Yeah, 2 days battery life sounds... not really possible if you're using it as a phone. I burned through 3/4 of the battery today using it for a few hours while talking on the phone portion.

As far as updates go, the only people that care are the people who root the living crap out of their devices anyway. The average Android buyer has no clue about Jelly Bean and 4.1 vs 4.2 etc etc. So when the One stops being supported, I'll just root it with Cyanogenmod (if not way before).

I leave power saver mode on, and admittedly I use power intensive apps rarely (Read: A little bit of Real Racing). It's primarily my alarm clock, music when getting ready in the morning, email client, IM & social media hub as well as using it for some casual browsing. Other apps get used, but they're generally not too complex, such as to find airline prices etc.

I've been seriously impressed by the battery in the HTC One. Really heavy users will always be within 10 feet of a power cable anyway, battery life is only really an issue for those where the battery life is only enough to get you part way through a day when you have no opportunity to charge it up.

Right, usage case is everything. Power saver mode may indeed help. I should try that, too.

Seriously, I wish the camera weren't such poop, though. I'm not sure what anandtech were thinking when they praised the camera so much...

So I couldn't resist...

Nokia Lumia 928, HTC One, iPhone 5.

Image

The only way to truly know is to have them all, right? My wife thinks I'm insane. However, she gets it. :D

I can say this: Windows Phone 8 is sorely lacking in hardware (1280x768 pentile display, really? On a flagship device?), and apps.

The HTC One is an incredible phone. Now owning it I just wish iOS 6/7 were on it.

The 468 ppi HTC One positively DESTROYS the iPhone 5's 326 ppi Retina display. Having them both for a day now it's clear Apple needs to step up the resolution. When you have small text (e.g. the desktop http://www.nyt.com), the HTC One just shines. The small text is perfectly formed and not "jagged" like on the iPhone. Just... amazing.

And the sound. Oh. My. Goodness. The speakers on the HTC One (I know I said it before) are simply incredible. Better than iPhone, better than iPad. I'm truly not sure I've heard speakers this good on any phone OR tablet.

If you guys have any questions, feel free. I'm in geek heaven right now. :D

You are living my dream haha. My wife is not as understanding about my tech needs. I am debating on switching from my iPhone 5 to the HTC one though and would like to know, over time which phone do you use most overall and which phone do you reach for for this purpose/that purpose right now and why. I'm on the fence still after the 100's of posts Ive read. I know app quality is better on iPhone but does it really matter how nice it looks and fluid it is when the android version has more app capabilities? On the other side I know android has all these extra capabilities but does it all really get used that much in practice and is it worth the trade off of stability and my tablet not talking to my iPhone and MacBook? So many variables. Like I said keep posted on which phone you find yourself using as a daily driver as the newness wears off.

I can already tell you I'm probably going to stick with my iPhone 5. :)

I love the HTC One. There's no doubt in my mind it's the best phone out there for MY needs:

1.) Super-res display, without pentile nonsense.
2.) Best sound out there.
3.) Super speedy
4.) Great build quality, rivaled only by Apple's manufacturing processes.

But, I'm so heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem. I suppose if I can figure out AirPlay alternatives and iMessage alternatives etc, I can probably make it work, but heck - even Words with Friends just plain sucks on Android (laggy, ugly mess). It also sucks on Windows Phone 8, but that's another story.

In any case, I wish wish wish the HTC One were the iPhone 6, somehow. But it's not.

Plus I love being able to use my phone with one hand, which you can't do with the One.

But I love the One!

But I love my iPhone!

*sigh*....

I'll just add this..the stuff you miss is what eventually gets you to switch back. I done this many times myself. When you first switch, everything is nice about the phone. You love the hardware, the screen, the newness. Once the device becomes just a device, you start to miss the stuff you loved / took for granted on iOS / iphone. I eventually just go back to the iphone. For me imessage is big, love the group chat. I also like the layout / features of certain apps better in iOS vs android. It may be small things, but these are the things I mainly use my phone for.

Thought it was just me, I had the htc one for a while and ended switching back for the iPhone 5. call it what you want, but there is just something about ios that gets me to come back. Don't get me wrong the htc one is the best phone on the market but like the saying goes....different strokes for different folks:D

Hehe thanks. :)

-----

I reached a conclusion! I was right! I'm sticking with iPhone 5! This is just a jumble of thoughts...

I'm back to the iPhone 5. I just don't like Android. The apps are a mess, the interface is a mess (even moving apps to folders is inconsistent with stock 4.2.2). And then the typical web-page freezing etc.. It also lacks the silky smoothness of iOS+iPhone 5. Pretty sad this old dual core phone can pwn any Android device. And Plex doesn't work with a smooth frame-rate, which is just another nail for me, despite workarounds with file managers etc (ES File Explorer + MX Player is a nice combo).

I can also use my iPhone 5 with one hand. I love the res and audio of the HTC. It's amazing. But I'm giving up all ergonomics for it. Others are used to it so they're getting the best phone in terms of hardware.

Sigh...

I don't even know what I want anymore. Maybe Apple was right. Maybe 4" displays are the best?

I also wanted to mention... There's something about Android that makes it so that I don't want to use my phone. iOS is so inviting - from the slickness of the UI to the font style in Safari. It just all works so cohesively. I knew I was done with Android today when I picked up the HTC One while lying in bed, and struggled to unlock it with my right hand (the power button is on the left side at the top, grr!), and then couldn't even reach on the screen where I wanted to tap a link. Then, web pages were freezing on me or just not working:

e.g. open this page on the HTC One. Scrolling up and down is broken until all the ads show!

http://www.forbes.com/sites/jeffber...-say-infuriating-flaw-is-a-feature-not-a-bug/

And then for some reason if there's a photo, and you touch it while scrolling, the screen refuses to accept scroll commands unless you touch text areas and scroll. Gaaaah!

It's just a myriad of things... I guess it came down to primarily for me - the things I use are apps, and the apps have to be easy to use. With the iPhone 5 the apps are the best, and it's easy to use because the screen is smaller and everything is so much smoother, UI-wise. I've almost dropped the One trying to hold it in positions possible for one hand. And I have huge hands.

Bah... I'm jealous of that screen and speakers and... I think that's about it.

iOS 7 it is, then. The iPhone+iOS is like... coming home to something comforting and warm. The HTC One+Android is like... going out to an awesome party that's little out of its depth, - things don't go quite as planned, - but it's still fun to experience for a little while. But only a little while.

(I still love you, HTC - I miss your PPI - the TRUE Retina display)

------

On a side-note, I think I decided that even at 4.7", the HTC One is tablet (or phablet or whatever the heck you want to call it). How do we determine tablet/phablet vs phone? I think it should be ability to use easily in one hand. I know some people can't use the iPhone 5 incredibly easily in one hand (that top right corner for right-handers can be a tad tricky), but it's still quite possible. The HTC One is just a nightmare in one hand for many, many things (try bringing up the tabs page in Chrome, for example, - or pulling down the notification bar - impossible without shimmying the phone in the hand and risking dropping it..).

I'm so glad iOS 7 Control Center is accessed from the bottom of the screen. Will be so easy to get to. Yay Apple.

I can well understand many of your concerns. That said, I chose this particular point of yours to compare it with my experience. Very early on, I replaced two main defaults apps with others available on the play store. For email, I chose aquamail (much better than default and the equivalent on iOS) and Dolphin as my browser. Using Dolphin I went to that link on my One and I saw nothing of the sort in terms of scrolling being broken until the ads show. It was fast and smooth prior to all the ads loading.

My point is simply that I acknowledge default Android apps (whether manufacturer specific or generic Android) are often inferior to iOS equivalents. However, there are several cases (as I gave above) of apps on the play store that will give a superior experience to the equivalent on iOS.

So I admit off the bat, I'm an Apple fan. Not a fanboy, but a fan indeed.

