As it just runs a regular Atom and desktop Windows 7, the slate still has the long boot times and slow performance of a cheaper netbook. Its chief advantages revolve around expansion, as it has a camera, USB and a dock with extra ports and HDMI output. However, its RAM can't be expanded, and its Broadcom HD accelerator can only apply to certain kinds of video rather than 3D or other tasks.

 That brought a chuckle. :D

Because HP has always, and will always be, a printer company. They need to stop throwing away money trying to be anything else.

HP is the largest PC maker in the US, I'd hardly say they are only a printer maker.

I imagine HP should spread it's wings a bit more, like Dell, who doesn't always get it right, but is interested into expanding into new markets.

As far as this Slate, I just can't see it turning out well(as this preview suggests). Its a netbook without the keyboard, which is one of the biggest pluses for many over the iPad. The UI layer HP is putting on Windows 7 would have to be amazing for this device to rival the iPad, and even then, the system would be over taxed(when compared to an iPad) because Windows 7+UI layer is going to take a decent hardware set to run.

Companies are better off trying Android and Chrome OS tablets to fight the iPad(but even then, Android would need some touch ups, like iPhone OS did to run well on the big screen and Chrome OS would need some now-browsers aspects to it)

I kind of wish it was good just so Apple would have some competition, which would motivate them to make the next iPad even more phenomenal. But oh well....the next gen iPad will be good regardless.

The problem is your logic is flawed here. It's not that Apple needs the competition, Apple IS the competition. Remember, they were the last to bring a tablet-style portable computer to the industry so they had to be better than everyone else in order to compete. If anything, the competitors need to step up their game now that the iPad is out.
