Resurrecting this discussion with a resounding applause. The new 9.7 iPad Pro DOES fix the issue of auto contrast!

Three years of complaining finally paid off.

Great! So I know for a fact that the 12.9" Pro doesn't display this issue, so it's good to hear the 9.7" Pro doesn't, either!

Its very nice. Haven't been this geeked over an iPad since the original and the iPad 2. (I've owned them all except the red headed step-child iPad 3) This is, IMO, the full realization of the iPad hardware. I was wanting 4 speakers since the original Air

This bug has irritated me nearly every day for the past...what?...four years or so??? This is such great news. Placing my order for the 9.7" iPad Pro now...

Can you confirm that this issue is resolved in iPad Pro series?

Read it somewhere that 9.7" still experiences this issue.
Anyone with 9.7" device can confirm this for me?
Planning to upgrade from air 2 to pro 9.7" just for this issue.
Thanks

Yep. I'm still seeing the issue. It seems to be less so, but still noticeable (particularly when you touch the screen to bring up playback controls during a dark scene in a movie or television show).

Argh, this is such bad news!
I consume a lot of media on my ipad air 2, and I cannot stand this dynamic contrast issue anymore.
Was hoping this was solved in the new series but I guess not.
I see that this issue exists since IPad 4. Clearly, Apple won't be fixing this 'feature'.
Gutted.

I had the iPad 4 and now have the 12.9" iPad Pro. With the iPad 4, the dynamic contrast "feature" could get so annoying. I have yet to notice it on my 12.9", but I still think its doing dynamic contrast adjustments

If its there on the 9.7 its BARELY noticeable. With every other iPad it was very obvious when it boosted dark scenes if you're in a pitch black room. It made watching opening credits of shows and movies unbearable.

Not the same flaw, but on both my Mini 4, my new 9.7" Pro, and my Air 2, I had the "dark corner" effect in the top left. Even as someone who loves playing the iLottery, it's not worth returning (everything else is perfect, and I figure if I'm annoyed by the top left corner, I'm not spending my time wisely).

I watched a couple of movies on a long flight last night. It seems as though the issue is only visible when tapping the iPad to bring up playback controls. Everything was fine during dark scenes/credits...unless I tapped the screen. That's when I'd notice the blacks turn to grey as they did with previous gen iPads. Tap the screen again to hide playback controls...and the greys quickly faded back to black.

Wondering if iOS10 has fixed this issue.
Can someone with Ipad air 2 confirm this?
Sorry, I'm a noob and don't know how to upgrade iOS as a beta tester.

Is this a software or firmware based issue? I thought the reason this discussion lasted 34 pages was that it was a hardware issue?

I am adding to this, because as of iOS 13, this is still happening when I watch Netflix/Prime video, any video fullscreen with subtitles. I'm using an iPad Air 2 (iPad5,3).

This is now ALSO happening if you rent a movie on iTunes/Apple TV app on a MacBookPro12,1 running macOS Catalina 10.15.2. Watching a movie/show in fullscreen with subtitles triggers a sharp change in color/contrast, until the subtitles disappear again.

Why aren't more people complaining about this? This has been an issue for YEARS now. This is absolutely absurd coming from a company like Apple. Are their engineers ****ing blind?? Deaf? Maybe both??

Unfortunately they don't care...until you file a class action suite. There are much more serious hardware problems with iPad screens, like light bleeding and touch failures, Apple never fixed anything. They even deny replacements and charge you for those ones. People are complaining for years all around these forums, Amazon, everywhere.

Edit: sorry, responded to an ancient post

I posted a couple of pages back (post #815) the reasons why I believe it's a power-saving feature. I don't believe it would be in Apple's interests to 'fix' it, or even have it be easily disabled by users.

All ipads have this issue, as far as I know. I have Pro 10.5 and I have this issue too. But if the new ipad pro 2020 doesn't have it, I'm gonna buy it. But how can I be sure?...
I owned the iPad 4 and own an iPad Pro 2015. The issue that is described here with the 4 did not exist on newer iPads. Read the original post
