I have a 10.5" pro, but actually Im thinking of returning it, and just buying an Air 2 as an upgrade from my Air 1.

Plan would be to hold the Air 2 for a year and than pass to my wife and upgrade to the 2018 iPad Pro.

Our usage is browsing, email and some basic apps, we do experience Safari reloads and slow apps loading, but i assume the Air 2 would resolve a lot of those problems?

My Pro is costing just over 1100 Euros with a smart cover, and it doesn't seem worth it to me right now.

Just wondering does that plan make sense. I'd sell the Air 1 we have for around 200 Euros, buy an Air 2 64 Gb for 419, so a decent upgrade for 200 Euros.

If saving money is a priority then that certainly makes sense, but I would quit messing with your 10.5 otherwise you'll get too used to it and the Air 2 will seem like a pretty steep downgrade!
Gotcha, but so many people sing the praises of the Air 2 screen and experience on here, I'm actually tempted to try it.

It sounds like 85% of the experience for 40% of the cost.

And money is always a priority ! :)

Only you know what you can't and can afford, not sure what you want people to tell you

Can you get a decent price on a 9.7 pro? Tons of people offloading them, and I would think some good clearance/refurb prices too..

id opt for that over Air 2, for screen alone (p3, less reflective) and clear and loud 4-speakers even if no other interest in pencil/Smart KB.

The air 2 screen is still quite nice though and a8x is no slouch, but a9-series will be the standard soon with the 2017 iPad so if it were me I'd want at least that for peace of mind.

iPhone SE, 2017 iPad, 6s, all using A9. Wouldn't wanna do something before that unless it were a steal of a price

My wife has an Air 2, mine the pro 10.5 both have black smart covers.
Ignoring the bezel she picked up my 10.5 and after using it for 10 mins, commented why is yours better ?
It's hard to go back

Let me just add to this:

Aside from searching for a sale price in your situation, My Air 2 runs stellar since day one and iOS 10 only made it better. Before the new Pro's arrived, it was the best iPad to date and is still runs so efficiently and I refuse to sell my Air 2 (It's in mint condition) and it's one of those products you come across that just won't sacrifice performance. It's still my favorite iPad and I can't wait to see what iOS 11 can do for it. If you decide to purchase an Air 2, you won't regret it, even if the new iPad Pro supersedes it.

Great advice. You should be able to pick up a Pro 9.7 cheap now and it’s a better device then the Air 2

I think you should keep 10.5 iPP and you should get used to it. Air 2 is a beast but it is very old now. I don't know if Apple can fix if Air 2 get damaged?

I was considering between the Air 2, new iPad 2017 and iPad Pro 10.5". I was looking for an upgrade from my previous iPad 3. I ended up picking the Air 2 as my main usage from an iPad is still for web browsing and media consumption.

I felt the Pro will be an overkill for my usage and the price doesn't justify for what I will be using it for. So it was down to the Air 2 and new iPad 2017, I went for the older model for its laminated display despite it having an older A8X chip. The display is just much better to look at.

I still have the iPad Air 1, but looking to upgrade to the iPad Pro 12.9. But decided to just stick to the 10.5. I am selling my iPad Air 1 now, but I don't really mind keeping it if nobody buys it. It's still a good tablet for some stuff. But getting the 10.5 would up my productivity... a much more robust iPad and the pencil.

If you are looking to save money, I say just wait for next year. Just use that iPad Air 1 for home automation after you get the new iPad Pro (no home button ) next year.

For media consumption, the quad speakers on the 9.7" pro is awesome though.

They are. And that's a distinct difference between the iPad Pro and Air 2, is that iPad Air 2 speakers are Good, but there is some vibration through the aluminum housing at higher volumes, but it's been that way across that model and it's not really an issue.

Exactly. I use my iPad for consumption purposes, and the quad speakers is the number one reason I upgraded from Air 2 to 9.7" Pro (with true tone display being second).

The RAM was the same so it was a pricey decision, as the Air 2 was already so good. But I have never regretted my upgrade.

I see many people recommending the cheaper iPad with 2 speakers if the users' needs are basic and mostly consumption. Just want to share my experience that even for consumption, the Pro makes a huge difference.

It's strange, I see quite a few posts on here where others are saying that the quad speakers are not a selling point or consumers do not care about the sound on an iPad. Where I think that couldn't be farther from the truth, where the iPad is a media device, which transitions into watching movies, playing games and other media, where you want to have immersive Sound. And the iPad Pro delivers.

When the 12.9" Pro came out, I said if they put quad speakers in the Air 3 I'm sold. The 9.7 Pro came along and I upgraded. Everything else was a bonus.

What is the price difference between the Air 2 and the 10.5 Pro?

I like the idea of increased ram, the screen is gorgeous and all in all, the 2017 iPad Pro is a great tablet. It was one that felt complete enough for me to justify buying another one. I'm not knocking the Air 2, but how different is it from the 1? I think the features added in on the iPad Pro are significant that that its worth keeping - Just my $.02

Air 2 has 2GB RAM vs 1GB in Air. A8x vs A7, 8mpx camera vs 5mpx, Air 2 is thinner, lighter, laminated screen and Touch ID. So, a lot different really, but I still think a Pro 9.7 would be better if not wanting the 10.5

The main advantage between Air 1 and 2:
1) 2GB RAM vs 1GB RAM will ensure longer support for iOS updates.
2) Laminated display is just much better to look at.
3) A8X is still pretty powerful despite its age.

I chose to buy an iPad Air 2 over the new iPad 2017 recently.

As someone who had an iPad Air 2 at launch ( 128gb and lte) which I sold last year to help me get an MacBook Pro I can say the 10.5 screen is way better. I love the slightly bigger size and find the colors to be better .

The laminated screen alone is worth it. I had the Air 1 and went through like 7 of those before I gave up and dealt with the dust under the screen . I would got the Pro 9.7 over the Air 2 if you’re planning on keeping it for a while imho.

Fair enough, but doesn't the iPad Pro improve upon #1, and #3?
