You make some good points... but the problem is that they are simply not true. The main flaw in your logic is that I'm not paying for a data plan. I'm paying ten dollars a month for 500 text messages, and unlimited mobile web (the browser I'm using now). Sure, I could get a data plan, but since this phone does not need one, I don't have to.

And this is one of those statements that annoys me. People who gripe about the cost of the iPhone because it costs more than their phone. Now, while this LG VX-9900 looks like it has a few nice features, man that is one U-G-L-Y contraption. And how big is that screen? And if you aren't using a data plan, then there's no reason to compare. I wouldn't buy a blackberry if I had no need to check email. While your comparison isn't SO bad...it's the people who are still comparing the iPhone to something like a regular clamshell phone.

WHY do people compare it to the RAZR?!? I've never actually used a RAZR, but is it not just a completely different product? One has a 3.5" 320x480 touchscreen with multi-touch, a full (touch) keyboard, 8 gigs of storage, a 2MP camera, and a full-blown web browser, and wifi...the other has a 176x220 screen, the standard 12-key keypad, unknown storage to me, a 0.3 MP camera, basic web, and no wifi. But there are still people raving about how the RAZR costs less. Oh, but is has MMS...oooohh, ahhhh.

I for one, don't understand why some people pay so much for a steak when a watermelon costs so much less.

Forgive me if any of my statements are incorrect. I actually do not view my cell phone as an extension of my anatomy. Thus I don't really get all of the MMS, 2-billion text plans, and all that gak.

I agree with you on that, they are two completely different products. I'm not comparing my phone with the iPhone... I'm simply justifying why I find it to be a better deal to save the four and five hundred dollars and get a very capable phone. You must be missing what I am saying... you say there is no comparision if I am not using a data plan. I'm trying to get across that I don't NEED a data plan. I can check my email, go on google, and check macrumors all I want... for free without a data plan.

One last thing to clear up: You say you don't understand why people pay for a steak when a watermelon costs so much less... but that statement pretty much completely contradicts your post. You say why buy a steak (iPhone = steak) when a watermelon (other phones = watermelon) costs so much less. I couldn't agree more!

I cant Imagine using any other Cellphone than the Iphone. Or maybe till a newer cooler version of it comes out.
I went to the beach and didnt want to bring my Iphone and leave it inside a steaming hot car or risking getting sand and stuff on it near the water so I swapped the sim card to my old Motorola.
It was only a day and I missed using my Iphone :D
Well worth the money spent IMO.

Obviously you're not that happy cause you're sitting here reading threads about the Iphone trying to justify to yourself why you dont have one yet :D
Dont hide it, you know you want one....

you forgot to mention the cost of the iPhone on top of the plan that comes with it. So yes, I am happy to be saving money.

Meh... I am very happy I just find it interesting that people are actually surprised that a 5 and 600 dollar mobile phone is actually nice.

The RAZR was $500 when it first came out. Some people even paid the full, non-subsidized price. Aside from the slim form factor, it's a crappy phone!

So no, just because a phone costs a lot of money doesn't mean it's actually nice.

I've been using the iPhone for a month now, and there's no way I'm ever going back to my SLVR, or any ordinary cell phone. It's well worth the extra $20/month AND the $650 I paid (damn taxes ). The convenience of having the Internet at your fingertips is simply amazing!

It's called sarcasm.

Anyway... actually the cost of the iPhone was added on.

Let's say you had a data plan for your EnV, just for the sake of argument. $79 a month for 24 months = $1896. Plus the $99 for the EnV. Your total is $1995.

The iPhone plan is $59 a month for 24 months. This equals $1416. Plus $599 for the iPhone, and it comes to $2015, which is $20 more TOTAL for the iPhone.

The point basically is if you were paying for a data plan, isn't the iPhone worth $20 more?

Yes you are correct. But I am not paying for the data plan... and at the same time I am getting the the benefits of having a data plan. So you are correct in saying that if I was paying for a data plan, it would be a much better deal to get an iPhone.

Well... you are basing the RAZR being a crappy phone on what you views are on it today. When it came out... it was pretty cool. I'm not saying everything expensive is automatically nice. I am saying that the iPhone is expensive... and it is nice.

No, when the RAZR came out, I thought it looked better than most other phones, but I've always felt that Motorola programmers couldn't come up with a decent GUI if theirs lives depended on it. And don't get me started on their sorry-ass excuse for an address book program. So yes, I felt the RAZR was a crappy phone from Day 1, along with every other phone I've had to use over the years.

The iPhone is the first phone I've used where I didn't automatically think "What a crappy interface!" It's not perfect, but it's in an entirely different league than every other cell phone out there (as far as the GUI is concerned).

I agree.
I dont know what was that great about the Razor, personally I thought it was ugly looking.
It was the cool thing/phone to have back then but what did you really get for the $500? Just a basic cell that was really thin/slim.
Nothing near the features the Iphone has.

Well, I agree that the RAZR was extremely overpriced when it came out. But then again, we are talking about the iPhone. All I am trying to say is that it is an amazing piece of hardware, with a hefty price tag to go along with it. Nobody NEEDS an iPhone, and if people are happy with it and the price, god bless america. I am just saying that I am happy with something that is much cheaper, and more than enough for me :)

There are plenty of phones that have carried and continue to carry $500+ pricetags. If getting something like the iPhone was as simple as paying over $500, all of the owners here would have already done that.

The iPhone is a "surprise" because there isn't anything like it at any pricepoint.

I am stuck using a Blackjack for now -- on paper, the capabilities are supposed to be similar to the iPhone's, but it's a whole different story in practice. In fact, after using this phone and others for the past few days, I'm starting to see $600 as a bargain...

There is one, and only one reason people bash the cost of the iPhone: they are trying to justify not getting one themselves.

I mean really. What is the point of beating me over the head with the iPhone's cost? Yeah, it costs $600, so what? I found the cost justifiable. If you don't, hey, good for you! You enjoy your free RAZR, and I'll enjoy my iPhone, thank you very much.

The whole cruz of what makes capitalism great is that people can work as hard as they are motivated to, and spend only the money they care to part with, to bring them the satisfaction they desire. For some people, it's tens of thousands of dollars on a gas guzzling SUV. Or, they could go hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt (that they may or may not be able to repay) on an extravagant overpriced McMansion in an overcrowded, overdeveloped part of the country, that will waste energy and take up more space than that person could possibly occupy.

Me? Happiness cost $600... a small bit of decadence compared to others I've seen. And although it's not guiltless (I'm sure some poor worker in China had to work overtime for almost no pay to put out millions of these things), at least it doesn't rape the land or pollute the skies... much.

Bottom line: it's a phone. If I choose to buy it, that's my right. If you choose not to, that's YOUR right. Get over it!

Anyway, back to the subject at hand: I haven't really been able to use a "regular" phone since the Treo 650. So, I'm addicted to a feature-rich smart device of SOME kind. The iPhone just takes the cake, interface-wise.

Have I mentioned this is the best phone/mobile communication device I have ever tried today?

Well it is.

I just can't get over how great this device is.

This thing is in a class by itself. (please stop comparing this to a razor...)

At this point - I couldn't imagine life without it period. I can't even call it a phone anymore. It's a micro-mini laptop that has phone 'capabilities'.

How about the Beautiful screen....

everyone that sees my iphone is amazed by how vivid and clear the screen is. That's well worth it for me.

I smell some jealousy brewing here, and the inability to purchase an iPhone for whatever reason. Leave those who love their iphones. I for one feel it better than the sizzle AND the steak. I will have the watermelon for dessert.

I love mine also, but I let someone try it today and they were the FIRST to be turned off. An intern and I warned the woman that it takes about 2 weeks to get used to the virtual keyboard. immediately she wanted to start typing on the keyboard, then criticized it for not correcting her name. 1) It's a name. 2) We TOLD her it takes a while to get used to the keyboard!! Duh!! Most who do not like it seem to be like her. They expect too much and complain about dumb s**t.

I converted TWO co-workers who actually went out and bought it because of me. Proud Apple soldier? Why, yes I am!! :p

I remember. The Razr was $700 unlocked. It came in a really nice case unless purchased from Cingular. It was sooo top secret and sold out that when called a store that had it, the rep refused to confirm that it was in stock! I had to go in person, and sure enough, they had one. I bought it for $500. I had the coolest LOOKING phone at the time as you can recall. But functionality-wise, it was a step back from my prior smart phone.

Likewise, the iPhone is a step back from my 3G pocket PC phone...BUT in many ways, unlike the initial Razr, it's LEAPS ahead. I love it.

Is ENV short for envy.
Sorry.

The iPhone is alot but for the things that it does and the form factor, it just can't be beat. Try it you'll like it.

Huh??? I started this post... i love my iphone... i meant i feel sorry for him because he has an envy...

wow i've been away for about four days, im surprised this post is still going strong.

I paid full fare on my Razr around 500...I would have paid twice that for my iPhone

Same here. I did and I would have.

Loved the Razr's size and feel (still do) but the phone itself was not-so-good.
...in addition, I needed a PDA (another $500).
Both together didn't provide the functionality of the iPhone.

iPhone was a bargain, all considered. Extraordinary.

i never had a problem with my sony ericsson w810, but i cant imagine going back. I've been looking into smartphones forever, but none did everything i wanted so this was a blessing to say the least
