if only the iphone OS had that sort of feature to integrate with google more i'd be a little more drawn to the iphone. but with not physical qwerty im not going near that thing

other than that, i have been very intrigued by the android OS and i would love to pick up a G1 or a magic if possible to get them in the United States. i love google and i love using gmail, and blogger often.

The Magic doesn't have a physical keyboard.

I never considered the G1, purely due to me not liking the look of the hardware.
The Magic looks very sexy(if you can call any phone that), and it would be the one I'd consider, if there was no iPhone.
My friend is not sure of what device to go with next, as he's leaving the '3' network here in the UK and wants a super-touchscreen device. I told him that his choices are either Magic or iPhone - ignore the rest. :D

Paid apps only just launched yesterday on the Android Marketplace for the UK and Android 1.5 [Cupcake] (which is the OS on the Magic).

I'm really quite surprised how many apps there are in the store. It's still probably a little behind the Apple App Store, but I think most people would be amazed by how much there is. Don't forget, this is only going to start growing quicker as the number of handset manufacturers and carriers with Android handsets grows.

Desktop widgets (3rd party) are also new in 1.5. There's a few good ones already, really looking forward to seeing what devs do with this.

syncing

Hi all. I am having to give up my i-phone as the 02 signal where I live is a nightmare. Have got a HTC magic delivered today. How do I sync it to my i-cal, i-photo, address book and contacts etc? Thanks

The Magic is a sweet looking phone, espically the white. I'd venture towards Anderiod if AT&T offered it.

Yes, unlike 2/3rds of the people who post, I actually have never had problems with AT&T in both St. Louis and Denver.

I can certainly see the appeal if you make full use of google's services. Personally, I love gmail but am not wild about their calendar or contact solutions (especially contacts... so unpolished and un-user-friendly... totally unlike most of what google does); I much prefer OS X's ical and address book.

i think the best option would be to start using google apps if you dont already. put your contacts into gmail and sync your ical with google calendar using caldav. not sure about the photos but maybe doubletwist would be useful.

Honestly not too sure since I haven't had to find out. The e-mail will be simple as you just set it up with IMAP. The rest I don't know. As ruinfx says, you'll have an easier "just works" experience if you start using Google services.

There's a music player built in, and lots of different ones you can download for free or at a cost from the Market. I haven't actually tried any of them yet.

In terms of synching from iTunes you should be able to use Media Sync.

Hi,

Salling here. I'd be happy to make the Magic compatible, but I need your help to do so, as the Magic is not available for purchase here yet.

Basically, I need the phone's USB product ID. To get this information, connect the phone in mass storage mode (so that it shows up as a drive in Finder). Then open System Profiler, and check under the USB node, for the Magic. You'll find the product ID in the bottom-right view.

I need a couple of you to do this, as it's possible they're using multiple USB product IDs (as was the case with the G1).

Please email this info to support@salling.com, and I'll make sure your phone is supported soon.

Best.

I see the HTC magic isn't listed as compatible yet, I assume it will be in the future..

i'm sorry, but I'm just planning on buying one. but, as it is going to cost around 450 euros, I wanted to make sure that syncing would be pretty painless, otherwise I would go the Iphone route... and the release here ( belgium) is two months from now. also, your app looks perfect, I will probably buy it if I get the phone!

HTC Magic is going to be my next phone, it seems to do things with similar elegance to the iPhone yet does more and has more freedom over how you choose to sync media with it.

I love my iPhone but I need to be able to sync it with Linux as I can't afford a Mac Pro.

I'd probably take it if there wasn't an iPhone, but the iPhone still takes my cake.

I just love the simplicity of the iPhone. Not only in terms of applications, but it also looks simple. A nice, clean, awesome looking phone with a slick UI. I don't think the Magic can touch that, even if it works well.

So, as someone heavily immersed in Google services, I'm still not exactly tempted. Android needs to be smoothed out a bit more and have more of a slick UI. I just don't think it resembles the smoothness of the normal Apple UI. Though I am envious of the notification system.

Enjoy the phone, though. That's just me. I guess that's why there's so many phones - one for everyone! :D

edesignuk, I'm thinking on getting one iPhone 3GS or an HTC Magic with Android, but I read somewhere that HTC Magic does not have multi touch capabilities, and that scares me a bit. What do you think, anyway, of the touch screen of the HTC Magic?

One more thing: What about the App Market of Android? Is there apps for instant messaging (MSN Messenger, Skype, etc.) and for other useful things?

You can enable multi-touch on the G1, I did on mine. I am sure it will be available on the Magic.

Yes it has about the same level of aps as the iphone. Not games, but applications. All instant messengers are supported out of the box on the G1, no additional software is needed. I assume it will be the same on the Magic

Multi-touch isn't a feature. It doesn't restrict the device at all though. What is multi-touch good for on a phone anyway? All it means is you have to use two hands to operate it. Pretty stupid on a phone really when you think about it. It's cool, but pointless.

Yup, there's apps for all that sort of stuff. You can browse the Android Market here.

I bought an HTC Magic as I wait for my backordered 3GS Rogers and replacement 3G from Apple.

It would be great if I could use my own headphones with it instead of these crappy ones. Wish Rogers had put an adapter in the box.

The suggestions are useful instead of just auto correction, exchange works pretty good. The customization is what makes it a cool phone, I just wish the touch screen or the software felt as responsive as a 3G or 3GS.

I would have probably just cancelled my upgrade if it came with an adapter in the box, don't care about storage as microsd is cheap.

I think that HTC Hero will be the one to watch.