In terms of phones, I've owned the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and currently I use an iPhone 5. I upgrade immediately, like a good Apple soldier should.

My neighbor yesterday asked me which phone he should buy. He has been using an iPhone 4 up till this point, and he told me he wants a larger screen, - larger than even the iPhone 5.

Given that the Galaxy S4 is not available yet, I recommended the HTC One, since by all accounts it's the best Android device actually out there in the wild.

He complied, and brought home the One today. I got to play with it tonight, and here are my thoughts...

1.) This is the very first Android device that truly rivals Apple in terms of design. While the back is just a tad busy for an Apple device, the build quality is absolutely fantastic. This is without doubt, the best-designed Android phone on the market.

2.) The screen is absolutely stunning. Yes, it's even more stunning than the iPhone 5 display. I opened up the New York Times full site, and text was even MORE readable on this display, even aside from the size difference between the two. I know people talk about Retina this and Retina that. Fact is, for me at least, I still want a sharper display, and when you put the HTC One next to the iPhone 5, what I've wanted in terms of PPI is right there, easily visible. It's truly stunning, and being NOT an AMOLED screen, it comes without all the deficiencies inherent in that tech (blue whites, lack of white brightness, over-saturated colors etc). The HTC One has 469 ppi, vs 326 ppi on the iPhone 4/4S/5. The difference, to me, is as obvious as a smack in the face. I love it. As far as I'm concerned, the HTC One has the true Retina display.

3.) The speakers raise the bar for what a phone can do. No more channeling sound to the front by cupping your hand around the bottom of the phone when watching movies/YouTube etc. The HTC One has the best speakers I've ever heard on a phone. Two speakers, front facing = game changer for the phone multimedia space.

4.) The ui responsiveness has vastly improved on these devices compared to the previous generation. I've had extensive playtime with my other neighbor's Galaxy Nexus, and the HTC One absolutely destroys the Galaxy Nexus in terms of response. Scrolling up and down web-pages is as close to Apple-like as it gets now, with almost imperceptible lag when doing so. Rotating the screen takes just milliseconds now. Everything is just so smooth.

Just a few cons from my time with the One:

5.) Apps-wise, no comparison. The iPhone has the HTC, and any Android device - soundly beaten.

6.) The One's power button is over on the top left vs top right on the iPhone 5. I grab my phone out of my left pocket with my left hand, so the power-button location is easily hit on the top right. iPhone wins that one.

So what's an Apple lover to do?

I'm torn. So, so torn. I absolutely love the HTC One. I really do. I'm also heavily invested in the Apple world, with numerous Macs, Apple accessories etc littered about my house and office.

But... my oh my is the HTC One a game-changer on the Android front. There is absolutely something to be said for the premium feel the One offers that the Galaxy S4 simply will never do (based on my plastic-y experience when toying with the S3).

Anyway, for those with no tether to Apple or Google, I highly, HIGHLY recommend spending some time with the HTC One. It's quite possibly the best phone on the market right now.

For the first time ever since handling many, many Android phones: Apple - the ball's in your court.

(Picture taken with my iPhone 5, of course!)

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
Did you mean App store apps or stock apps, the HTC ONE stock apps, apart from camera, some amazing features, just the design of them I don't like, and for the Play Store apps, yeah, Google Play, has more apps now, but Apple still has an edge on quality, and cross-platform apps, Apple also has an edge (apart from some like Myfitnesspro, or all Google Apps).
THE POWER BUTTON (My father has a HTC ONE, coming from iPH5, and I have a Nexus 4), and the power button I get very annoyed, was the phone designed for lefties, or following old iPod Touch designs? I don't know. I believe the Nexus 4/most android phones placing of the power buttons (on right side, near the top of the phone), is perfect, it is where my thumb rests, especially on larger screens. Followed by the iPh placing, and then HTC ONE, plus it is, not clicky enough, it seems, hard to press. I like the phone, and you, my friend have hit the nail on its head.

