The specs look pretty decent. 5 hour battery kinda sucks, but like i said, i would rather have to charge it every 5 hours, which I wouldn't stay on it that long, than have to sync with a computer any time i need to put a new document on it. Plus, it's way cheaper for more functionality. I think this is a real competitor. It's the same weight by the way for everyone who was so sure it would be heavier.

Why it's a completely different topic. The video says nothing about the product. And the prices are with the 3G chip. That makes it $220 less than the iPad with 3G 64 gb. I think this has a better market, it is a lot more versatile for less money. I bet apple drops the price of the iPad by June when this is out.
 
Ugh, HP put a Z series Atom in it? I'm impressed HP was able to keep the same weight as the iPad and similar technology. Rendering on the Slate will be slower in most cases versus the iPad.

Rendering might be a bit slower but considering it is processing a lot more information I take it. Hmmm....I might just hVe to get this one too to compare which one is the keeper. I don't mind the 5 hour battery since I only plan on using this or the iPad at home.
 
I think thread consolidation is a good idea mostly b/c I don't think an iPad board needs more than one thread about any particular competitor that hasn't launched yet. But my quick take from the other thread is, I highly value 10+ hours of battery life (possibly the #1 reason I am thinking of getting an iPad), and I highly value an OS built from the ground up for touch control. Those most likely outweigh the HP's better bang for buck stats. The one thing the HP has that the iPad doesn't that I care a lot about is USB ports that can control a camera or the like.

Basing my knowledge from having worked on 10 Dell Minis at work with the same exact Z series CPUs inside.. They are very sluggish chips with 1 gb of ram. And I was working with XP, not Vista/7. I can only see them being more sluggish on 7. Hopefully HP can optimize the Slate a bit to make it feel snappy. I was actually hoping for a Tegra + N450 Atom at a minimum for performance reasons.

Yeah but I kinda want a slate for modability, install XP on it if I wish, add more ram, remove HP interface from Windows 7 and other stuff I can do.
 
HP has never gotten their touchscreens right and doubt it's going to start now. Why would I want a full os on a tablet with some crappy UI overlay? It means you are going to load your own software that isn't meant for a touch screen. It's the same crap tablets have been for years. If people are wanting an alternative to the ipad then I would wait for an Android tablet.

Goodreader tablet edition $.99 in the app store. No need to sync just to put documents on the iPad. Download straight from the web or from networked computer.
 
Windows 7 performs better than Vista. Not sure how it compares with XP. But yeah. I'd be worried about sluggish performance - gut reaction has me imagining Windows-based smartphones vs. Palm phones, a few years ago.

I really do like HP (and I don't hate Microsoft), so I'd be willing to give this a chance, I think I'd just need to learn more about it for it to potentially make me want to wait instead of buying a 3g iPad. Because my hunch is that the iPad will be an overall better user experience.
 
"Up to 5 hours"? Bwahahahaaaa. Good luck with that. Don't forget by the time this thing comes out Apple will have iPhone OS 4 ready to go as well. I'm sure this HP slate does a few cool things and it's probably not totally dreadful, Apple-hater who can't bring themselves to buy and Apple product will check it out, but it doesn't look like a serious competitor.

RAM was definitely a problem on the Archos 9 PCTablet (also Atom processor with 1GB RAM), but the processor here is much better (1.6GHz vs. 1.1GHz). However by tweaking Win 7 and shutting off some of the Aero features you could get the OS to run pretty smooth and "zippy." Hopefully HP is smart enough (no pun intended) to use their experience and HP Touchsmart interface to optimize the overall performance. Otherwise they'll end up with the same issues the A9 had, a clunky Win 7 OS/interface getting in the way of an enjoyable user experience.

If you want more ram in this slate, looks as if all you gotta do is unsolder the stock ram, and swap in a bigger module. (Don't know yet, because its still vaporware)

Oh that's all? And people complain about the difficulty in upgrading the RAM on a Mac Mini. Just "unsolder the stock ram, and swap in a bigger module"--yeah, the average consumer will be all over that process.

and this is exactly why the iPad is the way it is.

I have so little time in my day as it is, the last thing I want to be doing is fiddling around with OS and hardware settings to get my internet and productivity appliance to work properly.

I've spent too much money and too much time already screwing around with upgrading and tweaking UMPC's that I have given up on them. MS and the OEMs don't understand how to put together an slate.

Now if HP came in and said they were releasing their slate with android, I might have listened, but it is too late for the moment.

Then they can read how simple it is to solder, really people are getting lazy

You think if a consumer has the choice between a product as is or a product that they'll have to solder the RAM themselves to make it useable, they'll choose the later? The vast majority of consumers probably don't know what RAM stands for, much less how find it and replace it.

Sounds like a sure fire guaranteed success. :rolleyes:
