook Retina, what they comment constantly on is how fuzzy the screens are (both under 300 ppi). LOL. What is it about posting on a tech forum that makes some people so unintelligent?
Ignorance, vanity and stupidity would be my first guesses!

iPP 10.5
  • 10.5-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit Multi-Touch display
  • 2224-by-1668 resolution at 264 pixels per inch (ppi)
According to our online "experts" this display should be horrendous!

Can't see pixels on an iPhone 6, so won't see them on an iPhone XR. And it'll have better contrast too. And no PWM.

Lower PPI LCD = better battery life. Much more important on a phone. Some people sound like they use their phones as a Home Theater setup, LOL. "Hey guys, let's gather 'round the 6.5" iPhone to watch the movie, it has HDR and higher PPI!"

So true! I thought the display was gorgeous on my 7 (not plus). I now have an 8Plus which has a slightly higher res screen and I don't really notice a difference- I would be perfectly happy with an Xr- in fact it looks like an amazing phone and I love that edge to edge display without having to deal with the OLED issues (PWM eye strain, color shift, etc). In fact I wish I could upgrade to it- but just bought my 8Plus as part of the BoGo deal with my carrier along with my wife's Xs Max, so I don't have a way out of it to get the Xr now. :(

Want to buy my mom the XR to upgrade her from the 7Plus. Will the screen resolution and quality be an upgrade on the XR or am I better off getting her the XS Max? She doesn't use the phone camera often, just messaging, reading and some social media.

It looks like from all the comments the consensus is that the 7+ will have a superior display.

Easy tiger...
The screen is not as wide so shows videos 11% smaller than on the 7plus.

Yes its overall area is a bigger but it will show less text in portrait mode due to the narrower display and smaller ppi.

Looks like the XR screen is narrower and therefore effectively smaller than the 8 Plus. And fuzzier because of the lower ppi.

It's kind of funny that you posted that link because according to it, the Xr and 6+/7+/8+ models all have the same number of horizontal points (414) so they will show the EXACT SAME amount of information/text horizontally in portrait mode. But then, the Xr has the advantage of showing a lot more information vertically than the + models. However, it's true that on the Xr, it will be a little "fuzzier" due to less DPI (compounded by the fact the Xr is physically narrower), but depending on the user, they may or may not notice.

In terms of video, as opposed to text content, yes, 16:9 (or lesser ratios) will be shown a bit physically larger on the + models than the Xr, but any video with a higher ratio than that, like the many movies that are 2.35:1, it will be physically larger on the Xr.

Amen man, amen. I watch HDR where it actually means something, 4K Blu Ray HDR discs on a 4K Sony flatscreen with surround sound. On a phone it’s absolutely irrelevant. Post of the year man! Kudos.

PWM is a real issue too. Just spending 10 minutes with the XS and Max I could tell my eyes were having to work much harder. I’ll gladly take the lower ppi, lcd, and no PWM all day everyday. No phone made ever will be worth my eyesight. My God, some people and these phones, it’s crazy. The phone is more important than life itself!
