Except for the fact that USB devices do not require to be powered via USB nor do iPhones, iPads or iPods require to be powered via USB in order to sync via USB. Using any USB hub that is unable to power the iPad will not result into an iPad continuously connecting and disconnecting. It'll connect and sync but the iPad won't charge and it will explicitly say so (charging disabled). USB can be used as a data only connection. They added power solely for convenience. If the device requires to be powered via USB and won't receive the proper amount it will either not charge, not function at all and/or OS X will give you an error message telling you that the current hooked up device cannot be powered and thus won't function. None of this is the case with any of the iOS devices.

Or simply put: power has got absolutely NOTHING to do with this at all.

And no you do not need to buy a Thunderbolt dock. Just a simple and cheap USB dock or even extension cable will suffice.

The problem is USB3 not being able to correctly detect the devices on the other end of the cable which results into a USB port going up and down and that leads to iPads/iPhones/etc. rapidly connecting and disconnecting. This is a known issue and in some cases it is caused by something else (read: hardware defect and for that you need to get the machine fixed). If using another cable/hub doesn't work and the device works fine on another machine then the only thing one can do is to return the machine to the seller to have it fixed. Especially in the EU and in the Netherlands where we have additional consumer rights concerning warranty.

Thanks for your input!

The one thing i find so strange is that my iPhone 5 and 6 work perfectly fine with my iMac, but only the iPads are the problem, and external HDD's with USB 3.0 also work perfectly fine, so it would be weird if its a USB 3.0 problem because the other products work fine? i'll think i go buy me a hub... it must be a powered hub, right?

Not necessarily but you can't go wrong with a powered one ;) I'd always get the powered one as you can either use it with or without the additional power adapter.

As somebody else mentioned, it isn't surprising that your iPhones work but your iPads don't. Your iMac isn't supplying enough power to charge your iPad. Getting a powered hub might be a workaround for the issue, but you should still bring the Mac in for service if its under warranty. The issue is either a logic board problem, or it might be a power supply problem.

Just going out on left field here, you don't have a printer plugged into your iMac do you? Sometimes the software communication between the printer and the computer can interrupt USB connections for higher powered devices. I've only every seen that occur on PCs though, not Macs.

Thanks again everybody! I went out and got a powered USB 3.0 hub, and this ''fixes'' the problem, but you are right, i need to bring the device in at some point, because this isn't normal

I understand that the iPad needs more power then an iPhone, but an external HDD needs the same power as an iPad or am i incorrect? Because my external HDD's work fine.

No printer plugged in my USB ports, got a wifi printer :D

Then you are clearly not understanding the problem. There is no issue relating to powering or charging the device. The problem is with the data connection only since the iPad does not connect to the iMac correctly. It goes into a connect-disconnect loop. iTunes will continuously give you error messages that it can't connect with the device.

You do not need to have a powered connection with the iPad either. Power is only needed to charge the device, NOT to connect it to iTunes. That's why the iPad will work with any unpowered USB hub. iOS even has the special ability that when it detects the other end cannot deliver enough power to charge the device it will automatically shut off the charging. It will also inform the user about this by putting "charging disabled" in the menubar near the battery icon.

The problem is solely the logic board as power has got nothing to do with it.

Also a data-only issue and one far more likely to cause the issue we are discussing here (not being able to connect the iPad). If you have a couple of devices and quite a lot of data going between them you can into these issues. The same seems to apply to USB3.0 and bluetooth because they can interfere (bluetooth mouse stuttering when you transfer something to your USB3.0 disk and/or a slower data connection to that disk when using the bluetooth mouse).

Thanks again everybody! I went out and got a powered USB 3.0 hub, and this ''fixes'' the problem, but you are right, i need to bring the device in at some point, because this isn't normal
You could but I seriously doubt they'll able to fix the issue. We've seen it with various USB3.0 devices since it came to market.

USB allows to power device but that will be devices that won't draw that much power like a mouse, keyboard, up to a smartphone. The big 3.5" harddisks require more power than USB can deliver which is why the large external disks have their own power adapter and thus USB has no effect on these. The smaller 2.5" notebook disks can be powered via USB although some require a bit more and thus need 2 USB connections. The iPad is a rather unusual device because it needs far more power than USB allows and also more than those 2.5" disks. According to the USB specifications you'd never be able to power an iPad with USB up to version 3.0. You can with USB 3.1 Gen 2 as it can provide 100W (the sole reason why it is in 3.1 would be devices like the iPad and the ability to use 1 port for both data and power on an ultrabook). Apple did something out of spec here. That's why you need "special" USB equipment that supports charging something like an iPad, if it can't then the iPad simply won't charge.

Hi Daantje... is there still no solution? I suffer the same problem and am unable to get the photo's of my ipad!
The ipad has no more memory space but i cannot move the data from ipad to Macbook.

My Iphone works fine connected to my macbook.

I think this has nothing to do with hardware because i remember this working fine. It started when i emptied my macbook and then rebooted it with time machine.
Anyway i think its a software issue.... i don't understand al this USB3 etc talk?! It worked before so why won't it now!!!!!!!!!

Thank you all so much for your many helpful responses!

I placed a USB 2.0 hub in my iMac 5K, but my iMac won't recognize any device :( It's a trust USB 2.0 hub with 4 ports but non of them work on my iMac

The problem still exist, i tried it al.. the SMC reset, reset permissions, disc permissions, delete the ipads and begin from scratch, but non outcome.

My system logs show this after the connect/disconnect happens:

Thanks again everybody! I went out and got a powered USB 3.0 hub, and this ''fixes'' the problem, but you are right, i need to bring the device in at some point, because this isn't normal

I understand that the iPad needs more power then an iPhone, but an external HDD needs the same power as an iPad or am i incorrect? Because my external HDD's work fine.

