I appreciate all the extra tips guys, thanks. Certainly helpful for me, or anyone who might be in a similar situation in the future.

I'm not really that big a gamer, about an hour per day or every couple of days is all I do on my mac. But still I'm sure it was this strain which pushed the card over the edge.

I'll report back when I hear from Apple for anyone who may be interested.

Any further suggestions or comments are still welcome if you can shed some new light on this issue.

Thanks.

hope you get it replaced/repaired sooooon by apple under some sort of extended warranty,as i know how hard it is when your baby doesn`t work and no you dont need to give up gaming on it once its repaired
you can play your hour or two each day , just remember to put the game on lower settings .. i mean just a lower resolution 1024x768 and maybe disable some graphic features like shadows , this will help a lot to take strain of the graphic card , and it does not effect to much the gaming experience
i know people (some addicted ones) who play cod on netbooks ,when they are out of reach of their main computer , so everything is possible with the right settings and enthusiasm

"Dear Liam,
You are scheduled for a Genius Bar appointment."

So they want me to bring it in... No mention of cost or anything, just bring it in. That's all I got.

Is this appointment going to be free? Or am I just going through the normal pricey procedure?

Appointments at the Genius Bar are free. They run tests, determine the problem and give you a quote if you're not under warranty. Applecare would have been useful as it covers you for events like this. My experience of out-of-warranty Apple Store repairs in the UK is that they are cheaper than Apple resellers. They are also very efficient. In your case, I'm not sure how flexible they are likely to be. You're only just out of warranty so it's worth asking to speak to someone more senior as they have more discretion.

Just an update. I managed to get looked at, they could not work it out at all and had no clues.

So they've decided to replace most things in my iMac, new logic board, new 24" display, new graphics card etc... Total cost: £1086

Luckily I was only 29 days out of warranty so they did this for free, I'm very lucky.

Liam, I'm really, really pleased that you got sorted out and for free.

but please don't make out like Apple did you any favours. UK law is different to the US and if they had made you pay you should have gone to small claims court with the sale of goods act (6 years max liability) and claim defective from new.

no judge in the land would accept that a desktop computer costing £1k+ that doesn't move should fail after 13 months.

I GUARANTEE that! Probably why Apple did it for nada in the end.

Trust me I've been in there and had them over a barrel with other products.

another +1 it was your graphics card. I am happy for you they fixed it for free!
However what the above poster mentions is correct. In the Netherlands there are growing conceirns and cases regarding Apple ignoring european and Dutch law in their warrenty policies.
