I would like to see, in order from most wanted to least wanted:

  • True background app support: Apple needs to sort this otherwise I can see a lot of people flocking to Android and/or Maemo phones.
  • WIDGETS: The iPhone has a lovely big screen. Imagine if it could be filled up with various widgets all updating in real time. That home screen would be 10 times more useful!
  • Better notification system: The Android system is brilliant and unobtrusive. You just drag a sliding tray down from the status bar at the top of the screen.
  • UI customisation: Themes, wallpapers, etc.
  • More SMS features: save drafts; a character counter which tells you how many messages you have used so far, and how many characters you have left before it spans onto another message; ability to send texts to groups.
  • Be able to edit/modify everything from the phone. Should be able to delete photos, create folders for photos, move them from folder to folder, etc. And be able to edit/delete your music in the same manner.
  • More bluetooth profiles: The ability to send and receive files would be great.

They could easily make the os for a slower processor base.

why? what are you trying to acheive? better battery life? this is done usually by CPU speed down clocking (so processor is capable of doing X MHz but it is running at 80% of X)

Do you really think slowing the processor down will improve performance? Come on.

lol.. i can just see this:

Apple Inc. announced a new iPhone based on the 386PC architecture and award winning DOS Operating System. "This type of architecture will allow us to extend our battery life to 8 weeks" said Steve Jobs. Many industry analysts believe the 8 week battery life will be possible because the new iPhone will be simply useless.

I wouldn't mind being able to turn off the fancy animations. Sure, they look nice, but they slow me down. I have my finger already tapping the screen where the expected button/control will be when the animation finishes.

I have animations turned off on my Win7 box for the same reason - the fancy animations aren't useful to power users and a fair amount of CPU time could be saved. Imagine being able to close all the Safari tabs as fast as you could tap.

an app that simply turns on and off wifi with one push of a button...or perhaps the settings app is diff. than all the other apps where if you hold it down instead of being able to arrange apps it turns off and on wifi and connects to known network or asks to join.

I find myself using wifi on my iPod touch for short burts to update iCal or check facebook, but want it off other times to save battery.

1. multitasking/app switcher
2. wifi and 3G on/off on main screen
3. better battery life--better optimization

I would thnk #1 and #3 would boost the iPhone popularity immensely.

So most people are asking for multi-app support? i guess that would be cool, how well the battery survives the ordeal though is interesting. Although i guess the flip-side of that is, that every other smartphone on the market seems to pull it off to a good enough standard.

Thinking about it, i would quite like better bluetooth support as well, so i can receive files from other bluetooth users and open them.

Maybe a finder app, which is akin to that of Mac OSX's finder. I dont know if they could re-write the whole OS to accommodate this *not real* finder. Whacha reckon? Using the finder app, you can then use it to open such files that are downloaded from bluetooth.

Who said firewire 800?? This is apple we are talking about lol.. They have always, always used usb for their ipod/iphone line- thus i dont envisage them changing that now, second to that, imagine all the dock connectors that are using some form, or strand of USB to play music and videos from the device, those would all have to change as well :s

PTP

I would also like better accelorometer support. In other apps than the main ones. Like iTunes-now playing which still seems to stay in portrait. Then in landscape it automatically goes to coverflow. I just wanna turn my volume up lol:)

PTP

I want:
BETTER BATTERY!! Any way possible, hardware or software
Ability to lock into landscape or portrait mode
more customization of home screen, etc.
Something like sb settings where you cam easily switch on/off 3g, wifi, etc. When I jailbroke this was my most used thing.
To be able to have custom SMS sounds. (idk if this is hardware or software)

I want:
BETTER BATTERY!!

lol, welcome to the club. i can kill the battery on my 3G in a few hours of heavy use.

battery development is just so far behind the way technology has developed lately. kind of sad. if you think about it, battery is holding up a lot: faster CPU speeds, background processing, etc..

I want a function to switch between apps (with multi-app support). It would work like cmd-tab with a red notification circle if theres something happening in the app just like the home page. It would be activated by holding the home button town or tapping three times, or something like that.

The current app is in the center and larger (like a 2D cover flow) and as the user wipes their fingers they can browse the various open apps, once they are happy with their choice to switch they tap the icon and it slides along with an animation like spaces on OS X.

If they want to close an app they simply swipe it up from the list, like the Pre.
Simply love this idea! Make it happen Apple.

I say iPhone 4. Gen
OLED screen
RFID reader (for wireless pay systems)
Thinner / Lighter
Better battery.
HD video
Video Chat camera on front.
USB 3 support.
Wireless synching.

That would make it perfect.

I'd like to be able to add the song I'm currently listening to to an on the go playlist, perhaps by triple tapping on the cover art.

I'd also like to be able to set shake to shuffle so that it worked when the screen was asleep, without having to unlock it.

+1 for delete all e-mails.

and i forgot to mention one very very very important thing that i consider is crucial to portability and ease of use.....

Wireless Syncing and Charging!!!!!!!! (over Bluetooth & WiFi) ;)

Improvements to iphone

This may seem basic but why can't they add a setting for changing font sizes? If you are in an application that doesn't support the pinch/pull of your fingers you are stuck trying to see your screen. That Zoom :eek:thing is crazy! That's great if you are legally blind but my phone doesn't respond well to that 3 fingered tapping thing and all I'm talking about is maybe changing fonts from a 10 to 15pt range.

Got plenty of ideas for hardware, but for software.....
  • The ability to install apps that haven't been approved by Apple. I'm not stupid; I don't need Apple to tell me what I can and can't do with my phone.
  • The OPTION of having a single mail inbox (sms still separate). Or at least an easier way to switch between accounts
  • Ability to change SMS tones
  • An easier way to switch between "vibrate" and "silent" silent modes. It's a bit annoying to go into the menu. Maybe have it alternate each time the switch is flipped (Normal - Silent - Normal - Vibrate - Normal - Silent... you get it). And a little icon on the screen that tells you which setting it is in.
  • iWork apps.
  • Option to have Leopard-like dock (glossy/transparent)
  • New mail indicator on homescreen (NOT as intrusive as SMS)
  • Less intrusive SMS notifications while the phone is being used
  • Option to not have phone vibrate against your face when you're on a call
  • I don't know what this is called, but the type of homescreen on WinMo phones with upcoming calendar events, SMS count, Mail count, missed calls, etc. The current popup system seems stupid to me.
  • Wireless syncing
  • A F*ck AT&T mode which lets me use SlingPlayer and Skype on 3G. Similarly, a button I can press to [insert evil thing here] the AT&T CEO every time a call is dropped.
(Maybe I should jailbreak again :) )

And to add to my original list: over-the-air (including 3G... not just WiFi ) software updates. Just update the files that have changed, don't re-download the entire firmware. Tell the user that the update is ready, give them the option to install or postpone, restart the phone, and it's done.

The first thing I'd improve is performance on older hardware. 3.0/3.1 lags.. especially when listening to music. It's much better on 2.2.1, so that's where I stay most of the time.
