"I fear the U Ultra is yet another HTC offering that brings a few too many compromises for a few too many dollars."

Ouch.
Lol, glad to know I'm not the only one who drops phones and iPads on my face if I read in bed and drift off. Mr Mobile gave me a good laugh there.

Android Central's review https://www.androidcentral.com/htc-...feature&utm_campaign=navigation&utm_source=ac hit the nail on the head for me. They confirmed some fears I voiced earlier about the AI Assistant, the underpinning to the "U/You" concept not being particularly U-seful. Sorry I couldn't resist.

And their observation about the horrible News Republic is not to be overlooked:

"HTC unfortunately still includes some of its most annoying "features" like the spammy, low-quality News Republic app that likes to push crummy "news" at you, and the quite useless Blinkfeed area of the launcher. Thankfully you can disable News Republic, and turn off Blinkfeed or replace the launcher altogether."

Now yes, if you take the time to learn, you can customize an HTC very beautifully, which I've done at times. But when I first had it and was learning my way around it, that shoddy news app on their Sense launcher made me depressed. My God, the kinds of "news" it fetches you is basically trolling the net for the most gory horrible shocking tabloid news about how people and children are horrifically maimed and murdered practically every minute. Or that the end of the world is near. Or Elvis was sighted having dinner with Kanye kind of stuff.

No matter what I did I could not get the built in news aggregator to bring me the kind of news or quality of news I wanted. I wanted election news and would get murdered toddlers instead. Argh. It was clear HTC and News Republic cut some sort of deal to get that horror embedded in the launcher.

I take it Blinkfeed was trying to be like the widget page that Apple has. Despite Apple not being the originator of widgets, Apple does it better. I could not get past some kind of glitch or bug that ruined my ability to get my calendar back on the Blinkfeed page once I'd accidentally removed it. Even my husband could not get it back for me.

Thankfully, Android has a solution for that in the form of custom launchers. I've had a blast trying different ones.

I didn't find my HTC 10 camera as bad as the review would indicate. Not for still photos anyway. For some lighting conditions exposures were bad with video, however, and I had to switch to my Samsung to finish recording a school Christmas concert.

My HTC 10 excels as a phone with the best connections and call quality I've ever had on AT&T. It was a superb buy at $525-$500.

No, I would still not pay $700 or more for it.

I certainly would not pay that for this Ultra mess. It does not sound in any way an interesting or even incremental improvement on what I got for such a great discount.

One reason I overflow with criticisms here is because it's so frustrating how close they are to perfection. Their Uh-oh protection plan is fabulous. Buying directly from their site in the US went very well. I've gotten updates regularly and to Nougat reasonably quickly.

Their audio DAC is incredible and so great with regular headphones. Why get rid of the headphone jack and then make it so the USB C headphones that do come with the phone can't be used on any other USB c device? So much for USB C being a standard!

Why do you sell the dongle separately? Ugh, HTC, you're killing me.

Why spend two years and so much money on that glass finish that really doesn't look anything special compared to the ones on the cheaper Honor 8 phones? Why not put such resources into getting a better news aggregator? Or just getting rid of the shoddy one you have?

The phone is already a behemoth...why not reconfigure it a bit to be thicker rather than slabby and get rid of the protruding camera? That really sticks out.

And really, what is going on with HTC and Google? Why did HTC make so many Pixels that have serious hardware problems? What's going on behind the scenes with HTC? /frustrated venting.

It really is such a shame for HTC.
Something is very wrong there, I don't know who left i who got fired but they better get it all sorted quickly as it seems whoever is at the helm now is not doing a very good job.

March 20th surprise announcement is just a new color of the Ultra U.

Lame.
I have such high regard for my HTC 10. This is such a disappointment that they're making such loopy decisions. But honestly, I saw the JerryRig Everything dissection of an HTC 10 and it's quite a mess in there. They don't have the best focus and discipline to make use of space the way we see other companies like Apple and Samsung doing.