Absolutely. But there's a bit more to it than that, of course. I use Chrome as it integrates well with my Google experience, - synching my bookmarks etc etc. It's the same reason I use Safari on iOS over any other browser. Being able to see my desktop tabs is another bonus of Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android. I can indeed do that with Dolphin, but it means yet another extension to be installed..

Dolphin is a decent browser, of course. I've used it some on iOS and on Android. But when will it be updated to remove the menu button at the bottom of the screen, taking up space? When will basic web pages with YouTube videos work, like this?

http://kotaku.com/lets-watch-other-people-play-cube-world-681925086

That page I can't even get it to load videos on with Dolphin... Ideally I'd like the videos to open with YouTube and then when I'm done, it goes back to the browser. Maybe I'm just dumb and can't figure it out, but Dolphin opens all YouTube videos in the Dolphin app itself, and it doesn't seem to work all that well...

http://www.engadget.com/2013/07/06/video-claims-to-show-budget-iphone/

^ That video works perfectly on iOS Safari, and I can't make it work in Dolphin, as another example.

Thank you for the compliment! :)

I think you'll never please everyone with all phones, but it does appear (to someone like me who gets more and more frustrated with Apple as each day goes by) that iOS is VERY thoughtfully designed. Sure, up till now it has indeed been missing simple features like shortcuts to X and Y, and widgets etc etc. But what IS there, in terms of software AND hardware - is very smartly designed. The more I use the HTC One, the more I appreciate the mute switch on the side of my iPhone 5, for example.

I really can't wait for iOS 7 now. It's not all roses (the colors are a little in-your-face, for one thing). But I think it will make the experience a lot better, and a lot more Android-like, without the downsides of Android. :)

I guess its just a matter of preferrence. Good thing I haven't invested much on apple products and I can move to any platform whenever I want. I love the iOS smoothness and other stuff but I also like the openess of android. There was no really good phone with superb quality before the HTC one (I hope more awesome build quality from here on) that's why when the HTC one came out I gotta have it. It's amazing that there are features of this phone that I was not aware of. probably because I was very much closed minded and loved iOS since day 1.

What I love about my HTC one.
-the IR blaster, I can control any TV or player from the One.
-I love the OTG functionality (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoi0ngOU4SE) where in you can any insert flash disk, mouse, keyboards etc. (duh! why do you need to use a keyboard or mouse on your phone lol, I know but I love it specially when I mirror the screen to my HDTV)
-Screen mirroring wired and wirelessly - We have airplay on the iOs but that means I also need to have an AppleTV which sucks because I already have sony bravia.
-Blinkfeed, easy access to your social and news feeds.
-Widgets!!
-Boomsound
-Screen ppi

And all others.

I know Apple will release some goodies soon and I might return to iOS but right now I'm glad I discovered the ONE and still enjoying it.

Need a phone upgrade and the HTC One looks tempting

I have been using the iPhone 4s since it was released and I love IOS. I have been eligible for an upgrade with Verizon since last summer, but when the iPhone 5 was released, I was not all that impressed with it. Sure it had 4G and other upgrades but the screen size was a deal-breaker for me - 1/2 inch longer did not cut it. So I passed on the 5. Now it appears that Apple is about to release either an iPhone 5s or 6, and I am waiting to hear what the specs will be for those models. Above all, I want a larger screen, 4.3 in. at least, but I doubt we will see that until the spring of 2014. My 16 GB memory is filling up so I will probably need to upgrade to 32 GB.
After playing with the HTC One at a Verizon store, I was very impressed with its build quality, speed, sound, design and storage capacity. The One gives you 32 GB of internal memory and 2 GB RAM for $199.99. This is a huge selling point for me because Apple charges another $100 for the 32 GB model and you still only get 1 GB RAM, i.e. $299.99. If the iPhone 5s or 6 does not have a larger screen and charges $100 more for 32 GB, why not opt for the HTC One where I will clearly get more bag for the buck? Since I have not owned an Android device (I have an iPad), the HTC will give me the opportunity to use one for a couple of years. I can always switch back later. These are my thoughts at present.
