I don't think FUD means what you think it means. While the post you refer to may or may not have been misinformed, it clearly doesn't fall under the category of FUD, which implies intention behind the misinformation.

Split hairs much?

I brought up the task manager and watched CPU usage while playing BC2 just now. Game was hitting all four physical cores, about 25-30% CPU total (i7-2600K). It's a well known fact that BC2 can have problems on dual core processors because of the relatively heavy load imposed by the great sound.

I'm having trouble finding where I said the i5-2600K was a bad choice; I'm sure it's great. But if you are building an awesome rig already, it's really not that much more to go for an i7 if you have the $$.

Hey I'm chimed in because BC2 is not a cpu intensive game. It's much more about the gpu. That's what the benchmarks say.

Also nothing wrong i7 2600k. It's just that for gaming you aren't going to notice the extra power. Money would be better spent on a faster gpu.

This notion it is future proofed because of HT is ...marketing FUD.

The 2500k is faster than nearly every cpu out there except 1 or 2 and that is at stock speeds.

Yes you can still overclock it a good 1ghz. SAve $100 buy the 2500k and sleep at night just fine.

I'd like you to try to tell some of the members of my clan that BC2 isn't processor intensive. They will laugh in your face.

I still think you aren't getting that FUD doesn't really apply here; this is NOT marketing. It is gamers helping another gamer out. No one told the OP or you that one is somehow screwed for making one choice over the other.

To be brutally honest I'm getting the vibes that you are jealous because you weren't able to get a 2600K for any number of reasons. There's really nothing wrong with us choosing the processor we want and you choosing the one you want. In the end, both are a not insignificant part of the cost of the built.

I have the chance to get the i7 for only $54 more than the i5 but am still going the get the i5.

In tests the i7 only gets a few more FPS than the i5, nothing like the difference between the i3 and the i5.

I don't think splitting hairs means what you think it means. If it was normal to use "FUD" either way and I was calling you out on a technicality, then perhaps I'd be splitting hairs, but when one calls attention to the usual connotation of an expression, one is not splitting hairs.

The key word in the definition you posted is the same one I used when responding to you: intention. FUD implies intention. Thank you for confirming this.

exactly. only get the i7 if you used hyperthreading, which games dont

Here it is!!!

Well I finally got everything and built the computer. It went together beautifully. No issues at all. I've played a lot of Starcraft 2 this weekend and the computer runs like a dream. In standard games, I'm running around 150-200 fps. This is with everything on as high as it can be. In really intensive custom games, I'll see between 50-200 fps. That obviously depends on the game. Here is what I have, for anyone interested in building an awesome computer that is a decent price.

28" Hanss-G HG281D
Creative Gigaworks T-40 Series II speakers. (sounds incredible)
Logitech Illuminated Keyboard
Logitech G500 mouse
Thermaltake Element G case (fantastic case. came with an 850 W modular power supply)
Intel i7-2600K
Asus P67 Sabertooth Motherboard
8GB G-Skill Ripjaw X RAM
EVGA GTX 570 HD video card
750 GB Seagate HD (I want to upgrade to a solid state but that will be later)
Antec KUHLER Shelf 120 mm PWM fan High-performance CPU Cooler

This thing runs so freaking cool when under load too. It's crazy. The CPU temps barely move.
Without the monitor, the price was about $1,700 USD. Not bad at all for this. I'm extremely happy with it.

What CPU did you get?

The key word was usually. Sorry you didn't see it in bold.

Sorry the 2600k is virtually no faster in games according to benchmarks so why waste $100 over a 2500k? The $100 is better used for more gpu power instead.

GAmers helping gamers.

I got the Intel i7-2600K.

I couldn't really spend $100 more on a video card. The next step up is the GTX 580 and that is way too expensive. I have no regrets on the 2600K and that's all that matters.

for that price why not just buy the 15" MBP. with the educational discount it's $1999. i priced out a dell xps 15 and even with the 2GB nvidia card it's still slower than the MBP.

lol, the PC would still eat the MBP in terms of performance.

Nice PC! Looks real clean.

I still need a PC for work related stuff so as much as I love Apple, I will always have one.
I want to build a new PC but I am waiting on Thunderbolt to be implemented on the new boards before I do.
Hopefully by the end of this year.

Looking good!!! Only suggestion is to clean up the wiring coming out of the PSU a bit; it will help airflow in the case.

I really hope this guy was kidding...

Anyways, to OP: Nice build man! I'm not even gonna lie, I'm super jealous haha. I sold my gaming rig in order to purchase a 15" MBP, but not a day goes by that I don't miss the power of a desktop. But, priorities have changed and the MBP suits my everyday needs much more.

It's amazing to me how some Apple fanboys will really try to argue that Mac's performance to price ratio is on par with PC's. (Especially self-built desktops, like the OP's). It's nowhere close...sorry but that's just a fact. I'm not talking about build quality, material quality, etc. etc. I'm talking about brute computing power. No way can a pre-built Mac match with a desktop that I can build. The premium you're paying when you buy a Mac is seen in the build quality of the machine and the overall experience you'll have. I'm more and more impressed with my MBP every day, but I know it's limitations (GPU!).

Anyways, great job OP. I know you're gonna enjoy that rig for a long time

They said it above. The PC would run circles around the MacBook. But your point is why I've labeled the thread "ashamed." I love Macs but I had to go to PC for the game performance. Macs just can't match it. If Macs could, I would have purchased a new Mac.

The picture makes that PSU wiring look bad. But it's right against the back plate of the case. It's even got ties to hold PSU wires back. The airflow is as best as I can get it. The jumble of wires by the PSU doesn't get airflow. The metal plate that separates the PSU from the rest of the case is closed off too keep the PSU heat away from the board. I'm thinking of putting something over that so the PSU isn't even seen when the door is off.

You don't need 8gbs of ram. I have 4gbs and as a demonstration at my school I ran adobe photo shop and illustrator on one monitor while running at max CoD Black ops on the other. With no freezing or bluescreens of death.

Hahahah. You dont get freezes or BSODs when you run out of ram. And none of those programs are really ram intensive. Black ops its locked at about 1gb of ram usage. My 8GB of ram has helped in quite a few games.