No printer plugged in my USB ports, got a wifi printer :D

LOL, you are clearly from The Netherlands because you're very very stubborn!
Your problem has been answered on the 29th of August by marzer,
your iMac clearly has a hardware fault which needs to be fixed whether you use a powered USB-hub or not!

So please be sensible for once and not so darn stubborn, and bring your iMac to a Apple Service Provider and get it fixed!

I have an iMac 5k, i7, 4gb Video since march and have the same problem, Apple already switched the iMac with a new one. Also the same problem. Have done a lot of tests and have send lots and lots of logs to apple, also with the latest updates El Capitain and ios 9, i still have the problem. Sometimes it works fine, but it always returns. The strange thing is that it works fine within Vmware, within OSX, when closing Vmware it imideately returns.
You can solve it (workaround): mount your ipads using an USB hub (i have one for 2 euro 'at the Action' for the dutch readers), your ipad will not charge, but you can use itunes.
A friend of mine has an 21" imac and they have the same. So it is not limited to the 5k iMac.
Apple still has no solution, but i still have contact with support and sending them logs.

I personally think Apple used sh***ty cheap USB controllers/chips in the latest iMacs.
What used to work in my 3.4Ghz i7 (2011) is now flaky, unreliable, sometimes stuttering.
Printer connects/disconnects.Headset issues etc.
Reminds me of the 2009 era when Apple had the FW chip disaster due to switching to a cheaper supplier.
Various firmware fixes in the end.

i send you a message. Are you also from the netherlands? Can you contact me?

Did apple switch your iMac within the 14 day return window or after that period?

I now have a new problem..

If i connect an external HDD with USB 3.0 to my iMac it takes 15 minutes to transfer a file size of 2 GB, while my old macbook 2010 transfers it within 2 minutes with USB 2.0!!

Before it went perfectly... i reset the SMC but it remains slow...

It goes max 20mb/s if i'm lucky..

It was around 2 to 3 weeks when i contact Apple Support about this issue.

You can check your disk with 'Blackmagic Disk Speed Test' to verify the speed of the disk.
Did you tried to connect the disk via a USB Hub.
I did not have any issues with disks on the USB.

Yes i used black magic and the write spead from Mac to USB 3.0 is about max 20 mb/s ( I use a powered usb 3.0 hub but if I plug the external drive direct in the Mac it's also max 20 mb/s

Many brands suffer from it, not only Apple and they are buying from various sources. That makes it less likely that it is the controllers Apple bought and more likely it is the protocol itself. We've also seen this with the bluetooth-USB3.0 interference on various machines such as the Mac mini. Proper shielding made a huge difference. Using high quality and properly shielded wires also make a lot of difference in how USB3.0 behaves (especially in performance). Seems like they pushed it a bit too far.

Are you sure you bought a USB3.0 hub because the speeds you are reporting are more in the USB2.0 realm.

Which is no different when hardware or the protocol is the issue. Or in other words: that behaviour can mean anything. You need to do some more testing before you can say anything sensible about it.

Unfortunately it really is a USB 3.0 hub with a blue insert :( also if i unplug the hub, the speed is really slow and is more of a USB 2.0 speed

I've actually found the solution!

Having tried all the ideas posted here, nothing worked, BUT my problem was instantly resolved by doing the following:

1. Go to: System Preferences -> Network -> iPhone USB (on left menu)
2. Uncheck: Disable unless needed

Voila! I assume it's to do with the instant hotspot feature, which makes sense as the logs are full of network related issues when the connect/disconnect occurs.

@daantje22 I have the same issue on my iMac 5K with an iPad Air (Lightning-connector) and an old iPhone (iPod-connector). Connects, disconnects, connects, disconnects. I think it may be an iTunes bug as I see people on YouTube running Windows with a similar issue with their iPhone.

Buy a can of compressed air (handy to have anyway; don't shake it!) and try blowing out all your ports and connectors etc. If problem remains call Apple. They may request you restore your Mac so be prepared for this. You may need to have your Mac backed up using Time Machine so I'd do that now—this is something we all need to do anyway so it's a good idea regardless.

Best of luck solving this.

Hello All

Thanks daantje22 for starting this thread, I have been putting off trying to resolve this for ages.

I have a fix that currently works for me.

I purchased an Anker Ultra Slim 4-Port USB 3.0 Data Hub
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00Y25XFGK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I needed additional ports anyway and this Hub received many great reviews. It has also resolved my fast connection/disconnections with my iPad pro.

I know it is annoying to have to buy another piece of kit to do a simple STANDARD task but hey, life is short and dealing with Apple support more than once is not worth the time spent.

The images I have provided show the config behind my iMac 5K and that the iPad pro is still charging when plugged into the Anker Ultra Slim 4-Port USB 3.0 Data Hub.

Good luck.
Dankie Daantje22 miskien kan jy my swak Afrikaans verstaan, jou engels is baie goed ;-)

I bought a 2014 iMac 5K last month and it had the same issue. I did an exchange, and the new one does it too. I thought I had it narrowed down to only when I had my USB 3.0 SSD attached at the same time as the iPad Air 2, but tonight with nothing but the iPad connected, it did it as soon as I plugged in the iPad (which was down to 20%). I think I'm going to hook up my Thunderbolt 2 dock, or just use my external USB charger and sync wirelessly.

Sadly I had the same issue. My fix was to purchase an external USB 3.0 hub... see my thread above for the full story.

I have not had the issues since and use it every day. I connect and disconnect it regularly without any hassles
