On digg a couple of weeks ago was a way to boot into single user mode and reset the passwords.

what i'd do..

find someone with an intel mac, connect via target disk mode, format the mac mini hd and install from some ebay tiger disks.

edit, or you can just start up from the disks holding c... and just format and reinstall...

I'd just image another machine and then put the image onto the other machine.

Failing that the single user solution or booting off another Intel disc and reseting the password.

ok...

I understand that. but what you dont is where did i say that apple didnt own mac?

The other guy was admittedly a bit rude but I think what he was trying to say is that you asked people not to suggest calling Mac because you had already tried that. He was just pointing out that the company you would be calling is not called Mac but called Apple. Of course there was no need to do that because it just wastes time here in the forums but surely you know how some fanatics can be. :)
I think someone suggested this already but not sure. Call 800-sos-appl and tell them that you misplaced your 10.4 installer disc or tell them you bought this thing used but it did not include an install disc. See if they can help by sending you a fulfillment (I think it's called) disc. You might have to pay something but perhaps not more than $20 or so. The other option is to wait it out a month and purchase 10.5 when it comes out. Also, if you are a student, you should be able to get 10.4 at a student discount.

Hope this helps and good luck.

incase no one else said this but are you able to boot into it by holding apple s, for single user mode it mite work for you that way.

One other thing you might try is...

If there is a nearby Apple Store, make an appointment at the genius bar, go in for the appointment, and say you don't have the password and ask if they can just put in a system disc so that you can start from it and reset the password. You can even tell them what happened and if they look up the serial number, they will see that it is in your name. If all you need to do is a password reset, that should not be a big deal.
Really hope this helps and don't worry about that other shmuck.:D:D
Best of luck.

Hi, I just bought a used mac mini intel core duo 1.66ghz, I have no admin password to log onto the thing, I cannot reach the owner because it says his phone is disconnected, I need the password to get on it, I have no Mac OS X install disc's and the ones i do have dont work "witch are panther 10.3.4" I cant order new discs Apple will not send them to me, Im out of options.

If there is anyway you can help me i would appreciete it. But please dont tell me to call mac again or try to get ahold of the owner, those are things that cannot happend, i need some kind of way to reset it, there has to be one somehow!

thanks alot!

take the mini apart. remove 1 stick of ram, start up machine, if that doesn't work, wait 1 month for leopard. or find a friend from work or school, etc that will let you install the software.

good luck

enjoy

If none of the other suggestions work, I would just install a linux of some kind on it, (or maybe even, dare I say, windows *GASP* :p) and wait for 10.5 to come out. At least that way you can use it for the time being. Although I do not know much about installing linux on macs, so this idea might just be crap.

honestly dude, your not welcome in this thread, just leave, ive gotten a lot of great answers thats are getting me close. you can think what you want,

Why is he not welcome in the thread? This is an open forum and I was really glad someone finally came out and wrote what I was thinking from your very first post. I agree with HLDan completely.

I'm not accusing you of anything either but you can certainly see how your situation might arouse suspicions. There's no need to be so defensive.

I can understand him being defensive. He bought a mac (legitimate or not) and got screwed. So he came to a forum thats usually pretty helpful and he got jumped on for typing the wrong name of the company and being told he was stupid for buying the computer without the disks.

Can we all say we didn't step in dog **** some time in our life? To play on that same metaphore, the situation stinks... but i've done silly things too because of my excitement etc.

I think it's a fair request to say help the guy out or just sit on the sidelines, but flaming him is just rude.

I did boot into single user mode, but after that what do i do.

I went to the apple genius bar today at my lunch and they tried to charge me 140$ and they said it could take up to 2 weeks to get finished, I quickly said screw that..

So if i boot into single user mode what do i do after that. can anybody give me a step by step guide. i tried some of the other guides but none of them worked, or maybe they did i just got confused and typed the wrong thing.

thanks for all your help :)

I didn't "flame" the poster nor did the person whose post I was defending.

This is an open public forum in which anyone is allowed to participate and offer their opinions so long as they are not inflammatory personal attacks and stay on topic.

The original poster may be a totally honest individual who got screwed with a password-protected computer he bought on an auction but I have to say the story sounded completely convoluted to me. I've bought hundreds of items on auction and had very few bad experiences and none where I was unable to contact the auctioneer for followup post auction.

There is nothing wrong with offering an honest opinion on these forums. Please leave the moderation to the management.

Alright dude, your bringing nothing but negativity to this thread, Nobody cares on your opinion no one wants to sit here and read people bitchin at people. if you don't have advise or anything that can help THAN DO NOT POST IN THIS THREAD.

And, Not all the people on ebay have the greatest experience and perfect luck like you. Some people get screwed, and i did, and its way out of my hands, just because the person that screwed me over is an ass doesn't mean its my fault so you don't need to talk to me like im committing a crime, Help me with my problem just like everybody else on this thread, I will say it again, DO NOT REPLY if its not advise or something positive to say, Nobody wants to read your ********. We all have better things to do.

I like SaSaSushi's suggestion.

Forum threads are open to anyone with an opinion on the thread topic, and members cannot instruct other members not to post in them.

If you have comments about the Mac Mini issue, your posts are still welcome. However, there have been quite enough posts about who should post here, so further posts of that type will be removed by the moderators.

Did you follow the instructions from this link I gave you earlier? It should work. http://www.hackmac.org/?q=node/4

Yea, I did, I did exactly what it said, But when i would reboot nothing happend, it would go to the login screen like normal, i must of did something wrong, but i tried it so many times.

I got really excited to, it looked like it was working. :D

You obviously haven't been on this site for very long.

Are you stuck at Step 5 or 8?

Did you try to log in using the new account you created? Maybe it's not doing the auto login becuase it has been disabled.

Hi G5Jake, since I haven't done it myself I can't really help you much other than the steps in that link I gave you.

You mentioned that it rebooted and you are stuck. Are you stuck at Step 5 or Step 8 of the instructions from that site http://www.hackmac.org/?q=node/4 ? If you are stuck at Step 8, you can try logging in with the new account which you have created in Step 7.

I did everything that the site said, It didnt work, Are you sure it runs happly with intel macs or does it have to be a certain operating system, is there a limit to the o.s anything? does it work with everysingle mac. It seemed to work on my g5, well it didnt work but when i typed in the Systemstarter thing that worked vers it didnt on the mini. I was thinking about putting the minis HDD into the g5 since there both SATA because i thought it was the Intel processor screwing the thing up

Does anybody at all know any other solution, or any other single user mode directions, because the sites that a few people gave me didnt work, and i know its the instructions because i tried it on my mini and my g5
